    For the people on parole, house arrest, or on bail.

    Instead of one of those leg locators, that just reports location, you can also tell if the bad guy is planning to rub out the witness.

    If a person is on probation, they lose their privacy rights in exchange for the early release which eliminates the privacy problems.

    If it does make a difference, you lose. On regulating speech, to get around the prohobitions, one of the test is, if the restriction is content neutral.

    That's why I said to check issues on individual liability.

    Many times, if a company goes under, the people in charge grab money for themselves -- so if you can piece the corporate veil, it's yours. Many companies have insurance that covers bad acts by management, if you can get that, you avoid issues of bankruptcy.

    SLAPP is Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation. It's a lawsuit not designed to win, but to just shut someone/some-group up. An example is fighting a zoning change for a waste processing plant, and the company files a lawsuit for intentional interference and slander. Another one is is Mattel's libel case against me.

    Actually, if there are terms with the UGO that prohibits posting, it may not be valid.

    Many states have an anti-SLAPP statute.

    Sit and talk with a lawyer. But, some thoughts to keep in mind:
    • See if the individuals who run it can be held liable
    • R.I.C.O (civil) - This could be considered a conspiracy to defraud.
    • Unfair and deceptive business practices. This in some states can get attorney fees and multiple damages.

    How credible would technical advice be comming from bigstud@aol.com? Even the email address of techsupXX@aol.com does not provide an air of confidence.

    As a rule, the company's own employees should use their products. But, what happens when the product undermines the confidence of a of the customers. Think of passing out at the circus and the doctor at Ringling Brothers is wearing a clown outfit.

    You have a misunderstanding here. They published a copywritten work, the law. They do not lose a copyright when publishing...it prevents you from republishing w/o permission.

    I would equate this more to a standards comittee, similar to what RAMBUS got smacked for.

    For the record, I find the court ruling that a law is copyrightable is nonsense.

    This is not suprising given that it is Iran.

    But, there is similar to things in the USA. In Santa Monica, CA one must get a permit from the city to vend on the prominade. You can't get one, unless you are renting a cart from a specific group. One must wonder if there are payoffs being made to the right officials. This might be the same for Iran.

    It has already happened. It's a counterclaim. Generally, if you are sued, you are required to bring any claim you have against the party that has filed suit as a counterclaim. If you fail to, you may be barred from bring suit later.

    I had a professor ask if I was helping someone in the class or writing their code.

    The professor saw that her programming style was similar to mine. We were not cheating, but it shows that programming style can be picked up and recognized.

    When it comes to writing code or prose, style can be similar because they are learning together.

    A simple diff won't be able to pick this up, or counting the number of common words. But, it can be a flag for a human human to check further.

    By hiding data in noise, you can use this to track the source of a copy.

    You have an image; you hide a signature in the image; you find a copy; BANG! Proof of a copy and proof of the source.

    Almost like people with a domain that a different email address on each list to track SPAM. It might be able to be done free with an image editor. Of course, if the image is scaled or coverted to another format, it may be lost.

    Most of you have heard about the horror stories of DSL. Usually you have to deal with three companies to solve a problem, and they all point at each other as the cause of the problem.

    But, dealing with AT&T and Road Runner is also a pain in the posterior. Not only do they require the MAC address of each NIC, but when you mention Linux, their response is "We don't support Linux." Of course, I responded, "Did I ask for a linux command?". I set up a Win2K machine, their first response was, "remove TCP/IP and reinstall." When I asked what that would do, they didn't know, but said they were sure it would fix the problem. I asked if they would bet $1,000, but they would not put their money where their mouth is.

    The question may not be the technology, but the compentcy of their support people.

    It could be that the agents know what the rules are and are complying with the rules.

    I am not arguing that their compliance is valid. They could be telling lies to comply.
