Wow.. your rant was ripped right out of the Michael Moore''s handbook how to start controversy without providing any real factual data to back it up.
Just rhetoric and moveon.org flavored flamies.... good job!... remember, everytime you use the word 'corporation' in your rants, you need to say it with a mean sneer.. example: "The Corrrrrporations!"
Completely pointless exercise, most big spammers are going to be using a outbound only load balanced relay of some kind, they won't be accepting the mail in from the same exit point.
This is complete crap....

Heh, they should of quoted all of what I said, - if you go to my site, read the rant and you'll understand.
I made it a point to say that portal sites who's site do not share a common theme are worthless, a supermarket shares the theme of 'food' - some portal sites have no theme at all, and thus - poor uniform demographics.

I've worked for a troubled CLEC, and from what I've seen, ALL CLECs are in trouble.
Most of them can't compete with the ILECs in the local fone service market, more over - the CLEC mentallity of "we can do it all" is crushing the ones who otherwise may have stood a chance.
CLECs want to be *your* local carrier, long distance carrier/exchange, and your broadband provider.
CLECs are primary telco, lets face it - thats the type of company they need to be, their hardware is going to be physically located in a ILECs CO anyways. So these are Telco companies - yet they've entered into the failing marketplace of dsl, without even striking out victories as an alternative to ma'bell for local service.
The CLECs all seem to be dying now, classic case of putting the cart before the horse.
Peering is what makes the internet work, (in a round-about way) the internet is nothing but various connected networks, when you peer with another network, you link to them - you have a ircut put in between you - and them, you allow traffic leaving your network, to enter thiers.
think of this in terms of traceroute results, lets use PSI & Exodus for example (and for the sake humor considering they cut off peering with each other over the summer)
To get to Exodus, from PSI (now they do not peer) a customer must travel thru another network, - this adds more hops to the path.
I havent run a traceroute between them in ages, but if PSI is lucky, a network they peer with / also peers with Exodus - etc.
if not, even more hops will add up.
Now I've given the example, you can see why peering is good for ALL USERS, when your ISP peers, it makes less hops and usually faster transit between your ISP and the ISP they peer with -
In short, peering is good for the net - peering IS the net.
Also, after reading the article, I think it's misleading, the article is not really saying UUNET will offer free peering. Read it again:)
I make a webcomic that ranks in the top five web-only comics, and I can tell you, it is not a good way to make money right now.
There are only a couple, web-only comics that make a 'good' amount of money. The rest are plagued by adbanner troubles, I don't want to rant on about the various adbanner networks dying.. Personally, I think UGO will be the next to bite the bullet.
Merchandise is a nice way to make some revenue, but it's not really enough to justify doing a comic full-time.
I tell other people interested in making a webcomic, to not quit their day job.

If it wasn't for Katz, this place would be too one-sided.. I like him, I don't normally agree with him, but his posts beats the hell out of seeing 1,000 messages that go something like this.. "Linux Rules!" "BSD Sucks!" "MS Sucks!" "Hot grits down my pants!" at least with Katz's posts, you get the following instead... "Katz Rulez!" "Die Katz!" "Hot grits down my pants!" see the difference?
I just finished reading the article, I suggest all of you take the time to read it, its a good breakdown on the current situation of that tiny pebble that Tim Oreilly rolled down the mountain to Jeff Bezos, and is now a giant snowball thats hit the rest of America. I never would have thought that Tim Oreilly would be the inspiration that could ultimately change patent laws in this country.. wow, the power of flame mail..
