"So while your computer may have a processor that can handle this, many smaller consumer devices don't..."
Ok im sorry, but I keep hearing this arguement and it is pure and utter crap. Nobody, and i mean like, NOBODY, is ever going to want to run 1080p on a tiny little 3" screen. I know we'll the get the arguement of "but what if they want to hook it up to a TV", but in the real world, people don't do that. Heck, most people are amazed at the fact you can plug a computer into a TV.
So seriously, yes H.264 is a better standard but stop this arguement for why because its just wrong.
Yes, its a fantastic article that. I think you'll find most regular players of games like Counter Strike Source, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, etc,, all know this but few actually understand how it works.
The problem in Counter-Strike source is that while the got they server-side lag compensation to a tee, they never quite got the client prediction correct. However in newer games (namely those based on the orangebox engine such as Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Day of Defeat: Source) they mastered that too. As an avid player of Team Fortress 2 I must say the difference it makes is fantastic. Team Fortress 2 is quite playable at pings of 250ms for average players (although the quicker your reactions and higher your skill level, the more noticable it will be). I live in Scotland and I can play on servers in Australia without it feeling like a slideshow (although generally, its a nightmare playing on any server outside Europe).
On a side note, I do love how this post was massively bashed by people taking it entirely out of context. That post had actually nothing at all to do with computer science, all he was asking was simply: is the limit of accuracy for calculating such things the speed of our calculators or the data we have to put into them.
With a bit of fiddling I managed to get it work to run Call of Duty 4 but it is a massive hassle; not that its a huge issue as I play Team Fortress 2 (quite deep into the competitive 6v6 scene) mainly. The real reason for Punkbuster not working is actually nothing to do with with Windows 7, its to do with Punkbuster fiddling around in areas where it has ABSOLUTELY NO buisness being. It seeds itself in a rootkit. While I haven't investigated further, I know it dumps alot of files into the C:\Windows\System32 . What on earth something that essentially just needs to keep an eye on background processes interfering with another process is doing there I have no idea.
Stop being a pernickity little asshole. You know exactly what he meant. All this has happened before and will happen again... is essentially the underlining meaning and final word on the newer TV series.
Now go troll somewhere else.
Hehe, Ive heard of lolcode in the past but thats first time ive seen it actually used.
For those of you unaware (and to save a little googling), lolcode is essentially an alternative compiler for VB.Net with all the syntax and functions being written in lol-cat style language.
.MOV is actually a fairly good format. It may not be open but NOTHING in the higher-end video editing spectrum is. Personally I used to do some small time recording of a local bands with a few DV cams. Just like some bands who wanted live demos, then often link it up with a stereomix. While I brought along 3 DV cameras with me, I'd often have people who'd recorded it on their digital cameras email me there videos and these were more often than not in.MOV format. Most amateur editors/producers use Sony Vegas (I personally use Premiere Pro) which supports.MOV format. Infact the only editing program ive ever found that dosen't support.MOV is Windows Movie Maker which no self respecting editor would use in a million years anyway.
Me thinks you should stop putting videos of your brilliant nights out on Youtube, Nobody wants to see them.;)
I thought that the phenoms could do triple channel if you put them on an AM3 board, IIRC Intel has the memory controls on the chip itself and and AMD puts them on the motherboard
Not true, AMD have had memory controllers on the chips since AM2 came out. Intel simply followed in that entirely logical pattern with 1366 socket.
I have to agree with you here.
Just tonight, Im back from sorting out a 30 year old with her new laptop. She picked up for the bargain price of £370. Specs are as follows:
Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz (don't recall the model number but it was Penryn based).
3GB RAM
250GB HDD
Intel Integrated Graphics
15.6" 16:9 1366x720
Now, people, seriously. That is EXTREMELY cheap for a machine of that spec. Thats actually faster than my own laptop which I am currently typing this on. After buying it she took it straight to me, didn't even open the box. Given her needs, I thought Ubuntu with Hamachi on there for the purposes of remote assistance would better suit her (and given her response, it seems to be a winner). After having her bloatware filled, 4 year old XP system, she constantly kept remarking how fast it was, and the thing is it was bloody fast! It was at the desktop in under 30 seconds, and considering the most heavy app she is likely to run is brasero for copying CD's, theres no way thats needed.
As a gamer myself, I have to say that gamers in general are a pretty silly lot. They seem to care about how many FPS they get in crysis or whatever, but the point I always make is that they don't spend 20 hours a week playing crysis, they spend it playing Team Fortress 2 which isn't in the same league in regards to resources used. As a previous poster stated, Team Fortress 2 can run happily on a 5 year old PC.
Fast computers are only required to run more bloatware courtesy of the OEMs (not microsoft, the OEMs). Windows may seem slow versus a finely tuned install of Slackware, but just try it running a million and one 90 day trials.
Any other software installed besides the default would like be written by third parties and thus, any security that would cause is not the fault the OpenBSD dev's, i.e. if someone found a huge security hole in Apache, thats not OpenBSD's fault.
Greatly. Although I think steam has already made most of the features of xfire entirely obsolete. If it implemented something like a ventrilo style server based chat system it would be fantastic and an instant win.
Whats wrong with debian? Yes, CentOS and the likes are great but Debian is still a very good OS and its really just opinion of whether you prefer the APT or RPM system. Personally I use both. I have a dedicated server currently running a small number of Source-based Game servers and my home server is running CentOS 5.2.
Debian Lenny is a great OS, its not really a complete re-write, but thats the point. Its a good, mature system which can only get better.
And what operating system were you referring to? Windows? Sorry but most people aren't happy to buy Server 2008 for a small project like this. My guess is that more than half the people following this tutorial will be many who, like myself about a year ago, were keen on learning about linux.
"Scotland is a lot less populated."
Well I wouldn't contest that, but what I would say is that the majority of the population lives in the 5 largest cities. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness. Much of those that live in the highlands are simply small farming villages who genuinely - shock, horror - have no need for the internet. That is what the government fails to realise.
Its all fine and well to say we need to modernise the country the bottom line is that they will, like they have done on countless other occasions, spend a vast amount of money on this project for a very small number of people who weren't even asking for it anyway.
Absolutely spot on. I modded you +1 interesting for that.
Now does anyone have any suggestions? Preferably someone who works with the "users" as they would probably come up with something an end-user would better comprehend.
What are you talking about?
I run multiple TF2 game servers and I can assure that the in-game browser (even the in-game stats pop-up ones) are having your PC get the data and render it in IE. Theres is absolutely ZERO web data streamed from the game server.
Also, even the MOTD data is taken locally. This is the MOTD on all my servers:
http://www.epicbananaclan.co.uk/motd/motd.php
Ive checked apaches logs and on map change, that page is accessed from a number of IP's, ive even checked that those IP's were also those of gamers playing.
Well, you could always get a low-spec VDS in the UK, and set it up on that? I thought of doing that for a small fee for the poor people in Australia when the "great firewall of australia" was going to come in. Im fairly active on one of the larger forums there and I know alot of the people I regularly speak to would happily pay a small subscription fee for it.
I am in the UK and im glad of this sudden outburst from the department of "no shit sherlock".
THE PSU ONLY DRAWS WHATS ASKED OF IT!!!
Seriously, its quite silly. A 700 watt PSU will only draw 700 watts if the components in the PC ask for 700 watts.
Ye, Well personally I don't like the game for its pure reddiculous-ness (if thats even a word). Im talking about the sort of boys who get excited over, well, things that age of boys get excited about. Like general destruction, etc,,,
Now whether it actually just fuels them at that age or actually has any long term psychological effects is open for interpretation (i personally feel the former), its certainly far worse than kids playing with proper teamwork in CSS, TF2, etc,,,
Well, Im a fairly keen player of Team Fortress 2 (an HL2 mod) and not one for violence in games. All of the quake based games are the properly violent ones, and even then, they aren't really what you'd call violence in comparison to many films today. So lets take the properly violent games, for example, Mortal Combat. If you aren't familiar with the game (even with its extremely catchy theme tune from the original) then it bassically consists of smashing as many virtual bones as possible in your opponent through means of some extremely reddiculous kung-fu style moves and then "finnishing them" by some extremely gruesome means involving the map. For example one map involves kicking them off the side of a rock a couple of hundred feet and them landing speared on rock. And despite its rating, its clearly aimed at rowdy 8-12 year old boys, AND their parents are happy to buy it for them.
Now please explain to me what makes games such as HL2 (which is actually one of the more inteligent and thoughtful games currently out) are a disaster for children to have?

Well if thats the case, Why is every other laptop I have ever heard of getting better battery life with Win7 RC than Vista; EXCEPT for Macbooks?

Mod +1 fail at most commenters on this
Aye.

If you think that, you've COMPLETELY missed the point of the game.
Yours truly, Garrys Mod Player

As long as they still come in a blonde, 7 foot tall edition, then i welcome our new cylon overlords.
