Foreign readers are free to (and often do) contribute stories of interest to their own country but Slashdot is based in America and staffed by Americans so please take that into account before whinging about its lack of political correctness.

I have the privilege of working with a long-time software designer who is a pretty good programmer, and a brilliant marketer. When he "talks shop" with me we're on the same wavelength but then he turns around and really knows how to pitch something to a completely clueless client. This arrangement tends to work well, usually. Ideally the division of labor between programmers and marketing guys shouldn't be as sharp as it has historically been. The marketing guys need to get a clue about the technology involved, and the programmers need to get some people skills. (No, seriously. Try it; you might like it.) This way, the two camps can work together to deliver better stuff instead of always fighting and/or cajoling one another. :)

  17. Re:All movies based on games suck on Do-It-Yourself "Dungeons and Dragons" Film Review · · Score: 1

Street Fighter has earned the high-camp cachet of being "so cheesy it's great". Mario Bros., unfortunately, did not do so well, mainly because it was a quite good little movie. It didn't exactly resemble the games it was inspired by, but it had its own cyberpunk-parody feel to it. It was too grown-up for kids and too kiddie for grown-ups. That, I believe, is why it failed.

The game movie to keep your eyes on is Final Fantasy. I firmly expect this movie to ROCK the house. It's not based on any of the previous games, leaving the door wide open for a brand-new plot and some awesome character development. I don't know if there'll be chocobos or moogles or even summons and magic spells, but one thing is for sure: there WILL be a Cid in this movie. And it's coming from the Squaresoft team that made little pixelated sprites come alive with emotion and depth. Imagine what the cutting-edge CG is going to be like.

On the other side of the scale, before Borland absorbed Ashton-Tate, the fine print for dBASE required, among other things, that the software be returned after fifty years from the date of purchase!

  19. Re:Java Exceptions on Why Linux Lovers Jilt Java · · Score: 1

Objects are nice but I've become disillusioned about OOP as some sort of software design holy grail. OOP requires a degree of formalization which scatterbrains like me don't want to deal with in certain applications. I'm a big fan of Scheme and LISP myself, and I rather like Perl (icky syntax, but great concepts). These languages enable you to cobble together an aggregate data structure in function A and pass it to function B, and so long as function B knows what function A is talking about, everything is cool. In Java you have to formalize your structures as objects and, once you have done so, any changes to the structure made in A must not only be reflected in B but also in the formalization. It may not seem like much overhead, but the time consumed in program maintenance really adds up.

I wish I could like Java more than I do. But it is a language designed by, and for, C++ weenies, with a few cool new features added and most of the advantages of C++ removed. It's like C++ with training wheels. It's a neat language, but its primary function in the grand scope of things is in education, and in thrusting the VM idea into the spotlight.
