    I'd want to do stupid stuff too. Like put a tether on and fly around with a fire extinguisher rocket. I'd also probably be an idiot and shoot at the moon some. Then all us astronauts would run out and place space ball. I'm sure that'd be a sweet EVA.

    Don't forget to bring a golf club - you could hit even farther than those Apollo dudes. World record! (Solar system record anyway.)

    Fairies require a complete reworking of the fundamental basis of physics, some kind of scientific explanation of magic, and either the location of a large amount of hidden real estate for the Faerie realm, or the postulation of prallel dimensions and a method of traversing between them that doens't require wormholes or gravitational singularities.

    Sounds like Intelligent Design.

    If it is important, it should either not be publicly accessible at all, or at least the directory listing should be denied. An empty index.htm file is not that difficult thing to put into the directory. A .htaccess file does not have that difficult syntax too. In the worst case, just uploading it tomorrow would do the job too.

      Incompetence has its costs.

    But the same applies to the ../ "attack" discussed above. It only works is somebody has incompetently configured the webserver to serve files from outside the web directory.

    How did you get an "up" arrow?

    Konqueror has an "up" arrow that just chops off the last level of the URL.

    Suppose I click on that and get a directory listing and see a filename
    pressrelease.tomorrowsdate.html

    Obviously I am not intended to see that. Legal & ethical dilemma.

    A surprise victory by a populist candidate promising to eliminate corruption in the ruling classes and redistribute oil wealth to the poor.

    This could never happen in properly run capitalist democracies.

    Despite the religious establishment's attempts to manipulate the elections, he has emerged with a strong mandate for economic reform (maybe not your idea of reform), 60% of a 60% voter turnout.

    It will be interesting to see if he is able to use this mandate to push through his economic reform platform, which seems orthogonal to the religious/social reform issues.

    This might explain why my dusty old site keeps getting such high rankings. It's linked to by some other dusty old sites which would also be ranked high because of their antiquity.

    The dress codes for (respectable) women in the US 100 years ago were similar to conservative Islamic countries today. What does it say about a society when it moves to more (or less) restrictive dress codes?

    Who is driving the trend to strict codes of dress and behavior? Do customers really want to be served by people who dress and act in ways obviously dictated by employers?

    I've noticed a trend for store clerks, etc. to call me "Sir". Are they trained to do that or is it just because I'm getting older? Either way, I don't appreciate it.

    Sometimes you don't even need to build special adapters.

    For example, the 25VAC wall wart for my modem had the same connector as the 9VDC for my scanner.

    When I emailed USR about where to buy a new wall wart they just sent me one free.

    I felt a bit sleazy about returning the scanner on warranty, but they really should have some over-voltage protection built into these things.

    I think corporations should be entitled to the same rights and privileges as private citizens.
    Suppose a company has modified GPL software for its internal use and then is taken over by another company and ceases to exist as a corporate entity. Can the acquiring company continue to use the software without publishing source?

    My point is that Corporations can do things like merging and splitting so the rules should not necessarily be the same for them.

    Actually, "industry" is only concerned with maintaining civilization and the environment to the BARE MINIMUM necessary to keep the masses consuming product. Industry can destroy and destroy, up to the point just before people can no longer consume.

    I'd say at least in the USA, we have a long way to go before we hit the bottom.


    As long as you have access to other countrie's resources.
