Oh, that's right. Anyone who is referred to on Slashdot by their initials is probably a god around here. Excuse me if I don't bow down and worship the man who wrote XEmacs and Netscape. He may be a great coder and an all-around-good-guy, but that doesn't make his review of video on linux suck any less.
So if I write a huge flame about the state of something in Linux, can I get it posted to Slashdot too? So let's see, he tried mplayer, hates the skinnable interface, tries gstreamer (under heavy development) and is pissed because it requires gnome2? Then he goes off on a rant about apt for RPM which he thinks will install 2 different packaging systems on his machine?
Give me a break, I've seen better "articles" posted in most message boards. Video playback works just fine on most new distributions (read NOT Red Hat 7.2). This has to be one of the worst articles ever posted to slashdot. We'll probably see it again next week.
Please, I'm sure you think it's funny to spew out garbage about the moon landing being a hoax, but some of us take science a little more seriously.
Just in case you're serious about the moon landings being fake,
here's some real scientific information about why they can't be fake.
IMHO this is meant to be humorous as is most everything by PDQ Bach, although I suppose it is possible that popping balloons can cause damage, I somehow doubt it.
`(f) REVERSE ENGINEERING- (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (a)(1)(A), a person who has lawfully obtained the right to use a copy of a computer program may circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a particular portion of that program for the sole purpose of identifying and analyzing those elements of the program that are necessary to achieve interoperability of an independently created computer program with other programs, and that have not previously been readily available to the person engaging in the circumvention, to the extent any such acts of identification and analysis do not constitute infringement under this title.
This pretty much says that if a person buys a protected work (ie, eBook) they have the right to reverse engineer the protection for the purpose of interoperability. Seems to me that translating from eBook to PDF is "...interoperability of an independently created computer program..."
Did you READ the article?
If so, how do you rationalize that these things will "get in your way"? I don't see how changing "Login" to "Username" and making the text box active and focused is going to slow you down. Likewise, changing some of the icons is likely to be a big deal with a power user such as yourself.
Of course, it's a great idea to imply that people who don't understand "Terminal Emulator" are mentally retarded. The average person has no knowledge of the historical significance of "terminal", but I'm sure it would KILL your productiveness for that tooltip to be changed to "Command Prompt" or something similar.
And to have a consolidated conrol/configuration system? Boy, I know that would sure ruin my day! I would hate to change something once when I can do it 3 times!
So many of us are no better than the stick-in-the-mud politicians and bueracrats we claim to despise. Quit worrying so much about being a 1337 h4X0r and stop to think what this will actually MEAN.
Unless this thing was a whole lot smaller, and had some kind of built-in file transfer (not having to plug it into your windoze box to move mp3s), I wouldn't even bother with it. I've build a player out of an old P133 (a lesser machine could probably handle it) using the software at
http://www.mp3sb.org
It's capable of remote control, LCD display,
and 'net control. Plus if you need to add more files, just open up an FTP session.

I'm going to have to agree with this. Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder, KDE to me look like a "I-wanna-be-M$" desktop. I really don't know much about the development, but K just looks like it's trying to match Windoze feature-for-feature. I just find the interface to be much clumsier than that of GNOME. Having started using K, and then switching to GNOME, I can't understand why anyone is using KDE. People talk about GNOME being slow and/or unstable, but I have never had any problems with it. Especially with the Helix-Code releases, GNOME seems to be making progress faster than KDE. Not to mention the licensing issues that everyone loves to bitch about all day. To me, GNOME is just a better way to get around the GUI.
Maybe we could all send a few hundred 'cease and desist' letters to the MPAA, telling them to pull their head out of their a$$ and stop persecuting innocent kids without any money.
Maybe I'm missing something here....but all I see in the directory is FreeBSD binaries. Now, I'll admit I'm no genius, but it looks to me like the linux glibc, etc binaries aren't up yet. I could easily be wrong, but I am quite confused.

Now penguins can post to slashdot, but will we notice the difference?
And we care because? This is possibly the dumbest story ever posted to Slashdot. Of course, Slashdot sucks now anyway, so it fits in.

Or you could just download and use rpm....or maybe get alien and convert it to .deb packages....either seems like less work than rpm2tgz
