I used to work for a company with hundreds of programmers that was very ergo conscious. They would do anything to help the coders work easier.
Desks that would raise to standing height at the flip of a switch, gelpads, Herman Miller chairs, split keyboards, massages, whatever.
I had some pretty bad pain in my hands (still do since I left the company) and they got me a Kineses ergo keyboard. Honestly, within days I was used to the weird layout and my pain was gone. Simply gone.
I don't know why I haven't picked one up since, $300+ isn't too much for better wrist health. It even has foot pedals that can be configured for those keys that cause you to leave the home row, like Esc.
If my company takes off so I'm not living week to week, I'm getting one. For now I must suffer.
Actually if you look at that particular illustration from the prehistoric era closely, you will see that it was not the cigarettes that killed the dinosaurs.
Everyone knows that 3 on a match is bad luck. So obviously once that third dinosaur lit off of the same match, their kind was doomed.
This also sheds new light on the origins of the "3 on a match" saying. Originally attributed to WWI trench wars, it was said that the first was to see them, the second was to aim, and the third on a match was the one to get shot.
The emminent historian Professor Larson shows us otherwise.
Apparently the meteor was aimed at the third dinosaur.
I have to stop now. If I go any further off-topic I'll have to...
In case you missed it, here are the results: Yes 358 / 13% No 2034 / 75% Undecided 84 / 3% Huh? 206 / 7% The poll was "Should Slashdot dump the jerk?" Maybe the poll should be administered again with a less cryptic heading? After all/. usually gets something like 10K votes on a poll. This poll was held in November after only 2 or 3 postings by Katz. I've been stymied on that one for a while myself. Could you PLEASE write up something for it? A HOWTO, a/. feature, an email to me? Telephony doesn't really seem to exist on Linux, but if you've done it... I just hope you weren't exaggerating. --
The last time I went to CrapUSSR I simply wanted to see what their DVD selection was like. I knew they carried DVDs, but I couldn't find them anywhere. I talked to a redshirt and asked where they were. Red-We keep them in back. Me-Well, that's stupid. What titles do you have? R-What do you want? M-I don't know I'd just like to browse. R-Well I can't let you do that. M-Do you have a list of what you have? R-No, but I can look up a title for you. M-There are thousands of titles, you want me to guess what you have? R-If you tell me what you want... M-I want to browse your titles. R-You can't do that. M-And your computers can't display inventory by category? R-I don't know what you mean. If you just tell me what you want... M-A manager. I want a manager. At which point I pulled out 5 100 dollar bills. As the manager came up, I pointed at the money and said "You just lost this money, the idiot here can explain." I grabbed the money and left. I then went to Tower Records to drowm my misery in new music. Lo and behold, they had largest in stock DVD selection I had ever seen. I picked my movies, paid, went back to CrapUSSR and found the manager the reciept. "We have most of these," he said. "Well, tough shit for you. Remember, you can't move inventory if people can't see it. You just lost a customer for life." I have since spent another grand at Tower, including Pi. --
Yeah, but remember that the average luser doesn't learn keyboard shortcuts. I have seen far too many people freak out when they get a non-95 keyboard and whine about not having the windows95 key. Ctrl-Esc I tell them, "That's too hard!" they reply. Then rather than using the keys, they go for the mouse. They both have their pros and cons, but for me, the CLI is the fastest and more powerful of the two. --
When Katz first started posting here, many people complained because his writing style was too slick and professional. So he has eased up and relaxed a bit because/.ers told him to. Now that he has he gets flak for not being professional enough.
Sheesh.
I think he leaves these mistakes in on purpose to seem more like an average guy. I bet it kills him to hit the Submit button knowing the mistakes are there. -- --

"There is no glory in the geek community to make, say a modem connection utility that can handle all kinds of modems, systems and ISPs. Its not fun either, its just hard work and lots of testing."
What about X-ISP? KPPP? RedHat's netcfg? All are easy to use and configure ppp clients (GUI)
"find / -name myfile -print"
Compare typing this in to say '95: 1.click Start 2.goto Find 3.goto Find Files 4.type in the name of the file you want to find 5.make sure it is looking on the right drive 6.set other options as necessary 6.click Go
Personally I prefer the command line, but if you really want that GUI extra stuff, tyr KDE. I use it as my full time desktop at work and at home. It is highly functional and professional. Anyone who is coming from the world of windows should start with KDE and, once comfortable in linux, move on to gnome, afterstep, windowmaker(my personal favorite), or something else.
One last defense of the command line: rename all files in a directory from name to name.old GUI - click, rename, type new name, repeat CLI - #for file in `ls` >do >mv $file $file.old >done That's all it takes. If you learn to shell program, the GUI tools like "find" and "file manager" becomes less and less important. --
First of all, this is a wonderfully written and compelling article. It moved me and battered me around emotionally. Kudos.
Second, the other day my dad saw my GIMP book that I recently purchased (I don't really need it, but I like supporting the idea that you CAN make money from OSS Software.) He asked me what GNU was and I gave him the three minute run down. The first thing out of his mouth was an incoherent rambling about how he could make money with it, then the barrage of questions hit. He's one of those Get Rich Quick Scheme types that likes to jump on the bandwagon then jump off just before it crashes in effect helping to cause the crash.
He was astounded that I have been using OSS/GNU/Linux for about seven years now and demanded to know why I didn't tell him about it earlier.
I suppose that my point is (there's a point?) I have been using GNU software for a long time, regardless of what MS has been up to, and after the OS wars are long over and BOTH MS and Linux have faded to obscurity, I will still be using GNU/OSS Software. Let the corporations do their moneygrubbing - it affects me not.
