Also very good, and very funny, is Alton Brown and his book "I'm just here for the food". I believe Alton was actually interviewed on slashdot at some point, but I can't find the story. He focuses on the science behind cooking, and how the food cooks, rather than just recipes. He also has a show Good Eats on Food Network. I find that he occasionally contradicts himself, but overall is a very good resource, especially since the humor makes his book very easy to read, and his show very easy to watch.

War and the justice system are orthogonal institutions. One has nothing to do with the other.

Maybe not in some countries, but as you may have noticed over the past few years, the legislative branch of the U.S. government has quite a bit to do with war.
No, we should not have been required to unequivocally prove the existence of WMDs. Going to war shouldn't necessarily be held to the same standards - the stakes are a lot higher. But perhaps that means they should correspondingly be held to higher standards. IMHO, If we are going to go to war over something, have our soldiers die over something, have 'acceptable losses' of civilian lives, we ought to have made damn certain that it's true. Not this bait-and-switch of "WMDs!!! *waving hands* but look over here! Saddam was a horrible person!!"

The Vietnam war was a war with a DRAFT. That means that the government could forcibly send you to go fight and die. The Iraq war, while certainly with its faults, is a war being fought by people who signed up knowing the consequences of signing up. Everyone who is there is there because they chose to join an armed service.

Just wait a little while. Guess what's currently sitting in the committee on armed services:

Senate bill S89: A bill to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

    House bill HR163: (same)

Interesting conundrum for W. there, no?

Maybe i'm missing something, but shouldn't those WMDs have been found before dropping a bunch of bombs and killing a bunch of people, rather than after? anyone still remember that 'innocent until proven guilty' thing? it was at least at some point the cornerstone of our justice system?

    interesting conundrum, indeed.

I'm very sorry for your father. Diabetes truly is becoming an epidemic... fortunately, research related to curing both type 1 and 2 have increased accordingly. Hopefully a cure will come soon.

To respond, my experience includes both my type 1 diabetes and my parents' type 2. This, combined with keeping up with various medical journals and current research in the field, makes me knowledgable not only about diabetes in general, but the endocrine system relating to blood glucose levels. A type 1 diabetic is tasked with complete control of their insulin/glucose levels, and develops an intimate understanding of how various foods and activites affect them. I have had meals composed of nothing but fats and proteins; I experimented with the atkins diet (against the recommendation of my endocrinologist) for a few days. The biggest difference I noticed was a high sugar level through the night, due to the delayed effect of fats and proteins on blood glucose levels. I ended up taking insulin injections in the middle of the night to compensate.

One very important note about type 2 diabetes: it is a progressive degenerative disease, and cannot be reversed. It can be controlled, to an extent, through diet, exercise, etc. However, it cannot be cured, and as the disease progresses over time a type 2 diabetic will need to start insulin injections to maintain good health. You and your father's experiences may have given the appearance of "reversing" the diabetes, but essentially the symptoms were only being hidden by tightened glucose control (which the Atkins diet does, to an extent, provide, but not in a healthy manner).

Finally, let me reiterate this very important point, because it is common misinformation that can have a dramatic effect on a diabetic's life: fats and proteins DO have just as much of a cumulative effect on blood sugar levels as carbohydrates. It is merely spread out over more time.

  8. Health information on Slashdot on iTunes 4.5 Authentication Cracked · · Score: 1

I strongly feel this is important... don't get health information from slashdot... Medscape
is a very good source of information which is geared towards a more scientific-oriented crowd than sites such as WebMD. (Although Medscape was recently bought by WebMD, it existed previously as a source of information primarily for health care providers, thus of a more technical nature, and WebMD seems to have left it relatively alone).

  9. Re:Only five million? on iTunes 4.5 Authentication Cracked · · Score: 1

This is exactly why the Atkins diet makes me cringe... I am a (type 1) diabetic, take insulin injections and check my blood glucose levels several times a day. Believe me, fat and protein do raise your blood glucose level. The raise is spread out over more time, but it seems to give a net raise to my glucose levels of about the same as the equivalent weight in sugar or starch.

To address the type 2 diabetes caused by fat consumption, there has been at least one recent study (fueled by the Atkins craze) showing that excessive fat consumption leads to increased free fatty acids in the blood stream, which subsequently does directly affect incidence of type 2 diabetes. There is only to my knowledge one or two studies, so not a great deal of evidence, but that is more due to research into this field being fairly new rather than an abundance of evidence to the contrary.

Type 2 diabetes is still a mysterious beast... although we have a decent understanding of it, it is far from complete. What we do know goes back to a very basic principal: to decrease your blood sugar levels (thus, decreasing risk of type 2 diabetes) you need to reduce caloric intake. Simple as that. A balanced diet is certainly preferable... although I disagree completely with the author's reasoning behind it, the "Zone" diet makes a lot of sense to me in the context of my experience as a type 1 diabetic. Balancing intake of the different types of calories results in far more stable blood glucose levels.

The ISS and Mars have the forest. Hubble needs a tree.

The cost so far for this most recent mars mission is over $800 million. Budgeting through further missions is set to exceed $15 billion. The ISS outdoes even this, with an expected cost of near $30 billion to finish the station, and estimated operating costs of $1.5 billion a year once completed.

Hubble needs about $100 million for a single shuttle launch. $200 million in equipment has already been constructed and is only waiting in a warehouse for a mission.

I don't deny the importance of the ISS and Mars missions. All these projects have significant importance for science, technology, and society as a whole. Hubble is about far more than "getting to see a black hole". We have made dramatic advances in astrophysics with the help of the telescope. We have gained immense insight into the depths of our universe, to an extent that won't be possible again for a very long time.

Taking relative cost of the three projects into account, Hubble is by leaps and bounds the most effective. Do the math. Fixing the hubble will only take 0.2% of the cost of the ISS and Mars missions. Given the advances in science and technology we have extracted from Hubble, the return on this small investment is tremendous.

    That's why I sigh.

"safety concerns" were cited as the cause, but reduced budgeting due to mars' popularity is a far more likely reason. (listen to the audio stream of the program)
