  1. Re:Hire bad programmers with good social skills on Ask Slashdot: How Best To Teach Programming To Salespeople? · · Score: 1

True. As a programmer I can say, PLEASE keep salesmen off my back. They are clueless idiots who waste my time. Please DO give me a programmer who can explain me why the product is great and show it. If he doesn't even wear a suit it is only a pro. I'm allergic to suits.

  2. Yeah right on IT Desktop Support To Be Wiped Out Thanks To Cloud Computing · · Score: 2

Sounds like wishful thinking to me. I don't believe in the cloud, and I think many will follow when the first mayor cloud-outage or data breach has occurred. Also, staying connected to the cloud is a challenge itself, which will still require a lot of jobs. We recently had a three day down-time in our organisation, which effectively made them three lost days. Connection issues to the internet are a daily thing, but since we don't use the cloud that only delays my Slashdot posts...

  3. XP is here to stay on End of Windows XP Support Era Signals Beginning of Security Nightmare · · Score: 2

For me it runs fine on my main system. Windows is nothing more to me than a way to start the applications I need. So Microsoft now forces me to pay E 90,- just so I can safely click my apps again ?

I also run it on a PIII 700 at home, which I use to program microcontrollers and play music for my Saxophone lessons. It is doing that job just fine and has a few ISA cards to support the programming. Wouldn't be surprised if Windows 7 refuses to install on that poor old machine. So now what ? Buy a new machine ? With ISA, Serial port and parallel port support ?

  4. Not surprising... on Hybrid Car Owners Not Likely To Buy Another Hybrid · · Score: 1

One colleague drives a Toyota Prius, another a Volvo C70 Diesel. The Volvo has a better MPG than the Prius, and though the owner of the Volvo is not a pedal to the metal-type, he is anything but a relaxed driver. The Prius owner is one of those guys who drives dangerously slow because the CVT makes sure the engine starts whining as soon as you only look at the throttle. I'd love to drive electric, but hybrid ? No thanks.

  5. what's the definition of good ? on Bing Now Nearly As Good As Google — Says Microsoft · · Score: 1

My definition is that when I enter some search results, the first three hits listed make sense. As someone who regulartly touches PCs of other people -people clueless of what the quick search bar in the top of their browser is using as engine- I can say that for me the main way to distinguish between Bing and Google is by looking at the search results: With Google I typiclaly find what I look for dead on, while Bing manages to confuse me and make me look again whether I typed the correct keywords. I must admit, they are slightly improving, but reputation comes by foot and leaves by horse, as we say in the Nethelands...

In the researcher world, it's all about publishing, publishing, publishing. 90% of the papers is crap, and at leat 75% of the conferences is crap. People fake results, publish even before they have the actual results, only to get noticed. I'm in the middle of it, and I sometimes feel so ashamed by the quality of what I'm forced to publish that I feel like stepping out.

  8. Re:Money on What's Keeping You On XP? · · Score: 1

Well, I don't want to call my PC cheap, it was quite top of the line 4 years ago. But I got myself a valid XP license and it just works fine. So now I should spend a lot of bucks to buy a Windows Vista 2.0 (or Windows 7, what's it called these days ?) license just because Mr. Ballmer wants me to ? For me, the operating system is not much more than the environment which allows me to start programs and click a few files.

Oh, and chances are my printer won't work anymore in Windows 7. Yes it is old, but it prints just fine.

And my old legal office suit which prints plain and simple letters just as beautiful and doesn't have the annoying Office 2010 ribbon (I liked the 2007 one!) has issues in Windows 7.

I would have to spend 250 euro's to keep Ballmer happy. That's so not going to happen.
