my powerspec 400 mhz celeron running win 98 would happily run for a month or more at a time inbetween reboots... and that was a shitty ass computer. 11 days is nothing. my tibook has been running continiously for 18 months now (with brief reboots for OS updates & critical security patches) with 6 crashes, 4 of them software.
that's still a 12% discount for somthing that plays more media and has a wider selection of games and accessories. i don't lose the ability to play PS1 games, i just pay $90 to play PS1 & 2 games.... not a bad deal, considering the fact that used PS2 games are dropping into the $15-25 range, plus all the PS2 games i can borrow from my friends; not a bad deal overall from my standpoint.
i think i'll trade in my PS One for store credit now, whatever they'll give me for it, before the price drop, and use that as a down payment on a refurb'd PS2 once the price drop in happens, thank you very much. keep my library of games and backwards compatibility, plus pick up a semi-decent backup DVD player for probably $109 @ gamestop (not counting the trade in credit for the PS One).
what??? no water in the baltimore or boulder race??? i thought this was a requirement! My fav thus far is a unicyclist wearing one of those fly fishermans's floaty intertube things.
and it's not even that popular of an option. i don't even own the game, and i've showed that health trick to at least 3 of my friends who own the game and they didn't even know it existed. it's one of those things you'd have to read about in the news to find out about it. one thing the news doesn't point out (often, at least) is that after your romp in the woods, you can kill the hooker and reclaim all of your $$$ and then some. either way, it's not somthing i'd be worried about my kids learning about; if they do learn about it, it'll be by word of mouth in school, somthing you can't control regardless, and if they do hear about it in school, they're probably nearing the age when they should start to learn about the realities of the world around them. I learned about sex on the playground in 3rd grade, two years before sex ed. I found my dad's "nudie mags" between the matresses in 5th grade, and I like to consider myself well adjusted. people don't give kids enought credit for taking what they learn with a grain of salt. ok i'm done ranting.
go rent brazil, directed by terry gilliam, one of they monty python guys. very good movie. see those itsy bitsy monitors they have? infront of them is one of those flat magenfying glass things that come in those kid's science kits. they're plastic and have concentric circles. you commonly see them in the rear window of RV's.... you could probably pick one up for a cool $20 at the RV store that comes in a 25" size.

the 18" sattelite dish companies transmit the discovery channel in HDTV and there's a couple others. i think you can get a HDTV signal for a couple of TV shows on fox and various sports games (superbowl, ncaa final four, etc).... but it's not really there yet. i own a (12", 20 year old) tv, and that's for playing video games on when the computer with the tv tuner card dies, and to catch things on tv like september 11th and the spaceship columbia that the net just isn't fast enough for yet. i watch my dvd's on my tibook otherwise. no HDTV in my future, until they stop news broadcasts in an analog signal.
1. go to hardware store, buy 3M ac/heat/ventilation filter
2. go home, remove side of case
3. duct tape filter to side of case
4. set fans to blow "out" rather than in. you'll notice your case temp drop considerably.
works well for me. you can usually scrape the crap off the filter, as filter itself is good for about a million cubic feet of air. so you only need to buy a new filter every 3 years or so.
If you're looking for great 5-30 minute distractions, you might consider racing simulators, which, once you remove the arcade-y physics and get somthing like Ferrari F355 Challenge, can be (extremely) challenging and mentally rewarding, especially with the computer assists turned off.
-Have YOU ever had to tell a "new user" to click Start to Stop their computer?
heh, i know it's a joke, but it's all in the marketing; instead of telling the user somthing using contradicting terms like "Start" and "Stop", you just say "to start to turn off your computer, click the start button, and then click the 'shut down' button, and follow the instructions from there"
nifty. i like that over my app folder in the dock, but it's not quite the start bar clone i'm looking for. i'm still adopting tiger launch though, it's definately faster. hopefully someone will code up an exact clone, the one i'm thinking about for OS 9 even said "start" on it... but this will suffice for now. thanks!
-I love the scroll wheel. It is possibly the most significant UI innovation of the last ten years.
While the scroll wheel is up there, and i do love it, I'd have to say microsoft's application menu (aka the "start button") is the most significant UI innovation in the last 10 years.... think about it, what does X11 come with? a start button knock off... the feel of windows hasn't changed significantly since 95, it's still mostly centered around the start bar once you strip away all the candy from XP. i mean think about it, for a new user, they see a button that says "START" on it.... it can't get much simpler than that. It's so successful that OS 9 even has a third party start bar app out there.... unfortunately OS X doesn't have one yet, and I have to make do with right clicking on the applications folder in the dock. hopefully this'll be rectified soon.
erm, yes, 3/4" or better yet 1" would do the trick. sorry, i've been researching making dinghys out of 1/4" plywood for the past month... also depends on the span between the supports for the wood, although judging from what had been previously mentioned about the bend, it's a fairly signifigant distance, so 1" would be warranted.
i'll agree with that. corperations are throwing out decade+ old sturdy-as-a-tank 17" NEC MultiSyncs, specifically of the 5FGp series. the manufacture dats says oct. 1991. I picked one up at boeing surplus 5 years ago (1998) for $75.... weighs a good 75-90 lbs, has at least two extra connectors on the back i've never seen before or since. been from dallas to seattle and back twice, numerous lan parties, still has stable picture, no discoloration, and runs all day @ 1600x1200 @ 70Hz, and i've ran it as high as 1792x1344 @ 60hz with a crisp picture.
when this thing dies, i'm just gonna get another one, assuming this thing doesn't outlast me, which wouldn't suprise me.
My computer desk is not too happy, though. The thing is HEAVY (77lbs, according to the specs), and the sag of the cheap particle board is quite noticible. (keeping fingers crossed I don't hear a crack/crash in the middle of the night)
measure the dimensions of the piece of misbehaving particle board, or trace it on some butcher's paper/carboard/duct taped together newspaper, go down to home depot and buy a piece of 8x4' 1/4" plywood (no more than $16), trace your pattern onto it, and have them saw the pattern drawn onto the board. replace the POS particle board with somthing that won't break or sag and protect your $200 investment. if you're picky, grab a 1 pint can of stain and a 30 cent 3M foam brush to color match the visible parts.
my circa 1991 17" NEC monitor weighs at least 75 lbs (but it does 1792x1344@ 60hz and cost me $75 second hand 5 years ago). i'd say 77lbs is light for a modern 21" monitor.:P
fuck that, i want the same functionality MS cardfile did for me in windows 3.1 - dial the number for me. huzzah for "large type" in the address book, but it's not particularly damn difficult to put the capability to dial that phone number for me and put me on speaker phone. so long as i have a modem, i want this capability. i'll pick up on handset if the need arises, but what i'd give for a freeware solution or actual apple software to do this....
It was either U-571, or maybe it was K-19: The widowmaker, but didn't they give the sailors red wine, a glass a night to slow the absorbtion of radiaton? Or was that just an 'old wive's tale'?
I'll second that. Actually, when I am looking to purchase an Item i can't find reviews on amazon.com, i'll google "buy _item name_" and check out who's selling it and get more info and actual prices. this is how i found my current firewire dealer, and has worked out great.
This means me and my friend will be able to play Descent 1 without the originally gentle bobbing of the ship sped up to a nauseating earthquake speed! Dust off that copy of Descent and try it for yourself. I dare you to try and play for 15 minutes without getting a nauseating headache!

here's a link that gives a pretty good explination for them. they use in the reverse application that the ask slashdotter would use them for.

When I can buy the 64 bit optimzed version of UT 2003, let me know. Otherwise Sun, IBM and Redhat can keep their non-consumer hardware and software.
