  2. Re:Homeschoolers are bizarre on Grade School And High School, School Free · · Score: 2

I'm a homeschooler currently, in high school, and I basically agree. for the first 14 years of my life I had little or no social interaction because of wacky psycho-conservative Christian parents trying to shelter me, and it's a problem I never recognized until recently. I've been socially crippled in a lot of ways that are going to affect me for my whole life.

the bright side of homeschooling is, however, that I've come to appreciate the time that I have by myself, alone, for deep thoughts and such. that's an advantage I have that some homeschoolers really don't.

generally homeschoolers end up either TREMENDOUSLY insecure, or so sheltered and deluded that they think they're ok. it's really sad how some turn out.. but if given the chance, I wouldn't change how I was raised at all, because it's helped me build character I may not have otherwise. OTOH, perhaps nullifying everything I just said, I'm definitely sending my kids to public school. :)

not much more to say than is in the subject. Anyone read 'A Spell for Chameleon' by Piers Anthony? The main character, Bink, had a magic talent, which was luck... he always managed to get out of predicaments and he could not be killed, essentially. Could it be that Jar Jar is unconsciously wielding the force in this way? Because you see him get in stupid situations but never *quite* gets killed... but that's kind of dumb. --- You know what? I didn't think about the name correlation until I wrote this. Interesting.

'Jar Jar could Boba Fett' ? Christ, man, who came up with that load of BS?

As for Jar Jar being an integral part of the storyline, I hope to hell he's Anakin's first victim as Vader.

okay. let's clear things up. model = 3d object player model = 3d object with animations skin = painted texture applied to model. as for Jar Jar, I actually made a Quake 2 model of it which was, unfortunately, never finished. I've thought about doing it for Quake 3, and even had some requests for that, but that's not really feasible due to the three-part model system Quake 3 has... the head model can't have any animations, and that can't be changed, so Jar-Jar's ears would be poking through his body pretty much all the time, and that'd be uuuugly.

  15. damn the media... on Studies Say Video Games Increase Violent Behavior · · Score: 1

this whole thing more than likely wouldn't be any sort of issue if the media hadn't twisted it into something it's not.

let's speak from the teenage demographic everyone seems so concerned about. I'm 15, home-schooled, and have had a computer of my own since I was 8. Once a month I go out to shoot guns and set up targets with my big brother, and, yes, I play violent video games, and even plan to make a career in game development.

I also daily listen to heavy metal.

in addition to this, my parents are ultraconservative Christians and can be, at times, overbearing or excessively hard on me. some of their beliefs and perceptions are utterly absurd and have ended up hurting me mentally or physically, though completely unintentionally.

all of my friends honestly expect me to go crazy and kill a bunch of people in a murderous rage, just because of that combination of factors. bullsh*t.

despite the fact that my parents have not offered me the best childhood I could have had, they raised me with a strong sense of reality (no Santa, no Easter Bunny, no Tooth Fairy, no monsters, no ghosts ("except the Holy Spirit!"), nothing like that of any kind) and my personality and life are built on a strong moral foundation. I can tell the difference between what's real and what's not and frankly that seems like the biggest problem to me in these school shootings, if we're looking to blame something. honestly, these kids may have been perfectly sane and WANTED to kill people and terrorize their school. who knows?

when I play a game it's usually to relieve pent-up aggression. soldier of fortune is a good, recent example. the damage system in the game registers head shots, neck shots, chest shots, stomach shots, groin shots, arm shots and leg shots, and all the parts change dynamically (shoot in head, head is gone and gushes blood, shoot in neck, grasps neck and tries to hold in throat, shoot stomach, intestines spill out, shoot arm\leg, arm\leg falls off and sprays blood). that's a great game for me because instead of actually physically killing someone (or myself) I release my anger on these tiny little computer-generated things, and I feel better. it's my choice whether or not I should take that into the real world or not, and I'm fully aware of that.

    it's all about personal responsibility.

It'd be kind of funny seeing what their programs would look like in Linux though, I'm not a Linux user myself but I've used it before, and MetaCreations software is the EXACT opposite of Linux: Eyecandy over functionality.
