Oh no! You can't do that! You can't invite friends over to your house and play CD's for them. Clearly this would be in violation of the copyright. It's a public performance.
I think if the RIAA had it's way loudspeakers would be illegal and you'd have to listen to music over stereophones.
I use Napster. I buy CD's. (fewer since prices went up $3 in the past few years to $15, I've been used to $11.99 CD's) I use Napster to see if I want to buy a CD. The most recent example is Smashing Pumpkin's Machina. I used Napster to make sure that I would like the CD, and when I had heard enough tracks from the album I decided to purchase it -- which I did.
I also discovered Save Ferris after downloading their cover of Come on Eileen and subsequently purchased their CD entitled It Means Everything.
Damn, I have thought about getting MySQL to play with on my computers at home. But when I read that it only does table level locking, I push all of those desires right out of my mind. Even Jet 4 has row level locking, and before that it had page level locking!
How does/. function with just table level locking? Do you turn that off and have no locks?
Lookout is actually the name that a lot of people use to refer to it internally at Microsoft. I think I even heard of a story where BillG referred to it as Lookout once... don't remember.
In the following code you can see that the trojan is setting IE's default page to one of four URL's that are a link to a file called WIN-BUGSFIX.EXE. I haven't been able to connect to any of the URL's at the user's home dir level yet because my request keeps timing out. Does anyone know what this file does? Is it just a way for the trojan to keep track of computers it has already run from?

Your library must suck. The card-catalog computers in the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County are new NEC computers that are built into an LCD monitor! They only run one app! I have rarely been to the library, I need to go more often, but I've also noticed that they have iMacs in what looks like the media section of the library, and other PC's scattered here and there.
I think that this idea has some merit, but nothing that should libraries should allocate large amounts of money to, but worthwhile still. I hope they are archiving them in plaintext, though.
But you don't want their service. They don't make much money if any on the hardware, so if they sold them "in the hundreds" to people that wanted to hack them, it would be wasted effort on their part. I can understand it. It's like if someone hacked a Dreamcast to put Linux on it... Sega doesn't make any money off of the hardware, it's mainly from licensing.
But those people developed the code, and it only took up one line (probably a line used for other information anyway). MP3.com didn't develop any of the code, they "sponsored" it. And there are way too many sponsors flying by which reduces the signal/noise ratio. Sponsorship notices should go in an "about" window, not fly by during boot.
No, it hasn't. I worked for Microsoft during the rollout of Off2000. Word2000's file format is read & write compatible with Word97's. That means it hasn't changed a whole lot if at all since the last rev. (for once)
XML is used in HTML files created by Off2000 applications (except for FrontPage) to use in "round-tripping" of HTML files from source app, to HTML app, back to source app. You see, there is a small application that reads the XML tags in the HTML files and sends it off to the source app for further editing when you Edit the document. Some information is also stored in the HTML file in XML complient tags to help the source app to provide it with further information about the original source document -- to make it appear seamless.
FrontPage strips these XML tags out of the HTML files and breaks round-tripping.
Isn't speech recognition just like going back to a CLI in terms of intuitiveness? They're both verbal interfaces (VI). I honestly think that some form of GUI is always going to be more intuitive than a VI. I'm not talking strictly about Apple's, Microsoft's, or Be's vision of a GUI, but anything that resprsents the interface visually -- be it 2D or 3D.
Why? Do you think Palm and Handspring are going to have trouble competing with them? Linux shouldn't be on a palmtop (and neither should Windows), just like PalmOS shouldn't be on a desktop. My next palmtop purchase will either be a Palm (flashable ROM) or a Visor (Springboard socket). WinCE or Pocket PC are too bloated for a palmtop.
Netflix distributes movies over the Net... kinda. OK, so you rent your DVD's from Netflix and they send them to you in the mail. It still beats this Miramax crap and Blockbuster. Who would turn down unlimited rentals (only 4 discs out at once) for around $20 a month?
Am I the only one that opposes total electronic distribution of art? I like holding my DVD's, CD's, and books.
...of bandwidth. Everyone talks about all of the great things that they will be able to do over the Net once most people have broadband connections. What they fail to realize is that much of what they want to do already has better channels of distribution and will be a large drain on bandwidth. Once everyone has Cable or DSL service and is downloading Mighty Aphrodite from Miramax everything will slow down, and it'll be like everyone has 33.6 modems again. Keep Net transfers slim!
Special editions take longer to produce. They wanted to get product out as soon as possible. That is the reason for a few month gap between some DVD's and their special edition.
In this case Disney announced both editions at the same time, so you have no one to blame but yourself.
Company X produces Application Y for Macintosh. You want to run Application Y on your Windows 2000 box. Are you going to boycott Company X because they don't make Application Y available for all platforms?
I bought a DVD player so that I could watch DVD's. I intend to watch DVD's in the comfort of my living room, a DVD player is the only acceptable solution to this. The DVD player is the platform, the movie is the application. I don't expect the movie to play on any device that has a tray big enough to hold a 5" disc. What you want is a DVD player for Linux. What you have is a DVD-ROM drive for Linux. Just because the two technologies are similar doesn't mean they are interchangable. I don't go around saying "BOYCOTT ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANICA" because their DVD-ROM encyclopedia doesn't play on my DVD player. Geez...
It'd be nice to have a completely open media format to watch movies on, but we've never had that and I doubt we ever will.
The Digital Bits were reporting on an interview with George Lucas from some radio station out in Cali. So, I'd say it's at least 10% better than a rumor. (since Lucas' word is shit)
...I don't seem to recall Amazon sueing anyone over patent-infringement. At least nothing frivolous. There is nothing wrong with obtaining patents, just enforcing them frivolously.
