Too late: how do you think mitochondria and E. Coli happened among our ancestor species?
The theory that Richard Dawkins put in his book "The Blind Watchmaker" is that early on two or more bacteria fused together to supplement each other within the boundaries of one "cell". For this reason, the mitochondria has its own "DNA" separate from the nucleus. This theory was first proposed in 1967 by L.Sagan: http://endosymbionts.blogspot.com/2006/01/on-origin-of-mitosing-cells-1967.html
As finite as infinite can be. Interestingly in mathematical analysis it is well known that there are different levels of infinities. For example, the infinity of integers is not the same as infinity of real numbers.
Clearly all this proves is that we really don't know that much about what's going on in the universe.
Clearly? I think it depends on your sample size. So far we have only been able to collect very little data about some phenomena, and quite a good amount of data about others. So, we do know a lot about some things.
With an infinite universe (such as ours) and finite lifespan (such as ours) there is only so much data we can collect to gather inferences about what we observe. I think what you are saying is redundant.
That's what I was thinking too; and probably just function like an 18-wheeler where a tire can blow out and there's so much support that the load is still distributed adequately.
Basically, all this means is Google designs like Mack while everyone else designs like Chrysler...
I totally agree. Google does have a degree of hype, and infact if you compare their design to Yahoo and eBay, you may find many similarities.
A good amount of online bandwidth is consumed by google, I'd like to see an analysis of redundancy caused by google instead. Recently their search mechanism has gone haywire but noone notices.
If you look at various activities, from filing your taxes to obtaining information or shopping for your favorite laptop, you can do them faster now than say, 20 years ago.
Uhm...do you have the contact information for the Ministry of Fairness, Niceness, and Free Ponies at Taxpayer Expense?
Ayn Rand is overestimated. I don't know whats up with so many people subtly pushing her agenda on slashdot these days.

There's a saying Lions have: you don't look a gift horse in the mouth. You eat it.
april fools maybe?
No, you're mistaken.
Willyhill managed to ID fourteen Twitter accounts. Or is this something completely different?
I think twitter has really gotten to you.
The system relies on sending sound waves that locate objects by bouncing off of them.
Thank you! Simply saying it relied on SONAR would have left us all completely befuddled.
Maybe he was thinking Radar and decided it didn't sound right.
MIT nerds ping fish, echo reply in 0.012 seconds.
Using traceroute after access denied.
David who? Smarty pants....
Maybe David the Goliath.
Now they "accidentally" blew up a star. Great!
But, it was an industrial accident.
For sufficiently finite values of infinity.

If the universe is infinite. It may not be (many, if not most, scientists seem to think it isn't.)
It is infinite compared to our reality, just as an electron is infinitely smaller than a galaxy.
Fine, who am I?
But I know what dude I am. I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude.

I've been a bot for years.
I used to chat with bots of Quake3Arena.
Its fun, you never know what they'll say before launching a rocket in your direction.
If only this guy had this new feature. Then again, maybe not.
he did mention "deep regret", a feeling hard to shake off in 5 seconds. Anger however, is another issue.
Kudos to the MIT faculty for choosing the right road forward.

I'm behind 7 proxies
Hi, could you describe how you do it? I tried TOR and it seems too slow for practical use.
Just you. I kept thinking about how I could use a car metaphor to describe how google...oh wait.
I kept thinking about derailing a car, before I realized I was on the wrong track.
I think you want to say that if the answer was found, the universe would cease to exist and be replaced with something even more inexplicable.
if it moves, it's biology.
Or gravity.
Only if it's a force over a distance working against gravity is it work :P
So no gravity, no work....therefore no physics!
How does it differ from the age of non-speed?

Global cooling on its way?
Global cooling by cutting off sunlight won't be good for life on our planet.
I'm sure he's looking at it from the view of, "Every computer in the world should be running Windows!"
I'd say he may be subconsciously thinking of Linux...Same hardware + linux = cheaper than with OS/X or Windows
and Slashdot is about Technology.
Really? I thought Slashdot is about moderators!
