Uhh, yeah...ever heard of warez? All of the script kiddies have, and since crackers are genrerally immoral jackasses they will have no problem stealing SMS.
If you look at the report you will see that asian minorities have the greatest percentage of net users at ALL income levels.
why is this? Asian cultures are generally VERY open to technology, thus they will adopt the newest stuff much more quickly than anyone else. I really haven't much experience in black and hispanic cultures, are they more technophobic than white and asian? Is this necesarrily a bad thing?
Obviously Loki can't include the win9x binary. But they are kind of stuck, many people won't buy this because the Linux support for 3D hardware is still fairly weak. so Loki is a bit screwed by not being able to sell to all of their potential customers. Wether Loki will be able to survive because of this is something which we will have to wait and see. My money is not with Loki unfortunately, they are in a tough spot, all of the popular games these days are requiring 3D video hardware. Your options with Linux is really only 3Dfx, TnT and Matrox are still too immature to bother with if you are just playing games. You just cut off a huge part of your market right there. Maybe XFree 4.0 will fix this, maybe not, we will see.
Of course even if it does fix this, will Loki be in a good position? I still wonder, most games are written using D3D, are there any tools for easy conversion of D3D to OpenGL? Not that I know of. What about sound? How are they going to translate 3D sound into Linux? Most likely by dropping it. Like it or not game companies have adopted the MS API's for creating games. Someone needs to port these over or somehow translate these to comparable Linux APIs.
I will most likely buy the Win9x version of Myth2 eventually. So that is one less customer for them.
I would really like to get both the win9x and Linux versions for one price. Given the choice I am afraid that I am probably going to be buying the Win9x version. My Riva TnT and SBLive! has much better support there. This may change in a few months, but I want to play the game now, not in a few months.
I much prefer the Quake/Quake2 model where free binaries are released for Linux, using the platform independant data files installed previously. This way we have the choice.
I am not bitching about free games, I am fine with spending $50 on a game I enjoy (though I usually wait a month or so till it goes on sale, I am cheap).
I will happily pay Loki an extra $10 if they will supply the Win9x binaries with their distribution.
Until the state of Linux 3D/sound improves I won't be buying any Linux exclusive games.
Of course if Loki already supplies the Win9x binaries, let me know and I will go out and buy it as soon as it comes out.
No, no. Read the article refered to in the story it is very good. These are special tanks: "With one exception, that is: Linux, which is right next door, and which is not a business at all. It's a bunch of RVs, yurts, tepees, and geodesic domes set up in a field and organized by consensus. The people who live there are making tanks. These are not old-fashioned, cast-iron Soviet tanks; these are more like the M1 tanks of the U.S. Army, made of space-age materials and jammed with sophisticated technology from one end to the other. But they are better than Army tanks. They've been modified in such a way that they never, ever break down, are light and maneuverable enough to use on ordinary streets, and use no more fuel than a subcompact car. These tanks are being cranked out, on the spot, at a terrific pace, and a vast number of them are lined up along the edge of the road with keys in the ignition. Anyone who wants can simply climb into one and drive it away for free."
It is very hard to comment on Intel's actions without knowing what VIA's license states. I would assume that they have a license to the P6 bus architecture, in which case what does it matter what speed it runs at? It is still the same bus.
Either way I hope that VIA succeeds in introducing this chipset, competition is good.
While I agree that censorship of US TV is lame (I was in the UK a couple of months ago, way better TV), I am at least glad that US video releases are not censored unlike the UK releases.
The stories of cuts in Region 2 DVD I read about in DVD/Hometheater forums is ridiculous.
I never really considered Star Wars to be science fiction in the first place, it is fantasy. The dumb critics are at fault here, just because it is in space doesn't make it science fiction.
You forgot to mention Blade Runner as good science fiction. I agree that Gattaca is a spectacular movie.
As the earlier writer said, it has had a bad influence. People now go to films and come away mostly remembering if the special effects were good or bad. Clue- there's more to drama than special effects. Good actors can get away with a bare stage.
This is the audience's fault, not the film's. There are PLENTY of good films out there with little to no special effects and excellent acting/story.
First of all, stop comparing the first movie of the prequel trilogy to the entire original trilogy. Compare TPM to ANH, that is most fair.
So...
I really like Obi-Wan, he is actually quite immature in this film, and is showing that maybe he is getting in over his head at the end.
I really like the Queen, she is showing a lot of will and devotion to her people in this film, I wonder how her career is going to pan out because she seems a bit too trusting and naive.
I really like Maul, he is not too deep, but if you actually watch him closely you will see some serious hate for the jedi flowing from him (kudos to the acting for this one), makes me wonder what exactly the Jedi ever did to the Sith to deserve such wrath.
I like Qui-Gon, he shows a bit too much blind faith, a bit of a free spirit jedi, defying the council and what not.
So, what lack of interesting characters are you refering too??
If we compare to ANH lets see:
Luke is a bit of a whanker, fairly anoying, clueless hero type, more like a little kid (very similar to Anakin in TPM). Well, he gets more interesting in the next two movies.
Darth Vader, probably THE most boring character of the whole trilogy, he is just some black suited dude who likes to choke people. Not much of interest there. Things get more interesting when the whole "Luke I am your father" stuff happens.
Leia, snooze, she doesn't even do anything in this movie except get captured and lead the gang into the garbage compactor.
Han is pretty interesting, rogue type, wonder where his loyalties lie, fairly likeable even though he is a bit of an ass at times.
Obi-Wan is interesting, only Jedi in the film, wonder what all of that means.
Chewbacca, uhh, just some hairy ape guy who flys the ship, not much development here.
This is an argument that has been going on for a long time now. "Star Wars and Jaws ruined the movies." The only problem with this is that it doesn't hold any water. If these critics would open there eyes and actually go to a movie once in a while they will see how much better the movies are now than they ever were. I am not talking about the mega blockbusters. Go to the movie section of any decent sized city paper and you will see a slew of independant, foreign, thought provoking, and groundbreaking movies. Of course because of the tremendous volume that is coming out now the volume of crap has risen as well. If these critics want to sit in there black and white sacarine movie worlds they can go right ahead, I will be enjoying some of the best cinema that has come around in years while still enjoying the older classics.
Actually it was Lucas who did the merchandising, he made sure to obtain these rights from Fox because he felt that they would not promote the movie properly and of course he made a fortune because of this. He says this in many interviews.
My memory is a little vague, I was only 4 at the time, but I remember getting certificates for the action figures pretty early on (a couple of months after release?) because they were not ready yet.
Wait, Starship Troopers had a "deep philosophical point about war"? When was this? I must have missed it between the cheesy love triangle, the "dark and mysterious" Doogie Howser, those insanely annoying news bites and that lame ass revelation about the aliens at the end; Ooo, they're afraid...whatever.
To turn it off in gnome go into the control panel and uncheck the sound support. I am not sure, but if your running E you might need to disable sound in that also, open e-conf and uncheck the audio option.
If you can wait a bit longer I would opt for the Matrox G400, probably not as fast as the Voodoo3 is, but Matrox is being very Open about their cards. They have fuly released all their specs for their chips, unlike 3Dfx.
The Matrox G200 is already starting to work, after only about a months worth of work (slower than a Voodoo2, so you might not want to get this one).
Actually they release hotfixes between service packs. Then they roll all the fixes into a new service pack. I am not too sure on how frequently they post these though.
Did any of you even read Carmacks .plan?

Q3T on Mac First
·
· Score: 1
No, that is not what he said.
They are releasing the Mac port first because there is a smaller userbase. This lets them track global bugs easier than a Windows release would. It is easier to go through 1000 bug reports than 100000. They then fix all these bugs and release the windows version.
What good are laws if they are not enforced? Might as well not have them in the first place.
My understanding is if the company does not have a Taiwan copyright then they cannot bring action. Taiwan does not honor other countries copyrights. Possibly it has changed recently? I get most of my info from my Anime hobby. Sonmay pirates all of the Anime audio CDs. They've been doing it for many years now (5+), they have gotten really good at it, everything looks as good as the original for half the price or less. And these are not just CD-R's, real screen printed pressed CDs, with booklets. How can they get away with this? Taiwan doesn't care about copyrights. Pretty ridiculous.
If your country of residence has signed the Berne Convention then you must respect the copyright. France has signed the Berne Convention (it was drafted in Paris I think). I beleive that France would enforce, though I don't know all the details.
Taiwan is one of the major countries that hasn't signed the convention, as a result you can legally buy all kinds of pirated stuff there. Of course the minute you bring it into a Berne Convention country you are breaking the law.
Of course I beleive that parody is somehow acceptable, I am a little fuzzy on this though.
Of course I am not a lawyer, so take this all with a grain of salt.
Well at least the summary, the real thing costs $995. There are some interesting items:
"-based on their functional capabilities as of April 9, 1999."
?? It is from the future?
"Kernel 2.2.5 used by OpenLinux 2.2 should improve it's SMP scalability somewhat."
So they did use Kernel 2.2, but what do they mean by should? We read on and see:
"Little industry-standard or even propretary benchmark evidance has emerged that demonstrates the performance improvements of database or Web server application running on SMP systems under any Linux distribution."
So they didn't actually test this themselves? They go on to show some charts without Linux results, showing instead "No Published Results".
The report does make several very valid points discussed already which will hopefully be addressed in the future.
The best thing said about Linux is System Management. They really like Linuxconf shipped with Redhat, especially the many different interfaces available, "command-line, text menu, X/Motif, and Web-browser." Although, there isn't a Motif interface on Linuxconf is there? I never paid attention. They pan NT here.
They make several valid criticisms, everyone should read the summary.
*Note: any spelling errors in the quotes are my own, I just typed them out, I didn't cut and paste.
The Concorde is a huge economic mess. That is why Boeing never produced their SST, it is not profitable. You blow all your funds on fuel, forcing you to charge a ridiculous amount of money, but then you get no passengers. You get there in a hurry though.
The Concorde is way ahead of its time, an SST won't be feasible until someone invents a better engine.

You can change the layout using chrome.
Also gtk themes work on the Linux version. Of course you may be SOL if you cannot download any software.

Kill esd process for a quick fix.
To turn it off in gnome go into the control panel and uncheck the sound support. I am not sure, but if your running E you might need to disable sound in that also, open e-conf and uncheck the audio option.
This is the same card as Ensoniq AudioPCI, so just follow the instructions for that.
