Maybe not for the same price as 35 dollar, but then again the RPI doesn't cost 35 dollars in this country but 55$ when you calculate all the "hidden" costs.
Wait a little and you will have ARM based (Allwinner) hack friendly that will do circles around the RPI. There are a lot of similar devices in the pipeline.
Mele A2000 can be picked up as cheap as 70$ last times I looked
* Cortex A8 1Ghz
* Mali GPU (if I'm not mistaken completly open source driver instead of RPI blobs)
* 512MB DDR RAM
* SATA
* HDMI/VGA/Component
* HDMI / Optical Out / Stereo
* Ethernet/WIFI
* Extremly hackable
* Case
That whole XBMC thing was brilliant from a marketing POV. By laying the focus on XBMC a lot of people had the impression that it was a very capable board. "Because when it can handle 1080p movies it must be powerfull no ?"
Then again the foundation marketed the thing as a capable little PC which can play games , where you can do word processing, spreadsheets, etc. I really don't understand the criticism against the engadget reviews that they try out basic stuff like browsing. Shouldn't we anno 2012 expect from a "capable PC" that it can do browsing ?
I wouldn't consider the Engadget review to be negative. They tried to use the board for things it wasn't designed to do (like play Youtube or Flash videos), and it failed to do so. Big deal. The people who are actually trying to buy these boards would likely know better.
The reviewer didn't seem to have a clue what they were doing... they complained about having to type in the startx command to start the GUI, for pete's sake. If anything, the review did a better job of making Engadget look bad than the product they were reviewing.
That said, it's easy to think of negative things to say about the Pi... like the lack of supply. I've been on the waiting list for one for over a month now, and I haven't even been given an estimated shipping date at this point.
"They tried to use the board for things it wasn't designed to do"
Funny that you say that
What’s a Raspberry Pi?
It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video.
Just don't exagerate like that, it's not all that bad, trust me.
You see it from a technical POV. I don't see it from a technical POV but from a view of more openness and competition. If I had the enormous profits influenced by a monopoly, I would also could keep the network up to speed. And when viewed against our neighboring countries (and not some backward country) the price/performance ratio is not that good.
blame your socialist friends for fscking up your country, not NVA
Typical reaction everybody who isn't a N-VA supporter is a friend of the socialists... . It is frightening how small minded some are in that regards. It reminds me of stories what my grandfather told me about WW2.
I didn't blame the NVA for the slow adoption of the law I say that the future doesn't seem bright regarding changes because the next party that will come in power will certainly have the same attitude against those companies as the rest.
First of all the cookies is only a single part of the recommendations the EU wants Belgium to implement, so insinuating that Belgium is getting fined about cookies is false. And as a Belgian citizen I applaud the EU involvement because there are to much conflicts of interests on our political level.
Let me inform you about my country. In Belgium we have a duopoly. Belgacom (Belgian symbol) on federal level and Telenet (Flemish symbol but ironically property of the American company Liberty) which was formed to break up the monopoly of Belgacom on Flemish level.
Both companies have a lot of politicians on the payroll, in the board of directors/as 'consultants', etc And because on each level it is a symbol and the current language difficulties that dominates our politician landscape, politician turn a blind eye for the fact that those companies have a very negative impact on our region and country. When our national bank warns in a study for the negative impact of those two companies, it just gets ignored. We have a saying "who's bread you eat, who's word you speak... "
We have very high prices in comparison with our neighbors, Telenet does deep packet inspecting slowing down torrents by day for example, we have unlimited download which is a joke, they created hw monopolies, they buy companies that because of their open character of very competitive plans (like unlimited mobile plans that doesn't cost a house) to kill them or for example just go for their main supplier. They buy licenses for example 4G just to do nothing with it, just to be sure that no foreign competition would arrive. Etc
For example of one the influence they have on laws or on our politicians. We have an in-depended organisation that "tries" to regulate the telecom word on local level, BIPT. Last week they voted a new law that states that when BIPT makes changes or gives fines, the government can revoke those fines or turn back changes. So what is the point ?
Really I've read a lot of bickering about the EU and there may be a lot not right, but hey I'm happy that on some cases something like the EU exists.
And when the Flemish (I'm flemish btw) right wing party the N-VA will come in power, it will be worse because of the big love for the "flemish" symbol Telenet. Although Telenet is as flemish as a big mac these days.
There are numerous antitrust enforcements or investigations against European companies. Even ones with very hefty fines. The reason you don't hear about it is that this mostly isn't picked up by non European news agencies.
It isn't about it are "American" companies if that is what you are insinuating. I personally think it also has to do that in America companies get a way with a lot more (America is led by corporations imho) in the states and then they are confronted with a continent that put them more on a leash to more or less protect their citizens.
The warranty thing with Apple and Europe is for me a class book example.
False Nokia asked cross licensing deals for Apple technology which it didn't ask to other manufactures. Apple wanted to pay for those licenses but under the same provisions as the other manufactures. Can you blame them ?
Every time those agencies makes a fart, stock prices seems to drop. I am no stock market guru, but I have seen some shares increasing over 20% in one week after such a drop, so there is a lot of money to make with that kind of power/manipulation.
The problem is also that those companies are not transparent so there is always a lot of room for manipulation. And everyone knows when you have a lot or to much power, abuse is not far away. They tend to hide after the fact that their reputation is on stake, but these are the same companies that give high ratings to banks that triggered the "bank crisis"... . What reputation ? To be honest it baffles me that after that whole mess there are still people who trust these organisations. Everyone makes mistakes but one thing that was clear that the whole ordeal stank.
What I also don't understand is why - and what makes those agencies imho unreliable - is why it took so long to target the US but the same companies targeted countries that "relative" are in "better shape" then the US. Here in Europe I hear more and more people thinking that this has something to do with weakening the euro against the extremely weak dollar.

As a friend told me that has worked at sony in the past, Sony exists out of multiple independed entities. So it is perfectly normal that one department is real cool and relaxed and another department is a real PITA.
For example Sony DVD players supports divx for a long time (I have a really old one) which their movie department isn't that happy about. 90% of the people using DIVX aren't playing legal content.
Sony Imageworks for example has some real cool open source projects which I really love.
But then again it is slashdot where hate and FUD prevails over truth and logic. Funny how Microsoft tactics and shenanigans are so popular within the slashdot crowd.
Oh and btw Google and Microsoft also has a license (like Apple) so thinking this is only or could be only an IOS/Apple problem is very very naive.
In a series of blog posts, the company notes that Google and Microsoft have taken out licences, but notes that "so far no one has asked" whether apps written on those platforms might be liable for licence fees.
Oh boy I can't wait for the typical slashdot hypocricy when the first android or WM7 developers are getting sued by Lodsys. Chairs will fly in a lot of basements.
If Apple actually tried to help someone other than Apple for a change i would be totally shocked
Yeah I really hate it when they try to force and create their own closed standards. All their products are infested with it. They don't give anything back, never submits something as an open standard they are just pure evil.
Here in Belgium Mediamarkt has tripled the space for blu ray because of the demand. Prices are also dropping fast, much faster then what the case was with the DVD. I picked up a lot of blu ray titels for 8€ (11$) a pop this month. I find it strange that I read here that movies sell for 29 dollars in the states as we in Europe mostly get shafted with regards of prices. For example I just ordered the matrix triology on blu ray for about 16€ (22$)
It is weird because I was an DVD early adapter and I have the feeling that blu ray is advancing much faster. Really when we didn't have the euro I payed about 1800 Belgian Franc (45€ or 64$) for the first matrix DVD. That was the reason that for a long time I just rented DVD because it was just to expensive to buy them.
I don't know how the situation is in the US but here in Europe it is really hard not to buy a non HD screen so that may be a reason. And I have seen that a lot of them comes in a blu ray combo or with a "free" player.
And as long as you think it only has to do with cult status and we are all blind fanatics, as long Apple will be and remain succesfull. Like a lot of companies "you don't get it". That is something I witness a lot of times that Geeks don't get "common" users. The think process always goes like this
- No SD card
- No Flash
- No GPL/Closed ecosystem
- No rooting
-...
So anybody that doesn't see this as a drawback is a follower from the "Apple cult". Never thought about the simple fact that 90% of the population just doesn't fucking care and has other priorities?
You know why I bought an ipad (which is the only apple product that I own)
- Quality wise they are dirt cheap if you compare it with Android tablets available in this part of Europe.
- IPS screen / and yes viewing angles doe matter
- Possibility of getting a Tablet without 3GS, 4GS, mumbojumbo Geek feature 456 that in practice I will never use...
- In pratice Flash on tablets seems to be a battery drain so having it is more a nuisance then something to shout about.
Yeah it isn't fair when the only Android quality tablet costs 700 euro's while I can pick up a 470€ iPad. You have cheap tablets in the range of 300 a 400€ with a TFT screen that out of the box doesn't work right and which you need to depend on community patches to make it workable.
Yeah it is all about the "Apple cult". Where was that cult when Apple was in trouble for the iPod launch ?
I find it funny that Microsoft suddenly is becoming "hobyist" friendly. When adafruit announced the contest they condemned the contest and it was "illegal" or against the EULA. That is when adafruit even doubled the bounty. They sign their hardware peripherals, they have regio coding,... . It is easy to be something if the cat is already out of the bag... .
The whole "we give geohot a WP7 because we support free tinkering" is really just a PR stunt. The day the guy would release the key to sign 360 games I don't think they will give him a free 360. They are even a member of the same anti piracy clubs as Sony... .
There is something wrong when Apple is less expensive then other brands. And yes I am aware that for a couple of hundred euros you could buy a cheap android tablet but at which cost sometimes ?
It is really funny when you see the cheap chinese stuff re-branded at an extremely higher price... .
I wanted to dive in into android but to be honest Apple doesn't have anything to worry about if these trends stays... I bought an ZTE blade smartphone (also a lot less expensive then the bigger brands with better specs, better resolution, more ram, gps , capacitive screen,... ) because the same trend seems to occur in the smartphone segment.
"The Application must not include software, documentation, or other materials that, in whole or in part..."
Which also means that applications linking (part) to LGPL licenses are incompatible. So that community port of QT (LGPL) to Windows Phone 7 doesn't matter as applications written in QT will be banned from the store. Don't you love Microsoft and their tricks ?
And this is also one of the many reasons we as an userbase or group of developers should mistrust Nokia in everything...
"He contacted Apple about it and Apple didn't react."
But did he contact them true the right channels... . As a commenter on that blog said mailing to the correct address results in an app being pulled in hours. And we have seen in the past that Apple really plugs the pull apps fast.
Wow, the "source" for this speculation is an IRC conversation.
Does that suprise you knowing this is Slashdot ? This sites seem to be the fox channel off technology sites. Heavy biased news , no fact checking and the editors have the journalistic integrity of a goldfish. And I know I'm kinda harsh to goldfishes species to compare them with the slashdot editors, so I'm sorry for that.
For a group of people that has combated Microsoft FUD they seem to like the same tactics... .
The checking of installed software for going online is nothing new. Microsoft bans modded consoles for a while now and the only way they can do that is when checking which software or hacks is installed... . It is not they are using magical fairy dust in Redmond that tells them that a particularly consoles has been modded or not.
Don't like it ? Don't agree with the terms of using their networks and go online.
Really is there a place for the geek community that has no (or less) bias ?
Is it funny he mentions webkit - maybe you should really look into what the engine of Chrome is based on. The same for mentioning Cocoa what the fuck has this to do with a videocodec ? And OpenCL also closed ? The fact that Apple doesn't use its weight to introduce closed tags, events like MS did with IE,... .
But then again this Slashdot - new for people with delusions and where everything is black and white.
If you or your agent or exclusive licensee institute or order or agree to the institution of patent litigation against any entity (including a cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that this implementation of VP8 or any code incorporated within this implementation of VP8 constitutes direct or contributory patent infringement, or inducement of patent infringement, then any patent rights granted to you under this License for this implementation of VP8 shall terminate as of the date such litigation is filed.
So the moment that somebody files a suit or have a valid claim you are in the same licensing pool bed as h.264 with the only difference that this format is controlled by a single company. And I really couldn't see anything going wrong that what... . And I always see the same link to a blog for a h.264 so it is automatically discarded as FUD but the matter of fact that it isn't the only source for that argument, even independent observers have stated that WebM may be not royalty free for long as it is unsure if it is not patent encumbered.
And being a webdeveloper that sometimes also deals with video I'm gonna burst a lot of bubbles. I will not be bothered by converting video anytime soon into WebM just for the simple fact that supporting Flash & h264 I can support the whole spectrum. Because it is free (for the time being ?) my software and hardware already supports h.264 so why should I care ? For that couple of cents that I pay more when buying videosoftware licenses ? That is a drop in a bucket... . Streaming is free (as long as your streams are free for consumers)
And you think 99% of the userbase cares if the console was region locked?
Hmm here in Europe there is a big user group importing a lot of games overseas because of the weak dollar. So no I don't think 99% cares, but I'm sure a big group cares...
Also let's not forget it was Sony that pulled the plug on PS3 Linux. They're the only company to ever REMOVE an official feature from a functioning console.
Oh yeah that was a feature that 99% of the userbase used. An OS that was serious gimped by lack of good videodrivers and a lack of RAM. I can buy a second hand computer for 40€ that ran Linux a lot better then how Linux ran in OtherOS mode. Are you serious ? Is anybody crying about Linux on the PS3 serious ?
* Wake me up when I can buy my games in any country (even been able to buy an asian version and even have the possiblity to play in my own language)
* Wake me up when don't sign their devices so I can buy any cheap third party device that I can think off. Like more USB ports, not a problem I can use a cheap 5$ usb hub not an "official" Nintendo/Microsoft thing
* Wake me up when I'm able to build my own joystick with arcade parts and use it on my console without any problems... .
But then again this is slashdot where there is no room for FACTS.... . And see it modded down to oblivion !
h264 should be officially killed as a web standard because it is payware.
Yeah because h264 is patended and WebM isn't. Have you read the agreement of WebM with regards of future patent claims ? Lets see how long it will take, VC-1 was also free with regards of price and patents... That went well didn't it ?
I did because in the newspaper I've read an article that Google states its doing this because h.264 is stiffing innovation and 'poor 3th world companies' need something like WebM to be developed. And also they fear mongered that the licenses of h.264 may become more expensive in the future. That last part is pure speculation and if such remark would be created by somebody in redmond they would classify this as FUD.
I was also interested because I saw claims (also here on slashdot) that if in the future there would be possible patent claims Google would defend us all. That was something I found fishy because that could become a very expensive operation. Then I looked at the licenses and behold.
If you or your agent or exclusive licensee institute or order or agree to the institution of patent litigation against any entity (including a cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that this implementation of VP8 or any code incorporated within this implementation of VP8 constitutes direct or contributory patent infringement, or inducement of patent infringement, then any patent rights granted to you under this License for this implementation of VP8 shall terminate as of the date such litigation is filed.http://www.webmproject.org/license/additional/
So the day that somebody has a valid patent claim - which isn't that unlikely if you are honest - on any of the techniques used, you are in the possible same situation as with h.264 and VC-1

The fact that Apple doesn't use its weight to introduce closed tags, events like MS did with IE, ...

Unless you are seriously good at both hardware and software, you are not going to be doing this for any of the current consoles.
Wrong ! It isn't that difficul see http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Assemble-a-Cthulhu-PCB/
And it works great on the ps3 !
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Assemble-a-Cthulhu-PCB/

So the day that somebody has a valid patent claim - which isn't that unlikely if you are honest - on any of the techniques used, you are in the possible same situation as with h.264 and VC-1
