You misunderstood what I was talking about. The government wants solutions based on open source technology. This does not necessarily mean that the "application" needs to be open source, although it certainly could be. Open source also doesn't necessarily mean GPL either. You could take an application based on BSD or Apache licensed open source code and create an application for the government that nobody else gets the source to.
For non-military, non-sensitive applications, you could CERTAINLY have a full open-source solution. Remember that government not only includes the DOD, but DHHS, DOE, State, county, city governments, libraries, schools, etc. The full gamut of "government" is massive. To ignore that open source market would be insane.
Despite what you too frequently hear, the navy (and DOD in general) have some Very competent people. Are all of them competent? Of course not, but a lot are. Not everything is done through contractors and support contracts. They have good people on staff, and many of these are quite comfortable with open source software.
Just another data point.... I was in a meeting earlier this week with some Very senior government officials and former officials that are working on a (huge) multi-governmental organization project with world-wide scope. We gave a demo of our solution that obviously blew their socks off. When we mentioned that our entire infrastructure was based on open source software (Linux, apache, perl, etc.) they were Very pleased, mentioning that "We prefer open source solutions" and then asked us to implement a demo of their project on our infrastructure ASAP, and committed to spending seriously large amounts of dollars to do it. BTW, their project which has been ongoing for a couple years now is way behind schedule, and is currently on a totally proprietary (windows based) platform.
The Government wants open source solutions. Companies need to start delivering. Companies that deliver will do very well. This is good for everyone, because improvements made to open source software and returned to the community benefits the world.
FTFAS: Stem cells produced using this procedure, however, can not be use to safely to make genetically matched cells for transplant.
So since this technology can't be used in the way that has the most benefit, it's useful exactly how? Not trying to be argumentative, just curious...
The obvious need is to regrow replacement organs like the heart, kidney, an arm, nerves, 12" pecker, etc. How can this new technology be used if it can't be used for organ replacement?
If the air supply is blocked, you get no combustion once the oxygen is consumed. Gas ovens also take much longer to preheat and heat less consistently. Electric is preferred by chefs which is why high-end ovens are dual-fuel. Grilling is another issue. The new infrared gas burners are Awesome. On the cooktop, nothing but gas for me...
Yes, I'm sure that they won't care that I hate their ads so much that I vowed to never every buy their product. Like Vonage. Some times people do stupid things - like financially supporting a company that annoys them.
I normally skip ads, but occasionally I just forget, and if the ad isn't totally annoying I find myself watching it until my wife reminds me to "bloop bloop bloop" (tivo 30 sec skip hack...)
What will instantly prompt me to pick up the remote and "bloop" is obnoxious ads, such as Vonage woo hoo (fuck you too) and car dealership ads. Why is it that all car dealerships have horrible obnoxious ads? Hell, they are even worse that inane ads for "hot pockets" or tampons...
If we could thumb up or down ads as we watch, maybe we would get better quality ads.
Most movies are filmed on FILM, which is much higher resolution than a normal DVD. Most of the HD movies (especially those broadcast on HD channels) just digitized the film. The fifth generation copy you get in a theater isn't so hot, especially after several weeks of play, but the original content is very good, and much better than 1080p.
The dancing teddy bears killed RotJ. If you delete 90% of the teddy scenes, including the entire party scene at the end, it would become more watchable.
Considering that these same companies will also need to switch to ipv6, it would be in their own best interest to delay the mandated ipv6 move by returning unused IP's. Apple could easily run off a/16 instead of a/8. Maybe they would even create software that works better with NAT if they too used it (iChat anyone?)
And cost more then a high end computer? Thanks but I'll pass on that.
Why should it? Component costs have dropped since the last rev. Isupply says that the cost of an iphone is $300, and these specs are less than an iphone. Throw in profit and the carrier subsidy and we should see $299 price points, which is the same as it is now. IMHO, the iphone is overpriced since there is no carrier subsidy.
I believe you are right for traditional palm devices. MAYBE they will for recent model treos though... The 700p (which I have) has a LOT of issues that have really pissed off treo owners. It has a serious lag, turns non-responsive, has the Worst bluetooth implementation *ever* (flaky to the point of almost being unusable), and a slew of other performance / stability problems. It was a huge step back to the 650. Palm claims that they will release a software upgrade at the end of this month, but unless it fixes all the problems which have been plaguing users for a year, palm will have alienated their user base to the point of suicide. As for the 700w, it's too flaky as well. Users at our company that have them have to hard-reset at LEAST daily, usually more often, and it has a much lower res screen for some bizarre reason.
Palm needs to pull some serious magic out of a hat to stay relevant / viable. Things I'd like to see: Minimum 1G internal flash memory, 256M ram, mini-SD slot, SDIO slot, slide down (or side) keyboard so you can have a larger screen, rotating screen, a camera that doesn't totally suck, a standard mini-usb connector, wifi built-in, faster processor to handle multi-media.
Oh this has nothing to do with music sales and traditional broadcast radio. This is still about internet "radio".
Internet "radio" is going back to congress asking to be treated like a real radio station and get back to a zero royalty rate. The RIAA wants to head this off and say that real radio needs to pay too. It won't work, but they are going to give it a go...
The point of these laptops is that they are portable, durable, and have VERY low power utilization. Children are SUPPOSED to take them home at night. You obviously missed the 60 minutes program on it...
Exactly. OLPC is a very small group of people at the moment, with very little money (despite the corporate sponsorships.) Setting up the supply chain to inventory, sell (accounting / taxes), ship, support, etc to hundreds of thousands / millions of individuals as opposed to a few governments ordering 250K minimum is a huge undertaking. Hell, they won't even start building until they have firm orders for 3 Mil units. My guess is that they will partner with some large company (CDW, Insight, Zones, etc.) to handle the buy-two, receive one program.
And neither was Kerry. Seriously, we need some good people to step forward. All we've had was horrible alternatives. Anyone somewhat reasonable / moderate can't get elected due to the primary system being dominated by polarized groups.
The most effective way is whitelisting... I setup an exim filter that captures outbound addresses and adds them to a whitelist DB. If you send a short email with a single image and are not on the whitelist, you get rejected. Result is zero image spams and no known false positives. This may or may not work for others, but it works for me.
The mortgage interest deduction was intended to promote home ownership by making it cheaper, but for the majority of people (who do not itemize) it makes it more expensive
While I would bet that most people agree that the US tax system is overly complex and unfair, if you don't take advantage of a deduction you qualify for there is nobody to blame but yourself.

Didn't you read the article? You have to buy a new keyboard and buy a new terminal emulator. There are no other choices. Sheesh.
You are right. There is no need for Yes/No on Windows Mobile where the only REAL option is: "Execute text message as code? Yes / Yes"

Oh the nasty noise a crashed or failing Syquest 555 40M removable made... I went through a ton of those (drives and media) in my Amiga A1000 days...
That method would be viable back in the days of 20M drives. Now we have terabyte drives... Good luck finding the evidence in less that 50 years...

A good actor can make or break a film. Johnny Depp in Pirates One... Hayden Christensen as Jack????
All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix)
DMB does a pretty good rendition too.

Since the wealthier people are paying a higher percentage of income in taxes to begin with, it's reasonable to have a larger deduction.
The mortgage interest deduction was intended to promote home ownership by making it cheaper, but for the majority of people (who do not itemize) it makes it more expensive
