but what is the latency on something like that? I could fill a jet with thousands of DVDs and crush that record, but my latency would suck.
Also, I know the article doesn't suggest this but I have seen news about surgeries performed over the internet. How can a Doctor perform surgery over a network with high latency?
Isn't RedHat trying to woo big corporate/enterprise accounts? From what I know of the corp/enterprise attitude (admittedly not a lot), they don't wnat to have to upgrade the whole OS on a yearly basis in order to stay up to date. [...] How is RedHat not shooting itself in the foot on this one?
Buy Advanced Server and you are supported for 3 years. It should be plenty affordable for "big corporate/enterprise accounts" and because you have to pay for it, more credible in some corporate minds.
... I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid. You're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you, a world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries, a world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you.
In the end Red Hat will be responsible for uniting the Linux Desktop and everyone will praise this move. KNOME (or maybe GDE) will be on the desktop of every man, woman, child and dog (cats don't really give a sh*t).
But ultimately, Hurd concluded, Opera and other Microsoft competitors would do better to support the technologies that the market-leading Internet Explorer browser made available, rather than focusing on industry standards.
"What these other browser makers should do is stop complaining about what Microsoft is doing and start supporting what Microsoft is supporting," Hurd said. "People out there aren't reading these specs; they're using IE."
This would be a huge mistake for any competitor. Why would you want to jump into line with MS? You would have no opportunity lead. You would just play catch up and never be able to offer the customer a superior product.
Follow the standards and anyone can lead the market if they implement them better. They will also avoid being blindsided by new MS "standards".
How naive. Little did they know that this would lead to total global chaos...Coke machines killing kids, toasters strangling people, and people using rusty bicycles as currency. You know...dogs and cats living together...the destruction of civilization as we know it.
Oh wait, that didn't happen...I gotta go find that money I buried.
I have to "click through" an install of Sun's Java jre and jdk when I install it with no GUI.
You may have a point when installing software but it is my understanding that most if not all software in commercial distributions lie under a GPL license. You should be able to agree to GPL once to cover all the GPL software about to be installed.
I agree with that, but what does 'noncommercial speech' mean? Do you think the propaganda they host is noncommercial? It's something that caught my eye.
Who defines the usage of dotORG? Why aren't they enforcing it? Will it get enforced with new management?
"Dot-org is important now because it the one space on the Internet that... has been devoted to noncommercial speech," said Barry Steinhardt, the director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Technology and Liberty Program. "If it were to be turned into just another dot-com, that would be a blow to speech." (emphasis mine)
[cheapshot] mpaa.org? riaa.org?
What is 'noncommercial' about that? I guest we can chalk up another 'blow to speech' by the corporations that RUN mpaa and riaa. [/cheapshot]
I guess this means we'll start seeing more exploits for Firefox (or attempted exploits; ie, bugs).

It thought the article said the CEO came in AFTER the decision to start using the software. Wait, let me go check...
SimDesk faces long road
[...] Lou Waters, former CEO of waste giant Browning-Ferris Industries, recently replaced Knowling as SimDesk's CEO. [...]"
Yeah, that's what it says. Wow, I read the article twice in the same time it took you to NOT read it once.
"slower SCSI bus" is just plain wrong.
"Am I missing something?" How about adding more than two drives to a channel?
At what point did anyone NOT see this coming?
The case isn't against Sklyarov. It's against ElcomSoft.

The GNU shall set you free!
But how does "Red Hat" fit in?
4) ...
5) Profit!
Anyone find the story elsewhere?
"In perhaps slightly related news, Cnet reports sightings of one of Microsoft's all-new draconian EULAs in the Xbox Live beta kit."
It has an effect on spelling, but I think it affects grammar more often.
When is the last time you downloaded a Red Hat Advanced Server ISO?

The greatest mistake we could make as a species would be to short-circuit this cycle for the sake of our own greedy, short-sighted interests.
What do you think we are doing now? Were we really meant to transplant hearts, kidneys, etc? Were we really supposed to use radiation to kill cancer?
Ishmael explained it best when he suggested the "Takers" don't want to be at the mercy of the Gods.

Dude, I have a bong that looks just like this!
The DMCA just made this world a safer place.
Don't ask, don't tell.

This is obviously A.L.I.C.E. answering.
