My friend works at tesco at the electronics section most of the time. I was there looking for headphones and this woman came up to him and asked him what the difference between a netbook and laptop is. He told her it was a computer mostly designed to browse the internet. After the explanation she thought it could only surf the internet and do nothing else.
Most of the time I prefer windows due to it actually working on my system without tampering ( I would actually consider linux for my main os if the sound/ video worked properly). Does speed really matter when it runs like a cheetah on steroids compared to other operating systems on the same hardware? I don't know about other users but this is from the perspective of someone with an average computer and basic-to-intermediate linux knowledge.
That people even picked this crap up for a serious discussion. The person that thought this up is a moron. I may sound negative but you have to consider that this is coming from someone who just finished school and is going on to university. I for one don't see this working unless the child is a prodigy who is actually being held back by the schooling system. This was the case with Einstein contrary to what many people believe (he never failed at school and actually told his parents he felt that school was holding him back and asked his parents to buy him advanced textbooks so he could teach himself). For this to work, the child needs to be inquisitive and I doubt that any 12-15 year old is gonna ask why mirrors reflect light and what speed does light travel at. Hell, I doubt any kid would know that things are made up of atoms unless they were specifically told so. Also, why the hell would any child actually want to learn maths unless they were forced to do so and told that it was an essential skill?
Why does everyone miss the fact that schools aren't the only ones to blame if a child is not performing at the level expected of him/her. Some people aren't academically inclined so it doesn't matter what environment they are in.
I read this a while ago and also found it on wikipedia. It was said by Jean-Paul Gaster who happens to be the drummer for the band Clutch.
"As a musician, I think it is irrelevant to me. It exists and it is out there and no matter what I try and do about it, it will always be there. I don't mind kids trading tapes, that's totally cool. Videos are cool too. They only add to the live show. A kid might show that to some of their friends and they might think that we are cool and might come out and see us next time.
The reality is that an artist has to have a record go gold, before they are even going to see a dime. Bands put out 3 or 4 records on a label and never see a dime from record sales. So, it is not like people who are downloading would be putting a dollar in my pocket if they would have bought the record. The industry is set up so that the record company will immediately get paid from record sales. So...download all you want!!!
I think that the internet has changed the record industry and will continue to do so. The record labels will find some way to make money. I think that the artists main concern is to concentrate on their live performance and be the best artist that they can".
I don't know how much of this actual fact but this is coming from someone who has been making music for a very long time and is in a relatively well known band. So basically this will most likely come to pass considering all the lobbying from the music and film industry. Personally it does not affect me since I don't download music or films illegally (used to a few years back) but what does concern me is the privacy issues. I don't want someone keeping track of all my internet activity because I doubt that only illegal downloaders would be monitored.
I really don't have a problem with DLC....most of the time. For burnout paradise the developers gave us quite a lot of DLC for free. It was only recently that they started charging for it. Things like big surf island are worth the money. You can see that it was made after listening to what people would actually want in a DLC. It really pisses me off though when DLC adds a "feature" to the game that to be honest should have been present from the start. Its almost like as if that the feature had already been present on the disk but you had to pay extra to unlock it.
Good riddance I say. Netbook shouldn't be larger than 10 inches. I would expect a lot more from a 12 inch laptop like the hp dv2 laptops. I wonder when this race to the bottom is gonna level out. Hopefully soon considering theres a netbook offering from every manufacturer. I would encourage this if it wasn't for the fact that almost every single netbook is exactly the same when it comes to the actual computing. I'm all for those ARM processor based ones though. A 7-10 inch version with 720p video and full flash support would be awesome. Hopefully tegra delivers on its promise.
This is slashdot, any issue involving microsoft is automatically their fault. Why RTFA when microsoft is to blame for everything that is wrong with the world.
I got my dell about 8 months back. The sound didn't work at first and i went to the bios and saw some option that allows for the laptop to be tracked. I guess this is it. Is the laptop still vulnerable even if this feature is turned off? Mine came with it turned off as default. Maybe you gotta pay extra for it, i dunno.
can i get porn channels in 3d? If not then sky 3d can suck it..... Actually hold on a second, do i really want a ginormous phallus sticking out of my tv? so no....i guess 3d porn is not that great an idea.
I highly doubt that they can pull off what has been mentioned above. Firstly, this kills off the used games market ( well...as long as you can rent games digitally it might not matter). I agree that releasing a more powerful console is not the answer. Personally, I would take the ps3 over the 360 any day. WAIT.......no fanboy comments yet. This is merely due to it serving my needs better. Lets look at the 360 first...it is a great console and the online aspect of it is awesome and is something that the ps3 can't even compare to. Lets counter this by making a note of all the foul-mouthed kids on xbox live with headsets. The ps3 doesn't have this problem as nobody ever has a headset and the online aspect for most games is tedious for the most part(except for burnout paradise). Also, the games on the ps3 appeal to me a lot more than those on the 360. The 360 does have great games but I have yet to play anything as compelling as uncharted. The sole reason I got a ps3 was because I wanted to play metal gear solid 4 and god of war 3 and thought that it would also serve as a blue-ray player. In the 16 months that I have owned the ps3 I have only bought 3 games (uncharted,MGS4, burnout). The rest just don't seem worth the money. This year and the next seems to be different as i see a few games that interest me (brutal legend, GOW 3,darksiders,fat princess, uncharted 2) People may argue that there are games like halo 3, gears of war, killzone 2, GTA IV etc but frankly I see nothing of interest in those games. Those are just generic games with violence as a hook. Now, lets look at the most underpowered of all those consoles: the DS. Every single year since 2005 I have found that the game I enjoyed the most each year has been on this handheld. Frankly, to me this is the best console ever made. Its portable and with a great battery life so whats not to like? Granted that 99% of the games released on the ds is pure unadulterated garbage....the remaining 1% makes all the difference and that is saying something.
Ok.......am I the only one who half-read the title as I scrolled down really fast and just imagined something quite different. I thought some hacker called Zer01 got stripped by his/her parent. Then I read the title properly.
Oh yeah, to still be on topic......bad Zer01, very bad Zer01.
Seriously, considering how many kids watch that show if kids were given this operating system I doubt they would go back to windows. It will finally be the year of the linux desktop and all the fanboys can finally stop with all the speculation.
First thing to test? Pretty obvious......porn!!!!!!!
Son of a bitch.......it just struck me just now but why hasn't anyone made 3d porn yet? Or am I missing something and its already been done?
I highly doubt that the success of linux/OS X/ ChromeOS is gonna kill microsoft. Don't get me wrong I'm not a big fan of microsoft. The problem with vista is that it sucked when it launched mainly due to microsoft setting the minimum requirements to run vista inaccurately. People bitched and moaned when it launched. People still complain about vista (and there still is a lot to complain about) but 99% of these people who complain don't even know that there are more than 2 "computers" macs or pc. Simply put, these people don't actually know what is wrong with vista its just that they hear all the experts say it sucks and assume those experts must be right. The experts are right but they aren't even talking about issues that affects the average user for the most part. And how is it logical to blame vista for your own stupidity when you install shit from warez sites. I hate vista but its kinda ironic to hate it when it gets the job done for me when linux struggles for the most basic of tasks (sounds issues much?....ati card driver issues with comiz while watching videos...and the list goes on). Linux doesn't do the one thing I want the computer to be able to do perfectly (media playback without a hitch), for everything else it has got all my needs covered way better than windows ever can and not having to deal a bunch of programs just to make sure the computer keeps running as it should is a blessing. But until the day I can play back videos painlessly on linux I'm gonna stick to vista or windows 7.
The chrome OS is all well and good but I'm not even gonna bother with it unless there is an easy way to get playback for all media formats. Since its a product from google that is targeting the mainstream I doubt they are gonna leave the codecs in the repository.. Hopefully it comes with media playback capability as standard. This probably will be a very crucial factor in determining if users stick with it or not.
and I'm not alone on this one. Developers spend way too much time making the game look pretty these days. I doubt anyone cares how good a building looks if that building happens to be a place where a massive fight takes place. The thing is, developers probably spend months on making it as shiny as possible but most gamers don't even notice it. Game reviewers are the only people who really seem to care what the game looks like. For example, uncharted on the ps3 is my favourite game on the console. The graphics on that game are awesome. I was so drawn into the game that that I thought that this was how it would feel if Indiana Jones was a badass. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if the graphics weren't as good as they were. Then again, I don't really care for graphics for the most part seeing as I do most of my gaming on the ds. When gameplay is good the graphics are secondary. I'm probably gonna get flamed for this but I'm gonna say it anyway. Killzone 2, Halo 3, Gears of War had good graphics but in my opinion the gameplay was just dull and I'm really surprised to see why people seem to almost revere these games. Call of Duty 4 was better than these games but nothing revolutionary. I guess I just don't find games to be much fun when all it entails is going from point A to point B while killing things in a graphic manner ( can be entertaining sometimes) Let's stop here before I can get started on all the "dark/mature/gritty" games rant.
We have much more pressing concerns. I watched this on BBC just an hour ago. Screw sperm donors....they are gonna make their own sperm (Image of a DIY sperm in a petri dish packaged like a children's chemistry set comes to mind). Call me crazy but from tomorrow onwards I'm gonna suck up to all my female friends and be extra nice to my girlfriend so that they will find me useful as far into the future as possible.
The first time i saw natal i was intrigued. It was only after a few hours that it suddenly hit me; son of a bitch.........that things just an advanced version of the sony eye-toy. The eye-toy sucks on the ps2/ps3. Granted, this is a lot more advanced than that but I doubt I would ever buy it. I would try it out for a few hours and then be done with it. Who knows...there might actually be a game that makes this worth it ( I would need to buy a 360 first though).
When the wii came out I was one of the people that rushed out to buy one. Thank god they sold out before i could buy one. One of my friends got one and I had a go on his wii. The wii sports thing was entertaining for about 2 hours then the whole motion control thing just lost its novelty. Also, the zelda game that launched with the wii was a lot more fun without motion controls. After that, there have only be 3 more games since its launch that have caused me to almost impulse buy a wii ( no more heroes, super mario galaxy and super smash bros). I just played 2 of those at my friends house and realised that one game is not enough to justify buying a console.
Last year i bought a ps3. I just wanted to play MGS4 (good game but the cutscenes could have been shorter) and burnout. No way in hell was i gonna spend £300 on a stupid games console so i got my brother and parents to put in £100 each. My brother wanted one anyway and I convinced my parents that it would go well with the new 1080p hd tv in the living room. They weren't convinced but gave me the money anyway(my dad's exact words were.....I don't care for blueray because I am not particularly interested in seeing someone's stubble a bit more clearly in a film). Since then, I have spent less than 75 hours on the ps3 in total over a period of 11 months. Lets not forget sony's own motion control gimmick. This one seems the most viable for hardcore games but I'm gonna have to see actual games before I buy one. Also, since the ps3 controller already has motion controls, couldn't they just make that better instead of a whole new controller?
For me, the only new gameplay gimmick that has actually worked and added to gameplay is the touchscreen. I love my ds. About 95% of its games library is utter crap but the 5% that remain make it all worthwhile. Also, its a lot more affordable and portable. These days I don't really have much free time which has resulted in me developing a short attention span when it comes to games and movies. If it doesn't capture my attention within 15-30 minutes I'm done with it. I don't care how good it gets after 4 hours, I simply refuse to waste my time doing something I don't enjoy just to get to the good part. If microsoft, sony and nintendo think that I will deal with flailing my arms like a moron as well as tedious gameplay then I got 2 words: bite me.
I'm all for innovation but all i can see right now is gimmicks that cater to the casual market. I hope to be proven wrong when these gimmicks finally launch.
wow...i was not aware that upto 24.9 bmi meant normal weight. Im 22.3 and 12.4% body fat and i think i could do with losing 2-3 kilos so i dunno how it works out. I don't trust the BMI thing cuz its too inaccurate. One of my friends is tall and very muscular. Due to this his BMI works out to be 31 which would mean that he is obese. BMI really can't be used cuz it does not account for the percentage of fat.
I'm sorry, but am I the only one that sees this as an oxymoron(for the most part)? Its the internet. Like its been mentioned in the comments above, why can't both solutions exist? I for one would use google overr facebook 100% of the time if i needed anything academic. I have many friends, out of them about 3 would actually know anything if i asked them to help me (for example, with a graph involving polar coordinates). Hell, 80% of my friends think that graphs can only ever be a straight line.
now all they need to figure out is how to show the crashes that occur when you crash the bikes ingame and still keep the rating it currently has. C'mon people i wanna see the bikes crash. This is burnout and the bikes are pretty redundant without the crash element.
Nah.....thats too old. Games need to be edgy these days. You know...so all the youth actually buy it. I suggest a sandbox game where you play as a 15 year old. The game will involve binge drinking, turf wars with other local gangs (all made up of 11-19 year olds). Then you just gotta add chavs and its done. Almost forgot...the side quests will involve "happy slapping". you regain health by eating British food such as curry and kebabs.

if this caused people to spontaneously combust. Yeah.....wifi = the new death-ray. Then it would finally make sense for me to get a n-draft router.

Europeans (except for the UK) write a decimal as a comma ","
now all they need to figure out is how to show the crashes that occur when you crash the bikes ingame and still keep the rating it currently has.
