Very, very interesting! Always follow the money.

Although, I may just pick that book up from the library to see how what must be a GREAT editor greps through the scriblings of such a loon and turns it into a book that can actually be published.

    And mod parent up, BTW.

I'm playing planetside right now (Terrans) and its a decent enough FPS. All I can say is get into a good outfit (guild) as soon as you can, this makes the game much more fun. What I like most is you have level progression that doesn't really make you stronger, just more flexible. Its usually a fair fight between a level 2 and a level 20. Also, I've been in some really cool 150-200 person battles on quite a few occasions. They have a 30 trial for $10 . http://planetside.station.sony.com/

Horizons has a really good crafting system and one of the best UIs I've seen. It has some major flaws though. Really bad performance on ATI cards and a lack of high level content for example. I hear they are getting better on the content though. It has a 7 day free trial, so if you like crafting or being a dragon give it a go. http://www.istaria.com/

It actually had one of the best user interfaces of any MMORPG I've have seen. It was difficult to use at first, but I thought it was very powerful when I got used to it. But, yes the game did suck pretty bad on all other fronts. The bugs, crappy framerates, lag, lack of content as well as lack of players only got worse after beta.

I've actullay had a helluva good time doing this on the Lineage 2 beta. The game does not show what other players con to you and I use this to hunt PKs. I kept my set of starter armor and weapons and when I'm bored with PvE I put on that stuff and head to the noob areas and start killing; acting like I'm leveling up on wolves or goblins. Without fail some PK runs by and tries to kill me. I usually run away at first, playing the coward, putting on my real armor and weapons as I run. Then I whip around and fire a shot that usually takes out the PK in one shot. I giggle like a little girl after each encounter. Even better, L2 has a system that raises the probability of a player dropping an item on death if they are a PK. So to add insult to injury sometimes they loose the weapon, armor or jewlery they were using at the time.

I make no claims to the veracity of the memo, but seriously, have you ever sent an email to somebody with an MBA? You have to repeat even simple things 10-20 times before they have a chance of comprehending your message. If anything (based on my experience) this email is way too long. Anybody above the level of project manager are too important to read past the first 2 sentences.

The designers of Dark and Light are trying to implement somthing they call Social Experience. While I don't think this is a new concept (A few MUDs tried this, IIRC) it may be one of the first "mainstream" MMO titles to try in a fantasy setting.

The game is in early beta and has some other really cool concepts. Go check it out, the screenshots are awesome and the community so far is friendly and helpful.

Anyway, I've found you simply cannot get 2 good coders by shackling one good and one poor coder together. The bad one generally doesn't learn anything and the good one just gets frustrated and angry.

Pair programming might work if the poor coder had a desire to learn, but it's been my experience that this usually isn't true. Learning to be a good coder does not happen by proximity and osmosis.

I gotta disagree here to a point and say its not so black and white whether or not research can be evil. (/me whips out my trusty Nazi argument card) The nazis performed human experiments on the "unfit" in the 30's and 40's, the nature of which I think most people would hesitate to call barbaric and evil. They ran cold water endurance tests, simulated high altitude asphyxiation(sp?) tests and a injections of poisons and diseases to probe the limits of the human body. After the war the allies found some of this data and now they had a huge ethical delimma. What do you do with data from horrible experiments that have already been performed? Does using the data somehow excuse what the Nazis did? Or perhaps even make you an accomplice to genocide if you do use it? On the other hand this data could help mankind. Did those people now die for no reason if you don't use it? I suppose this is just another reahash of "guns don't kill people" argument, but I watch too much history channel and felt like mentioning Nazis. As a small qualifier: I am no luddite who thinks we ought to ban genetic research, I actually think we should do more. When arguments like this pop up I really wish Mary Shelly had never published.
