  1. Be careful when using cygwin on Cheap Software Languages for NT? · · Score: 2
Be careful when using cygwin! The cygwin library is GPL, not LGPL, so any software you write that uses the cygwin library must be GPL, unless you buy a cygwin contract. If the software you write is for yourself or for internal use for your company, you should be alright. You may want to check out the actual GPL and faqs for it at GNU's site. If your company has a lawyer team, you may want to consult them too.

Seeing that you have to talk to the redhat sales team for a contract, I imagine it's pricey.

  3. UTV vs TiVo on Microsoft's Family Room Change · · Score: 2

It's almost perfectly integrated with DirecTV. That's something that Tivo lacks, and most Tivo owners don't know they're missing. For example, it's a bitstream-pure capture from the satellite.
I think this is a bad example of what TiVo lacks. DirectTiVo's also do this...

All the guide information is captured with the program - click Info when you watch a recording, and you get all the title and description, no matter how much later you watch it.
Okay, instead of clicking "Info", you click on the right arrow on TiVo.

The expanded guide is terrific - title, actors, and plot summary for every movie and most serial shows.
Tivo's give you this, plus original air date, episode numbers, directors, writers, and executive producers in some cases.

I'll give you that the UTV probably has better integration with your VCR. However, the hackability of the TiVo units is incredible...

  4. Re:ah, the noble apostrophe on Emigrating DVD's? · · Score: 1, Offtopic

Funny, my college grammar book (The Modern Writer's Handbook), and the MLA handbook gives cases where it's proper to use the apostrophe for plurals.

From The Modern Writer's Handbook: Add an apostrophe and s to form the plural of words being named, letters of the alphabet, abbreviations, numerals, and symbols. The apostrophe _may_ be obmitted with capitals without periods: TVs, UFOs, PhDs.

So, according to this rule, DVD's, DVDs, and dvd's are all okay. "dvds" is not.

The MLA handbook says pretty much the same, except do not use them with numerals or abbreviations.

In this case, DVDs and dvds are correct, while dvd's and DVD's are incorrect.

I haven't learned that much from these books, but I do remember some of the obscure rules...

To be on-topic, wouldn't it be possible to use DeCSS to rip a DVD, transcode it from PAL to NTSC, and then burn it to a DVD-R?

It may not be cost effective, seeing that the last time I looked DVD-R's are about the same price as DVD movies.

  6. Re:Why? on What Computer Speakers Do You Use? · · Score: 1

One reason to use computer speakers would be to avoid a ground loop. I have my computer hooked up to my stereo, and I created a nasty ground loop. I tried putting in a radio shack ground loop isolator. While it muted the ground loop, it also killed my bass.

So, I figure I have a few options: One, try to get everything on the same ground. This would be nearly impossible, since my computer is running through the UPS, and I don't have access to my cable company's grounding. Second, buy a more expensive ground loop isolator. Third, get a sound card with a digital out and an amp that has a digital in.

If the original poster goes with the amp, instead of speakers, I recommend looking at amps with digital inputs. The info pages on his sound card says it has a digital output.

  12. If computer programs aren't expressive speach... on Report From The 2600 Appeal Hearing · · Score: 5

If computer programs aren't expressive speach, then according to the Copyright office's website, it won't be covered under copyright law. See
Circular 1, which lists Copyrightable works. They don't have a category for compute programs, but make this recommendation:

For example, computer programs and most "compilations" may be registered as "literary works"

It goes further by saying that "works that have not been fixed in a tangible form of expression" "are generally not eligible for federal copyright protection".

So, if programs aren't expressive speach, then where does that leave the copyright status of the million of computer programs out there? Is that a Pandora's box that the court wants to open?

Now, I'm not a copyright lawyer, so I'm not sure where or if this is in actual law. If anybody else knows, I'll be interested in hearing.

If you ever need two-way paging needs, check out the Motorola Timeport 935. It has very similiar PIM applications like the Palm and can beam information too/from a Palm. Problem is, 3rd party application support is sparce.

The idea of hiding the product seems counterintuitive to me. http://www.netscape.com/netscape should be the home page, and the current home page should be http://portal.netscape.com, http://search.netscape.com, or something like that.

This was an audio CD, and not a VCD, though.

The only CD-R I have with music on it doesn't work. It has a data track first and then an audio track second, which may be confusing the thing.
