I think a lot of sites will not bother with WebM and will fall-back on flash for those devices/browsers that doesn't support h264. Really h264 and flash and you can support a wide spectrum of devices. Chrome without support for at least would be death in the water... .
It seems that for streaming h264 will be free for life and with regards of paying for license for encoding material, those costs are already calculated in the price we pay for commercial video software anyway... . I can't really see why any of my clients for example would change to WebM... . The benefits for them are zero.
It is kinda funny (or hypocritical but that seems the norm with regards of wikileaks) you have a signature about "free speech and freedom". But don't care about something that is fundamentally about those 2 things... .
- Motorola started the patent case agains apple, motorola is the patent troll in this case
- Nokia requests patent and licenses which it doesnt require from other companies so discriminating Apple
And 90 procent of the posts will go about how apple is in fault here.... Yeah but they have patents so they are (more) evil then others. If they wouldnt have a patent portfolio they would be sitting ducks...
Yeah Sony shouldn't had removed the "Other OS" option as those hacks are being mostly used for supporting linux on those systems. That is why the whole modchip industry exist, just to cater the linux needs of people.
It is a shame that Linux is being used as an alibi because (even If I was also mad that they removed linux support) we shouldn't be hypocrites why these hacks in the first place exist... . It even doesn't matter if a Sony product does support linux as the mantra on slashdot is that it is not done to use sony products0 But then again I was thinking the same thing about flash, although when its about the iPad we are pro flash. Pffff sometimes it is really difficult to follow the slashdot party line.
You are aware of the fact that a lot of European IT people moved (mostly temporary) to Ireland to work there as they had trouble to fill in all the positions ? Who do you think will first be shafted ?
Yeah nintendo is so open. i can use a standard usb flashstick to save my savegeames. i can built my own usb based arcade stick , using my old usb based steering wheel... Thank god nintendo gives us so much freedom that im not limited to closed down propriate periphicals.
I love my nintendo ps3 !
"various groups publicly announced their intention to crack the system specifically because of the OtherOS removal"
Don't be naive... People will always tend to crack systems if it means they can get their games for free. The linux argument is just an alibi. Do you see a lot of linux related things comming out because of this hack ? Have you seen the boards ? 99% is about pirating games and emulating.
"I have multiple 3rd party controllers that no longer work with the PS3."
Was to be expecting no ? You can bet the PS4 will be as closed as hell. Goodbye cheap alternatives, goodbye cheap hdd replacements , goodbye toying and creating your own arcade controller that works fine on the PS3. But yeah now we can run linux, although 99% of the progress is about emulating games and pirating.
"With PC games I can still modify the games, and enjoy user made content"
Then those levels that I downloaded in modnations racers, little big planet,... where created by magical muppets I presume ?
Even with regards of the update of DirectX you still don't get around the shoddy programming sometimes which the only solution isn't a patch but upgrade, upgrade, upgrade.
Oh cool where can I buy Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet, Street Fighter, Halo 3 , Mario Galaxy ,... ? And with regards of the titles that are available, for how long will that be the case ? I was a pure PC gamer but support for the PC as gaming platform has been declining for years. It is very easy to say "pc gaming is dead" and I wouldn't dare say that, I rather say that gaming on the pc is on life support.
"But if you do learn it, it is powerful and flexible."
Exactly. I have experience in different CMS systems, even one that was developed in house (which was a nightmare) by some Fortune 100 company and to be honest while Drupal can be daunting once you grasp it is an extremely expendable system which you can completely transform.
"To change a single form's design, you had to install a module"
whut !?
"you need to go through core files of the mess that is called drupal"
There are hooks you know... . I have never ever needed to mess in the core files... .
"supposedly, it has a template system."
You can template everything from nodes, pages, fields, views,... . With hooks and templates you can have total control what the system outputs... .
" but, some elements are still hardcoded. not to mention that, there are css items that are defined in the core modules of drupal, forcing you to go mess with them instead of doing changes just in the template css."
I've never used the drupal core css items and used my own css files. Really reading your rant it seems you are extremely uninformed about how drupal works and what is possible... . If you don't output the drupal css files in your template and rel link to your own, you will only get your own css files. It isn't rocket science.
"i cant think that anyone development-sane would want to take on doing a serious ecommerce store with this pile of crap. of course, fans and zealots, aside. "
But this is slashdot "fabricated news, stuff that matters for fanboys". FFS sake some random blogger, CNET and a newspaper (that isn't so negative if you read that piece)
Do you remember this ?
"No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame."
And they wonder why Slashdot is declining in popularity.
Oh well they lost a potential android user here. I've waited for months to have an android tablet but even if you ignore the shoddy hardware sometimes, it is hard to overlook the fact that the App Store is something problematic. Because of the fact that Google don't give access to the app store every frikking manufacture introduces their own. And even in the hypothetical case that Google does let tablet users access the app store here in Belgium it wouldn mean sh*t as for some kind of reason it is impossible to buy paid apps in the android market. It is one big mess at the moment no matter how you put it.
I was done waiting and bought an iPad yesterday. The Samsung Galaxy Tab (the one that can make a dent in the iPad market) will cost about 700 euro here , making the iPad look dirt cheap.
Here in Belgium it's the same story. Telenet - which for 50% is owned by Liberty Global - that have a monopoly on cable television, started doing the same thing recently.
You can only rent their new set-top boxes and their boxes are the only ones available to watch digital cable television. They use DVB-C but they crippled it by using some kind of propriate DRM solution. The official explanation is that they only allow their own boxes to guarantee the stability of the cable network. It would be funny if it weren't sad that they try to scam consumers which such a ridiculous argument. Also that politician and most consumers let them get away with it
The official tune is that they only let people rent decoders because they are such a fuzzy warm company that "thinks at the consumer wallets". When letting consumers rent they don't need to buy "expensive" gear. The hilarious thing is that this tune is coming from a company that asks 50 euro just to get the thing working. They ask 50 euros to "active" (just flipping a bit) one (!) decoder. So if you have a household of 3 TV's you need to pay 150 euros just to get the decoders working.
There where some regions where there was another provider (in.di) that didn't encrypt the FTA channels and which you could pick up with any DVB-C decoder. Miraculously that company didn't have any problems with the cable network stability when they promoted and used more open solutions. Unfortunately that wasn't available in all regions and Telenet has taken over this company so the "good times" are over.
We don't have the possibility of class action lawsuits and politicians are selective deaf. They even rehash the same arguments about network stability, etc. When looking at the board of directors of this company you will notice that a lot of them are politicians... .
Not really but as MP3 is also a patent encumbered format (and is supported in the audio tag) it is the very logical next step to do not ?
Mod me down but you can't mod down the truth is that a company that is doing this move about openness should ban all non patent encumbered formats...
I think a lot of sites will not bother with WebM and will fall-back on flash for those devices/browsers that doesn't support h264. Really h264 and flash and you can support a wide spectrum of devices. Chrome without support for at least would be death in the water... .

Yeah motorola filles patent claims agains apple and so it is apple fault! How did you wrap your head against that one ?
oh dont be such a hypocrite. Microsoft can also add any conditions they like, lets see how the outcry then would be
- Motorola started the patent case agains apple, motorola is the patent troll in this case - Nokia requests patent and licenses which it doesnt require from other companies so discriminating Apple

Tell that to the Irish who will have to emigrate.
You are aware of the fact that a lot of European IT people moved (mostly temporary) to Ireland to work there as they had trouble to fill in all the positions ? Who do you think will first be shafted ?
If the ps3 driver (which I use) is an indication I dare to say no... He also sells sdks with regards of the ps eye.
