I think its great that you do not preach to those who do not wish to hear. The point I disagree with is your views on religion in politics and schools. Politics and schools are public forums with people from every walks of life. In such public forums, you will have people of different reglious convictions who will be offended by a bias towards any 'one' religion. In this case, christian's hold the majority of the population, but there are still those who are muslim, hindu, buddhist, pagan, atheist agnostic and etc... It is their RIGHT to be able to avoid having to attend and/or participate in religious ceremonies they do not believe in or practice. There are exceptions of course, for instance, student sponsor'd prayer groups at school. Since no-one is required to attend, its perfectly legitmate and allows those students who organized and attended to exercise their rights as (insert religion here)
Having a drivers license is not a crime. Killing someone while in a drunken stupor is. For a crime to be committed, there has to be a damaged party. I'm sorry you feel that I'm an unethical person, I consider myself to be an extremely moral person. But how does standing up for my rights make me an unethical person? I fail to see the logic.
If someone calls you a socialist after repeating what you said, you can safely assume that they have mental retardation and/or chose not to/didn't hear what you said.
I do agree with you, governement should not control the economy.
Yours and a few other posts here today make me feel much better. I thought I was the only one who knew this! I'm about to cancel my social security number, cancel my drivers license and put my car in a pure trust. (that way if I wreck it, someone sues me, the maximum liability is the car, the 'wrecked' car:)
The truth about the car is that when you purchase a car, your buying a car for the government and by having a drivers license, they are giving you permission to drive their car. Its Sick.
Here is a link which has helped me learn the truth and might help others. This guy, Brent Johnson, is considered the foremost expert on common law and is a soverign citizen. Unfortunatley, the website is not very informative, but his seminars are. If anyone of you has a seminar in your area, Go to it! Fork over the cash, you will be disgusted and scared at what has been done to you. The link is Here. Thanks
So then if my pursuit of happiness is to have sex with children younger than 6, then should a government be allowed to screw with people's pursuit of happiness? Should I be locked up for violating someone else's belongings?
Absolutely not. Its none of their business, and personally, its none of mine either. If you try to have sex with my six year old child on the other hand, I will shoot your ass.
Or, for the second case where the child agrees, and lets even say her parents and guardian(s), where's the harm?
Who are you or I to decide what harm was done? Point is, its NONE OF MY BUSINESS! And its NONE of the governements business nor yours either! What makes me or you so special so that we can dictate OUR morals to others?
The people who 'own' this have allowed me access, just like WB selling the Matrix on DVD allow you access to watch the movie. WB never said you had to use Windows or a Mac.
Your right they didn't. If they are now willing to spend so much money on lawsuits against those hosting DeCSS, don't you think it would be much more economical to have spent the money to come up with a better encryption? If it really meant that much to them, they would have.
Where is a story where a Linux player was sought after legally and refused? Come on, you work within he damn system.
How do you know what system I work within? For all you know I might be the Royal Soveriegn of some alien planet or something! Is a Legal Linux player made by open-source/free software advocates really likely? C'mon. You KNOW that the MPAA is NOT going to give its keys away to OUR rebel band!
So since the music can't be stopped from being pirated across the net, and movies can't either, whether DVD/VHS or theator rips, the corperations shouldn't use scare tactics.
Course not. If they REALLY wanted to protect themselves, they should use better means. Harrasment and BULLYING by Gestapo is, in my opinion, a ursurption of Liberty.
But serial numbers don't work either. The point is to try to keep the majority of people to follow the law.
So now it doesn't seem to matter too much if the law is correct or not. I think that is the WHOLE POINT! Say theres a law against eating Ice Cream. It makes people fat they say. Are you going to not eat Ice Cream simply because of the law? Say you LOVE Ice Cream. What if it was Marijuana instead?
I'd be happy if they'd follow their morals, and I don't find illegal copies of music, software, or movies very moral. I perfectly fine for playing DVD movies, legally.
I don't find them very immoral at all. Who are you stealing from? THOSE WHO HAVE STOLEN FROM YOU! Forget 'turn the other cheek' this is Real Life People. Just like Hurd would be an awesome kernel if the entire world was a programmer, 'Turn the other Cheek' would be an awesome way of life if everyone was a Son of God.
You assume that that fact has already been determined. You miss the point entirely. It isn't about whether or not he broke the law, but whether or not a corporation should have the power to screw with people's pursuit of happyness like this.
Your right and this has been going on for a long time. People simply have a hard time accepting to fact that someone might be out there wanting to screw them in the ass. People are so concerned with their own safety, they never think about who they might be inconvienicing, trying to stay safe. This entire battle between the hackers(IE: programmers providing a solution for a problem) and the MPAA is an offshoot of this. Those at the MPAA wish to maintain their financial security and they don't even bother to notice who their inconvieniencing in the process. (Some more than others in the case of Mr. Johansen) I bought a DVD player just before all this started and now I don't want to buy DVD's to use it!
This entire issue also brings into light the control of the corporate world over the government, and not just the US government it seems. If I remember correctly, from the US Constitution, Rights are based on priority, those who have a higher priority take precedence. That order would be
God (I'm not so sure about this one, I don't believe in a god because I have not seen or heard anything that could prove its existence. He's certainly been waiving his right to free speech)
The Citizen. (On the known scale, the most important entity).
The government
Corporations.
They're at the bottom of the scale!! How is it that a 'person(s)' in control of a corporate entity can use its weight for their own vendettas?
Anyway, thats just my take on the issue, it doesn't make any sense to me. To me, something like that doesn't only seem illegal, its immoral. What happened? I thought we had to right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happyness? If I can't watch a DVD I purchased on my computer because of an immoral corporate entity, my right to Pursuit of Happyness has been repressed! Its no-one elses duty to make sure I'm happy, so you can't force them to 'make' a DVD player for Linux for example, but they should NOT be able to stop you.
My apologies for the bad spelling, I may be incorrect about the rights precedence thing, but it seems like a good idea if I'm wrong.
Generally, Required public school uniforms would not be worth the effort and money it would take to distribute/enforce them. Also, every great mind in history has in one form or another, thought differently than everyone else. Why do we want our kids to think alike, much less look alike?
Whoa, you got jipped with the first one. The unopened ones at the store I went to were $149. I haven't had a chance to play it (someone else is watching something right now).
I had to go to another store 15 minutes away to get mine because the closest store was out of stock. The first store wouldn't sell me the floor model. Glad to hear you got your moneys worth tho.
That patent deserves to be thrown out the door. First, its a dirty hack, stopgap solution to short-sighted programmers and managment.
If he can patent that, I should patent using an unsigned long to count seconds from 1970! It amazes me yet I sort of expect this sort of behavior from the human race. At most times, I feel ashamed to be part of this race. Others, I feel very proud. I hope the patent office's actions make me feel the latter.
Your probably right. Without windows, a computer wouldn't be in as many homes as it is now. But everything has a lifetime, and IMO, its time is up.
1) Knock off Torvalds so he doesn't create you ignorant, stupid bastards. (Without Windows, you wouldn't be here you ingrateful fucker. You're probably in Windows right now.)
Why would you want to do that? Its not his fault, he just wanted to do something and did. He felt that it would be nice if everyone could see what he did and his project was lucky enough to take off. He didn't create us! We came to him!
4) Take Windows 2000 and present it to Microsoft ni 1985.
Even if microsoft had the source code to w2k, they wouldn't be able to even understand it much less use it. There's no way that w2k would run on the hardware back then. They would have no compiler, and even if they did, they would have no platform to run the compilers on. On the other hand, Linux source code still runs on the original hardware it was developed on. Linus might have a bit of a time understanding whats going on, but he's a good programmer, he'd get to it.
That brings us to the ethical part of it. Time should *never* EVER be changed even if we have the capabilities of doing so.
Go back to an original Star Trek series, 'The City on the edge of Forever.' Kirk and Spock go back in time through the Guardian to find McCoy, who is drugged and crazy. In the process, Kirk learns that McCoy would have saved the life of one Edith Keedler(spelling). Edith, a very outspoken young woman (cheeze to the end) leads a pacificm movement after not being hit and killed by a truck when McCoy would have saved her. The movement delayed US entry into WWII, German's finished their heavy water expirements first and BOOM, annihilation. Paradox. I don't know about any of you, but I'm do not want to find out what happens if time/space is violated in such a manner, if at all possible.
I have to agree with you. The term 'Geek' and 'Nerd' are both derogatory. IMO, it only seems to apply to those still in highschool. Speaking of hs, I was the most technically proficient person in school. I was bounds ahead of everyone else, not only did I code C and C++, but ran linux, everyone else, even the smartest had trouble running the macintoshes. The only reason why I was not valedictorian is because I didn't like school and thought it was mostly BS. I was also one of the more popular people in the school, my best friends where those who would be considered 'Jocks'. They didn't dare push me around, they didn't even think of it, They were my friends! Nerds and Geeks are those people who get picked on.
Ok, geeks: Personally, this doesn't sound any better than Nerd. I see someone who is a geek as someone who is a klutz, but may be intelligent. Somewhat akin to a gimp.
Might I suggest a few more appropriate terms for self-reference?
Techie: That ones not that bad at all. It has simple, to-the-point meaning. A person who deals in technology. This one applies to most of the people I know who are technically proficient, but it is rather broad, technology could mean anything
Coder: a person who codes.
Hacker: a person who solves problems dealing with technology. Alternatively known as a person who exploits vulnerabilities of remote systems in order to gain control of them.
Computer User: My absolute favorite. I am a computer user. This one encompasses everything that I am, techie being a bit too broad.
Don't assume that everyone who reads is in the technology industry has a problem with social life. Most the people I know who are don't.
We will be. I work for Bynari, excellent company to work for;) Tom's a great guy. Unfortunately, the article did not flow well as it was pieced together from several different instances of Tom talking to the reporter and it was probably out of order as well. Since we are a fairly new business (only been around for about 6 months, I've only been with Bynari for 2 weeks), our main goal at the moment is to provide a linux solution for companys who are looking for a way to ease the transition from Windows 9x/NT workstations to a more maintainable solution (ie Linux). Tomorrow, we will be releasing an alpha version of the first of a suite of applications which will make the IT proffesionals life easier. The program is called TradeMail, so don't forget to check it out Here Also don't forget that it is ALPHA;) Alot of the features, including talking to exchange servers for server-side message storing, global address books and calendering aren't finished yet, but it does support multiple POP3/SMTP accounts with optional per-account profiling for things such as identity (your name, email address, reply to address, organization, signature, etc).
Next we will be releasing our server side solution for Linux integration. I won't spoil it for you;) We do have projects planned in the future which will expand the normal-everyday usage of linux to provide a more attractive alternative.
Wrong, Laws != morality, morality is what you 'feel' is the right thing to do. For instance, in my opinion, it is wrong to just slap someone. It is wrong to cut someone off on the road, its wrong to do damage to someone elses machine with malicious intent. There are alot of laws which have moral backgrounds to them, but for the most part, they're just put there to be stupid. For instance, IIRC, it is legal to shoot someone on your property in Texas if you have `no trespassing' signs. Does that sound moral to you? It is Illegal to start a business without a business license. Does that law have a basis in morality? Laws define what the general populace thinks the norm of behaviour should be, and since the general population of the world really doesn't care too much about being a moral person, they simply advocate the laws which they think will suit them best, damned the rest of everyone.
Morality, on the other hand is more evolved. Rules which define morality simply cannot be put in words, except in parts. Morality is that little cricket beside you with the top hat and the medal on his breastcoat. Morality is different for everyone. I prefer An it hurt none, do what thou wilt. I think everyone should follow that.
I seriously seriously hope you are kidding dood. What group would rather hang around? Someone who takes pride in their work, argueing for what they believe in? This, whining you refer to is what makes linux good. Or perhaps you'd rather sit around all day with a bunch of stiffs who every time you turn your back try to pick your pockets?
Back to that whining. Wtf planet are you on? Argument is the best way to resolve a debate and have the best solution implemented instead of a solution which is designed to make more money. Jezz dood, it saddens me that someone can be so stupid.
Come together, en-masse! Let us ban this dangerous chemical Dihydrogen monoxide! Leading component of acid rain, found in all cancerous and precancerous tumors, leading cause of erosion, in its gaseous form causes severe burns. Do you think Dihydrogen monoxide should be banned? Ok, OF COURSE they don't want their customers to run linux. It would dimishing the lining of greenbacks in their pockets. I do this move of theirs is rather stupid, especially if they will be greatly publizing that page. If I was microsoft, I'd be trying to encourage it just enough to make it look like I didn't have a monopoly. Greed is a very very good wool-over-the-eyes and it has blinded them. It blinded them long ago and has been blatently obvious. I say let them do what they want. I say let those poor bastards who will follow, follow them. They will wallow in their stupidity, never, ever realizing it. I just hope that one day their convoluted structre built out of lego's and posicle sticks will be too heavy to support its own weight and collapse. Can't depend upon the government for it, can't depend upon the government for anything. It makes me sad to say that it all boils down to money.
usually it doesn't have anything to do with whats going on around us. Most of the time its off a completely unrelated subject that has nothing to do with our surroundings. If it is external stimuli, I take that into account and really don't think about the possibilty of the thought originating from telepathic ability, I just attribute it to, 'Oh, I saw that the same time they did'
That brings up an interesting point of ESP, Telepathy. I'm not sure if any of you other/.'ers have noticed this, but I seem to think about things just before someone in my immediate vicinity says something about it. This is an extremely common occurance, I notice it maybe 20-30 times and day and I'm sure there are other instances which I do not notice it. The only time I really notice it is when the converstation switches.
The only thing I could sum this up to is telepathy. My theory is this: A human brain operates on a freqency and emits a small amount of waves (radio waves?). Another brain which is tuned into that particular frequency and sensitive enough to the lowered power (by not being the transmitter) can recieve these thoughts. The only hitch-- I can't tell if these thoughts are mine or someone elses, so I don't know if I'm reading someone elses mind when I do this. Call me wacko, mebe I am.
If two processors, which also run off a specific frequency, one of them simply powered up, the other one doing a specific task, would it be possible to register what the other processor is doing in the one which is simply powered on? Just a question
The Social Security number is actually a contract, a contract in which most people have had from birth. The contract basically exchanges some of your constitutional rights for federal privedges such as recieving of medicare, medicaid, social security, welfare, and a few other things. It also incurs upon it weight from the IRS. Born without a SSN? IRS? Whats that?
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure thats whats going on, IIRC.
Since I'm sure alot of you did not know this, and if you did not, then you are eligible to cancel this contract as an act of fraud and void. I'm note entirely up-and-up on the proceedure, I just know that it can in fact be done. Theoretically, cancel your SSN, then you never had a SSN, because the contract is void up to the time of the original signing (your baby footprint?) which was most probably signed by your parents.
I apologize, your right, it is more technically classified as a Trojan Worm. Viruses (sorry, virii, whatever) include file infectors, bootsector infectors, macros viruses, trojan horses and worms. A more relaxed definition of Virus is 'Any program or code block that self replicates and spreads without the consent or knowledge of the user of the infected host.' So yes, as in the Matrix, Humans can be considered a Virus.;)
I know, very very funny, I've warned them about that multiple times. They don't seem to really care (either that or have too much corporate suit smoke in their lungs). Also, you'll notice that the stupid ftp server is an NT machine, lots of ftp clients don't like it because it returns non-standard responses sometimes. Funny thing is that sometimes even IE4/5 doesn't like it;)
Btw, this company is extremely NT oriented and it drives me batty, I think I'm the only one here who knows anything about linux. We do have a virusscanner out there for linux, but, there are no DAT's for it which contain Linux viri (wonder why, none exist. HA!) Anyway, it scans for Win32, WinNT binary viruses and macro viruses, same as the DOS and Win32 scanners do.
