Whenever they get the drivers done (soon i hope), I'll be able to do hardware accelerated X and OpenGl on my cheap ass $40 ATI Rage Pro card. Yeah! at least i didn't hand over $100+ for a fancy Nvidia card that will probably never do either... cheap hardware and Linux, what a combination :)

  4. 3D acceleration for ATI chipsets? on XFree86 4.0 Now Available · · Score: 1

Does anyone know at what stage the support for 3D acceleration on ATI chipsets (specifically Rage PRO) is? I read along time ago that there were projects underway to support ATI chipsets with Mesa and GLX or DRI drivers. So I wonder, does Xfree86 4.0 come with drivers to do 3D acceleration on ATI chipsets? If not, is there somewhere one could get such drivers? Or will they be available anytime soon? thanks

This is bug 18895, which affects list boxes, and may or may not be fixed by beta. Eventually all widgets, including scrollbars will be cross platform and therefor skinnable. Which I think is pretty nice.

At West Virginia University, the internet access is included in our tuition, whether we like it or not. Only recently the University began blocking Napster without any warning or announcement. Also, the web site of the company that provides their access states that it is against the rules to run any Unix computer as a server. They say it is a security risk. They do provide support for setting up several *nix type OSes though. I wonder if they realize what a security risk all those windows computers can be?

Thanks for clarifying the licence thing. I had heard that the QT toolkit had it's own restrictive licence, assumed that KDE had that licence also. Anyways, i did not intend to spread the flame war, i should have posted that comment as a question rather than assuming.

  8. Re:Mozilla as a widget on Gnome Development Roadmap · · Score: 1

Your wish has already been answered. Mozilla is about as modular as it gets. The rendering engine can be made completely seperate from the interface, making it usable in other programs. As it is now everthing in the interface IS skinable. All the buttons, scrollbars, etc., can be changed by their skinning language based on XML, called XUL. So expect to see lots of mozilla skins in the future. The next step after that will probably be alternative interfaces to mozilla, such as a GTK interface, or maybe a more advanced skinable interface, giving you the ability to make skins like those on some of the cooler mp3 players, or maybe something even crazier.

  9. Re:Mozilla + Gnome = rockin' desktop on Gnome Development Roadmap · · Score: 1

Well I think the big difference would be that it would be a component, not running all the time and doing stupid things like IE does in windoze. Rather than using the web browser to do things that don't require a web browser, it could be used when it was needed, and wouldn't be adding unwanted bloat. Micro$oft may have had some good ideas about some things, they just didn't care to implement them right.

  11. Mozilla + Gnome = rockin' desktop on Gnome Development Roadmap · · Score: 2

What I'm looking forward to is seeing how Mozilla will be intergrated into Gnome. I think that eventually the layout engine from Mozilla will be used as a component for Gnome, through Bonobo or some such thing, making possible viewing HTML or XML content in the new file manager, help browser, or any other Gnome application where it would be usefull.

My prediction: Redhat 6.2 with Xfree86 3.3.6, all the current stuff. Then in late summer/ early fall , Redhat 7.0 with Xfree86 4.x, and a 2.4 kernel (I thought the DRI in Xfree86 4.0 needed some special kenel modules anyway). Also should have the upcoming version of Gnome that probably won't make it into 6.2, also expect to see a Redhat branded Mozilla in there. In my opion it is going to rock.

Yes, Realplayer is evil. We all know they spy on their users. Realplayer 7 will probably be closed source. (It would be nice if Redhat could convince them otherwise.) But I'll use it. And I look forward to using it. Because that ancient version of Realplayer never did work right for me under Redhat linux, and I've been feeling left out when ever I come across some music site that uses realplayer. So at least I won't be left out anymore, and I'll still hope for a non-evil open source solution for streaming media.
