Coming up with an uninterrupted rectangular surface with evenly-rounded corners and a bezel is some of the greatest innovation of all time.
Thank you for this because I wanted to reply to the guy above you, that the problem is that the discussion seems to be always dumbed down or ridculized by talking about the "rectangle and round corners". If I follow the court-case in more detail, it seems a lot broader then a "rectangle with round corners".
And even then I'm not convinced that you can even patent a "rectangle with round corners", but then again I'm rather sure you are aware of that fact. I think your reaction is a classic way of not getting a discussion about the other arguments.
I didn't even had the time to reply, the rectangle argument was there at the speed of light. And don't say it is funny because after hundreds of time, the humor is wearing of.
Remember, all American's can have an impact on that decision.
But may I ask - as a European - how you could do that ? It doesn't seem that you can vote on the other guy because from my POV he seems worse then Obama regarding science. And politicians have the habit - once they are in power - not to listen to the public anymore.
We had him for a couple of days here in Europe and the general consensus was that he remind us a lot of Bush junior and that there is potential that he gets your country in another expensive war. The money will need to come from somewhere and the guy didn't come over as particularly bright or somebody who likes intellectual challenges which science provoke.
The problems is that those media companies are extremely greedy.
When people tend to say that the prices are high, you get the classic remark that a cost of zero is still more interesting then any price you would put onto a product. But I'm not that convinced. I'm sure there is a certain spot which you can convert people who download to paying customers.
I have about > 90 blu ray movies and a lot of box sets, but I do have my share of "free" stuff. The difference is that the things that I have bought come from sales (5 a 10€) or are imported from the UK and are the prices that I'm willing to pay.
The problem is that the "legal" way is just darn to expensive sometimes. For example I was searching for a particularly blu ray and they asked about 30 euro's for it (40 dollars) which I find way to high for 2 hours of entertainment. Then sorry I just rather take my sailboat and fish it out of the sea.
Unfortunately something that I witnessed is that the entertainment industry also seen the light and while in the beginning they dropped all the languages and subtitles on the blu ray - you know the sales argument everything could fit onto the disc - it seems they know are putting less languages and subtitles on to the disc mainly to discourage import.
So why are we discussing Apple and Microsoft's "tablet with detachable keyboard" instead of Asus Padfone or Ubuntu for Android, both of which are genuinely innovative?
Because this is Slashdot where "editors" rather post "news" that give people their daily "ranting" fix and also because it is commercial interesting. As an editor you know that posting this kinda of articles will get your number of page hits to the roof in no time.
I see it also on other sites where they have a group of followers that have a particularly negative feeling against one of multiple brands and where you can follow some metrics. Post a article of "hated" product X or brand Y and you will see the number of comments come in in a bigger rate then the other articles.
Pro or contra, we are all getting played for commercial motives.
If it would be me we would have less Apple articles, less Microsoft articles, less Raspberry pi advertisement, but more stuff for nerds like the Asus padfone or Ubuntu for Android... .
I don't see a lot of added value of this kind of news where the general discussion that follows how we hate Apple, how we hate Apple users, etc.
because I hear that kind of shit all the fucking time out of retards
Then you should do something about your social situations. Again I never hear "normal" people - and maybe I'm lucky - talk in that way. I say "normal" because I never understood why somebody gets so emotional about a brand
Maybe it is a cultural thing but I really what do you want me to say ? I never heard somebody talk in those terms. That they like Apple products and they swear by them yes. But I have also friends that have that feeling about their Android smartphone, hell I swear by Android for my smartphone... .
The only ones that talk constant about "magical", "revolutionary", "innovative",... - with the exception of a marketing movie when a new product has introduced - are people that are riding the iHate wave. I don't see a lot of normal people talking in such terms.
And then for some innovation is synonym for coming up with something completely knew or unheard of. If you take that as criteria, there aren't a lot companies that 'innovate' anymore.
Sometimes I have the feeling that hating the brand is as popular as owning something from that brand. It also remind me of a saying we have in Flanders "What the heart is full of, the mouth flows over..." .
To be honest It bugs me that there is so much spam on slashdot for the rpi but in all honesty I ordered one 3 days ago with farnell and even if it states that they ship within 5 weeks, I got a mail yesterday that it has been shipped.
While it is not the same as next day delivery it is certainly not the same situation where you need to wait weeks to get your order delivered.
The point is Apple fanbois such as yourself can't handle having Apple called out as being a thief just like Microsoft
That Apple "stole" the GUI from Xerox without the latter getting any benefits from it, is a myth. They made a ton of money (could be more as they sold to soon) with Apple shares that as a deal they got on the cheap.
Read some history books or interviews with people that where present at the time. Facts instead of thoughts influenced by your hate for a company.
Yeah I guess that didn't work for IBM, HP, Dell, Sony, Acer, Asus, Samsung and hundreds of other computer OEMs after Apple released their first PC back in the 70's.
The tablet world is relatively young and there is no sign whatsoever that people are bored by iOS or Android. You are comparing the situation over decades. It is iOS and in lesser extend Android that get's all the love from developers, I don't really hear a lot of enthusiasm for Windows RT. I develop apps and I don't care, let alone that my clients care. And apps is what can make and break a platform. It is also a lot easier to shell out 99$ for developer license and that for a platform that has proven itself, then something that is very questionable to say the least.
The only people I do know that are enthusiastic about Microsoft tablets offering are the typical Microsoft people. The kind that get their trousers wet when they hear things like "exchange", "sharepoint","office",... . Those guys that have such a tremendous thrilling life that girls fall on their feet when they spread their theory about how integration with exchange will make Microsoft conquer the tablet space. Or my favorite "it comes with office", because that is really a fun factor... .
The only enthusiastic things I hear about those tablets are about the integration with current Microsoft software and that for 99% in the work space environment. And while Apple does have an enterprise program (which is btw not that strict), I think it is safe to say that most of their tablets are sold to consumers.
That group of people where Microsoft isn't a strong brand or where consumers have a lot of confidence in. I once had a friend who tried to argue that because most people used windows on their pc, it is a "strong" and "popular" brand. The difference is that for PC (especially if you like gaming) you don't have a lot of choice, in tablet space it is a complete other story.
I'm even sure that this was a wake up call for Microsoft and is the reason why they try to shove down "Metro" and their "unified" vision down our throat. That in the hope that familiarity will influence the choice people make when buying a new tablet. I know a lot of people who replaced their PC with a tablet or are using the PC a lot less since they have a tablet. I think for the general population that does some surfing, e-mailing and simple games a tablet can be good enough. And that is a big threat for Microsoft when the dominant tablets don't have a Microsoft operating system on board.
For the more boring environments like most businesses they have a change, in consumer space I don't see it happening. I know it is popular to predict doom and gloom, but if you think about it Microsoft is facing the biggest threat it has in years or even decades.
I have bought some eBooks (usability bundle) by Smashing Magazinethat also are available on the Apple iBookstore and Amazon (and other competitors) have been mentioned multiple times in those books.
I'm beginning to question that there is much more to this story and it has been spin doctored to create some free extra publicity by riding on the iHate wave.
Doesn't surprise me one bit. Here in Belgium you have Sabam which also collects money from different sources but "fails" to get the money to the artist. If I remember correctly last year artists where waiting for about 200 million of euro's and that in Belgium alone. You know how much interests they get on such sums ? And those interests don't get into the pockets of the artists.
They are also masters of getting money out of peoples pocket. When a slick Sabam inspector arrives, you know it will cost you money and they go through some stupid lengths to justify the "extra's" you need to pay.
A flemish satirical program Basta! went even that far to organize a concert with a jar of vegatables (from the brand Suzy Wan), a mixer from Kenwood and another thing that I can't recall. And Sabam slapped them with an invoice for those "artists". So they went with the jar of vegetables and the mixer to the Sabam HQ so the "artists" could sign up to get their money.
Sabam was not amused en when the Basta! guys where planning to give concert with those 'artists', they called the police.
Sabam was even under investigation that they falsified the accounts so they could put money away to bribe officials. But even after all the shenanigans those organisation can still operate. And it isn't that the general public doesn't hate them, they loathe them with a passion.
Pfff there is one snag in your conspiracy theory. Samsung is a conglomeration that exists out of different individual entities that mostly operate in-depended and has its own goals.
There is a big chance that the division that license that IP to develop chips is the same division that also provide Apple with electronics. It isn't because the "mobile" devision is in conflict with Apple, that the rest of the divisions are at war.
In my opinion it is an extremely simplified view if you see those companies as a whole.
The problem is that people aren't aware that the discussions isn't about rectangles or even round corners. It is just a cheap trick to make ridicule about a "contender" or something/somebody that we hate, just to give the impression that they are the weaker party.
The problem is that those lawsuits aren't about rectangles or corners and that it is a bit more detailed then that and also much broader.
Really in all honestly I can't really look at the total package of Samsung tablet offering without having the feeling that they clearly looked for inspiration to some of Apple offerings. You can debate all day long about how stupid is that companies can "patent" designs, but you really must be blind what the source of inspiration was for some things. Look at Samsung Kies for example.
If you take some steps backs and forget about the rectangle stuff and see it in more detail and especially as whole package, the fact that Google warned Samsung that it was to similar may be not that stupid after all.
Then again this is slashdot an this may be the same like "cursing in a church" but hey... .
Not delivering what the market demands doesn't really help. I have been a Nokia user for whole my life and as they went the WP route I bought my non Nokia Android phone as they can't deliver what I (as a customer) wants.
So the question would it save them ? I don't know. But I'm sure the odds would be bigger.
I'm beginning to think M$ management culture is infectious
Then it shouldn't surprise you which history Elop has. It seems he was a good MS soldier then.
To be honest the moves he did seems very incomprehensible and just plain weird. In that sense I'm asking myself how long it will take for a group investors to sue him or the Nokia board for the painfully wrong decisions that they have made. Every fool knew that there was (and imho won't be) a lot of demand for Windows Phones.
I know that in Europe we don't have the "sue over everything" attitude, but I know some European cases where unhappy shareholders went to court to sue ceo's (and their boards) about their part in the demise of a company. I can't help to think that the general Nokia shareholder isn't that happy with Elop's doing.
If it comes to the situation that Nokia loses a lof of its value so that Microsoft can buy them for cheap, I really hope the European commission files an investigation of the role of Elop and Microsoft. Because man this whole Nokia ordeal really stinks.
If I'm not mistaken QuartzGL (available since 10.5) has 2D acceleration support for applications that support it.
I must say that between my Windows machine (which is the more powerful one) and my Macbook pro. Media related tasks are always (or "feel") faster on my Macbook Pro. If I see how fluent I can edit movies or preview my edits then it is a whole other experience then on windows.
It still amazes me that I can see certain things in realtime on my macbook while on my window pc I mostly need to "render" a preview. But I'm aware that it isn't magically fairy dust that makes this mac more faster but it is mainly the graphics core which is very good. People can joke about this changes in Windows but I genuinely think it can and will have a positive impact.
He is right in the sense that more "technical" people have other needs or mindset then the general public. There is a whole book about this particularly stuff "The inmates are running the asylum".
Non technical people don't care about rooting, dual core, flash, "freedom",... They just want to have a fun and hassle free experience... . And to some dismay vertical or even tight integration or control can be a path to a fun and hassle free experience.
It always amuse me seeing how much iPod killers or iPad killers have been announced in the years and the ground for that was that those products where more open, you could root ,... . 99% pure technical arguments. Those devices are still around and making Apple record profits. Don't let me repeat the classic "Less space then a nomad...". This is a classic example of a nerd/technical person that doesn't know the difference between his mindset and that from the general public.
We are *not* the general public and while we love those things or are sometimes obsessed by the inner workings, most normal users don't care about those things.
I'm not 100% following everything what he said in that article, but the "nerd" argument really does make sense a lot.
The only "social" part is - by reading the article - that people are able to share settings.
The problem is that this summary is written by an idiot it seems - is this the infamous timothy which I seems some comments of now an then ? - and has nothing really to do with Google or even a social network in the typical sense when we speak about "social networks".
The person written this summary has really mental problems as it seems he wants to abuse people with hearing disabilities to spread FUD about a scenario which really don't make any sense if I read the article. I don't even know what is has to do with subtitles on youtube.
Maybe I'm bad at math but the farnell quote for me was +/- 45 euro. The gooseberry would be +/- 55 euro's. How is this 3 times the price ?
Talking about Apple and oranges why do people always compare with the cheaper (not existing) model ? It's an intellectual dishonest comparison especially if (some) in the same sentence bitch of the lack of Ethernet port.
no GPIO headers
Yeah great for the 10 people who do hardware design with those things. And then when you want to interface with the outside world I rather have a board that teams up with an arduino. If I remember the first quotes of the gertboard it will even be cheaper and there are tons of documentation already out there. No need to invent the wheel twice.
no expansion for the RasPI Cam and Display
Yeah because the RasPI cam is the only camera that is available. And display ? The things has a standard LVDS header so you can pick up one of the hundreds (cheaps) displays and connect it with ease. How are those LVDS boards coming which have been discussed in the past on the RPI forum ?
Oh, and it runs Android
Every A10 device out there is capable of booting Linux on a external SD out of the box... . So no it doesn't run Android. It runs Android AND linux.
For shame/., for shame.
You aren't an employee of the RPI foundation with any chance ? You guys have the tendency to have very long toes. The funny and remarkable thing is that the RPI needed to spark a whole new interest in cheap computing devices but anytime somebody talks about an alternative or an alternative comes to the market, they get it arms... .
People remembering things like the Sony rootkits is a GOOD THING
But it is strange when Sony Ericsson helps out custom rom builders for Android you get the meme "yeah but this is a joint venture, this isn't Sony", but when another joint venture Sony-BMG does install a rootkit it is Sony.
So I find it very hard to follow that logic (although this is slashdot after all) or it maybe that the world isn't that black and white as some like to make it.
The funny thing is that I have seen some of the RPI foundation bitching about Slashdot while the latter for months has been advertising and showing propaganda for the rpi like there is no tommorow.
This is rally a non article as it "could" be used in space there is not even something concrete. The continous rpi articles are really begin to get on my nerves.
The MS deal for me was the reason that my current phone is a non Nokia phone where all my previous phones has been Nokia devices.
I was always very happy of the quality of my Nokia phones but if Nokia fails to deliver what I want as a customer then I'm forced to say goodbye and pick a brand that wants to sell what I ask for.
I'm not a MS hater but I just don't care for Windows Phones. For me Nokia went from my first consideration when buying a new phone, but now they aren't even on my list anymore.
The funny thing is that the low tax rates for some is the reason why Ireland had a deficit crisis.
And ironically it is then those countries that they are trying to undercut that needs to bail them out.
The problem with a lot of corporations is that they are narrow minded. They want to have a healthy and educated workforce. Companies like Rovio have benefit by being situated in a country where (I presume is like the average European country) where good education and healthcare is quite accessible. And the fact that is very accessible and like in this country is not because those things are heavily privatized.

The person written this summary has really mental problems as it seems he wants to abuse people with hearing disabilities to spread FUD about a scenario which really don't make any sense if I read the article. I don't even know what is has to do with subtitles on youtube.
Boy you must have a surprisingly thrilling life if you are gonna try to nitpick over this. And even then you are partly incorrect.
+/- also comes from the latin plus-minus which means "more or less"... . Look it up.
nearly 3 times the price
/., for shame.
For shame
