Hmmm. Heard of emoticons? They look like this:) . That partiular one means "smile," as in this is a little joke.
Appeal to authority is not always a logical fallacy. It can also be a valid tool for supporting an argument. Why just see this page for proof.:) If the authority is an actual authority on the topic at hand, then it increases the power of the argument. Are you suggesting that Dijkstra isn't an authority in CS? Good luck arguing that one.:)
If computer science isn't about computers, what is it about?
"Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes"
-- Edsger Dijkstra quotes (Dutch computer Scientist. Turing Award in 1972. 1930-2002)
Sorry, you're arguing against Dijkstra: you lose.:)
Yes, that make sense. So you query slashdolt.ogr and get back an ip which points to opendns.org/some_customized_web_page. So this will break any non-web-based query. So if you use this service and ssh into slashdolt.ogr, it will not fail correctly, but fail to fail correctly. Annoying.
That part was definitely written incorrectly, but we all know what he meant (I hope).
No, look at the site. It claims to respond to failed DNS lookups with advertising and customized 404 messages. Look at the screen shot here. It includes a plug for OpenDNS. I don't know how a DNS lookup is translated to an http response, but I net it's pretty ugly.
From the FAQ:
How does OpenDNS make money?
OpenDNS makes money by offering clearly labeled advertisements alongside search results on error pages. OpenDNS will provide additional services on top of its enhanced DNS service.
...without even thinking about it, my mouth stops and I'm 100% tuned into the road
I call BS. How do you know there were not other times when you were oblivious to danger? You'd be oblivious so you would not even be aware that there was danger.
Why can't it be both? Private research is not dependent on gov't funding. The argument that, "well now the gov't isn't doing research so private companies can" assumes a finite amount of research can be done. This is simply not the case.
Your assumption that the program is purely to counter a possible bias may be incorrect. They Gnome people may believe, as I do, that a more diverse group of engineers simply produce a better design/product. Competition among differing points of view cause more ideas to be thought of and more (bad) ideas to be shot down. Do women have an inherent point of view that is different than men? I don't know, but it seems a good idea to encourage diverisity anyway.
While I agree with your sentiment, the founding fathers were human and fallible. John Adams signed into law the Alien and Sedition Acts which made it illegal to write or say bad things about the government. They made mistakes and did things which would seem to us today to be unconscionable (owning slaves comes to mind). I don't think they would see us as cowards, so much as simply overreacting to a threat. The beauty of the system they designed is its flexiblity and ability to swing back and forth between the extremes without staying on any side too long, to always hover roughly around the best approach to solve the problems at hand. That being said I think Bush is pushing it too far - and I think we will see the system push back pretty strongly soon. The midterm elections should be pretty punishing for the Republicans.
Meh. My 2 cents.
I betcha the production costs of Family Guy are much less than Firefly though. So bringing Family Guy back was less of a gamble than bringing Firefly back would be.
If this is true, it only shows how corrupt our laws have become. No serious person could think that Jefferson, Franklin and the other Constitution authors would ever think it's OK for a president to do something like this.
Well John Adams outlawed criticism of the gov't - and he was one of the founding fathers:
"The Sedition Act posed the biggest challenge to civil liberties, undermining the core of the First Amendment protections of free speech and press. It prohibited spoken or written criticism of the government, the Congress, or the President."
The founding fathers aren't that high and mighty either. I'm just glad they set up a system where (evenutally) bad politians get what's coming to them. At least the system is transparent enough that we see these things and talk about them.
Cite? Sounds like an urban legend to me...
What the hell is it doing on slashdot?!?
Holy crap! You got me there. I surrender. :P
I 3 calculus! Yay calculus!

(Note the smiley). :) Heh.
... but does it run linux?

Holy crap! Literally exploded? How many died? Was it a car bomb?

Awesome. This'll give new meaning to BSOD when the robots begin the inevitable rampage. Blue Scream of Death anyone?
...which will cause gridlock.

The example in the write up is not a catch 22. A catch 22 requires two things be done, each one before the other, thus neither can be done.
Ah - so you're the other one, at last we meet.
I betcha the production costs of Family Guy are much less than Firefly though. So bringing Family Guy back was less of a gamble than bringing Firefly back would be.
Do you have a cite for this?
What do ducks have to do with this?

Seriously - do the editors get paid to post these stories?
That's nothing. I can compile a kernel anywhere.
OMG! George Lucas is raping my childhood!
