  1. Re:What the? on Alan Turing Apology Campaign Grows · · Score: 1

    The *States* have the death penalty, not the U.S. government. This is an important distinction because although the U.S. Declaration may have certain rights listed, the States are still free to run their own affairs. This is why for a long time freedom of religion did not exist in states like Virginia, since they were not bound by the U.S. Constitution. It's also why U.S. law no longer includes a death penalty, but places like Texas do.

    As for liberty, there are two ways you can lose it and be in prision. (1) Harm another being, thereby violating his rights, so you lose yours for a temporary amount of time. This is necessary because you certain persons, for whatever reason, must be restrained. As Founder of the Democratic Party Thomas Jefferson remarked, "No man has a right to harm another. And that is all the government should restrain him."

    (2) Sell yourself into servitude. You're allowed to do this because you own your body and can what you please with it.

    It's also worth nothing that societies often make mistakes. Like the Alien & Sedition Acts of the 1790s that prevented free speech (and violated amendment 10). Well it's a shame that happened, but we learned from it, and hopefully it won't happen again. The U.S. has often not lived-up to its ideals, but they are still worth striving for.

    The word "ye" was never used to replace the word "the" or "(thorn)e". Yes I know it's common in tourist traps to see "Ye Old Tavern" but this is just bastardization of the old tongue. Nobody spoke or printed like that in 1500.

    The actual meaning of the word "ye" was you-plural. It's the same as the original Germanic language had primitive forms of "du" and "ihr" for singular and plural "you". It's the loss of the word "ye" that has created slang terms like "youse" or "you-guys" and I think when teachers hear that slang, they should encourage a revival of the original pronoun. It may be archaic but it's better to say "Hey ye, come look at this" rather than "Hey youse..."

    It's also worthy noting that the word "thee" or "thine" is a familiar term used for families. So if you read the King James Bible and it says, "A closer walk with thee God," it's not reverence that is displayed but a familial relationship.

    The verse you cite is an example of (1) not having a dictionary to standardize the language such as "frends", and (2) english people still speaking with an old accent like pronounced "e" in "uncleane", and applying french accents to french words like "enmetie"

    However now that dictionaries exist, and teachers prescribe how words are supposed to be spoken, the language has stabilized.

    Enter Mr. Surgeon to remove part of the mouse's brain. Now the mouse swims in circles until it drowns (or the researcher rescues it). Put the brain-damaged mouse in the mouse-equivalent of Disneyland - lots of wheels and slides and blocks and other stimulative things for about a month. Now drop the mouse in the water, and he swims right to the island. The stimulation caused the brain's cells to grow new connections and restore the memory that had been "lost"

    It appears playing games for humans is equivalent to Mousy Disneyland - it stimulates the brain's cells to grow new connections.

    Your numbers are incorrect and also the timespan is not the same (fall 2001 to present). Plus you have to include the cost of new equipment, because while PCs that originally shipped with XP can still run Win7, the Macs that shipped with 1.1 can not run 1.5 or 1.6 due to minimum *required* processor speeds. Therefore:

    XP -> Vista -> 7 == $120*2 = $240 + $25 1 gig RAM upgrade == about $300
    1.1 -> ... -> 1.6 == $90*5 == $450 + $1500.00 for new Mac == about $2000
