    I think it also has something to do with the fact that cars are almost gaussian surfaces, that is with the antenna no longer extended, no charge (or little charge) gets to it, and bad reception occurs.

    The same things happens if you put the antenna down (like in a car wash).

    OK, I admit making assumptions about how something is going to be used is stupid.

    As for supporting devices that don't exist, I was thinking more of testing. How do we test how our software works on hardware that is still on the drawing board or a gleam in the designer's eye.

    DirectX in general is pretty crapped up. Although DirectInput isn't so bad for dealing with the keybaord, but joysticks... good god! Somewhere in "Inside DirectX" (I can't find it at the moment), it talks about how DInput was designed for joysticks and controlors that have yet to be made. WTF? Why would I support a device that doesn't exist? Man, can you imagine the testing...

    And device enumeration... is it _really_ needed? How many people actually have more than one display device? (Add ons like Voodoo not included...) Why wouldn't I want to use the primary device?

    Short in simple: it was poorly designed, but at least you can get it to perform half decent, speedwise anyhow, but debugging full screen DirectDraw apps requires remote debugging; maybe there's something to these windowed games after all.

    I had those problems with the LS-120. Bought it for my machine (when it was just parts in a bag...) The guy said that to boot from it you had to load the drivers for your OS. Huh? This is a new machine, I try to explain, it has no OS yet.

    Well, after a few minutes of trying to explain myself I just went and picked up a $10 floppy drive.

    Well, sure I've got a ZIP, and a tape; however, at the office and around, the good old floppy is the only thing I can count on people having. Besides, I haven't found (maybe not looking hard enough) a utility that will let me boot linux through the ZIP. Can it boot from CD like Solaris?

    Hey, just coz we have all this space to waste, doesn't mean we should. Distributing by floppy is a nice way to cut down code size. Small programs are happy programs.

    How can there really be a low end and a high end? Wouldn't that vary by what the machine was designed to do? ASCI Red is #1; but can it run DOOM? My PC can run DOOM, but can it outperform ASCI Red? Embedded machines are only to deal with the device that they're placed in; not really any point to compare them to supercomputers...

    I believe spoken defamation is slander.

    But, people should be safe if they don't post opinions as fact. There is a difference between "Company XYZ sucks because their product breaks." and "In my experience, I have not been satisfied with what Company XYZ has produced."

    I am pretty sure that is how the line is drawn... of all the times not to be near the law library. Where is Westlaw when we need it?

    I akways figured the reason for the certification was because the products that have tests are poorly designed. That is to say, so bloated and poorly implemented that reading a book and taking a 1300$ test is the only way to learn how to use it. I have yet to have that problem with non-Windows based stuff; especially NeXT. Oh, how I miss the black boxes.

    I agree. I have had many problems with 6.0 that I didn't with earlier distributions; but I'm willing to bet that they're config problems on my end.

    Especially Netscape's running in monochrom mode under AfterStep (when AfterStep is in 24bit mode).

    I think NT has USB support through one of the service packs; there was an SGI NT machine at school with a USB keyboard.

    However, Windows 98 cannot use USB devices, even keyboards until it loads the USB drivers. that was a nasty surprise when installing Win 98 one day; especially since the BIOS could find the keyboard.

    Chalk it up to USB being still fairly new, I suppose.

    Yeah, no one ever said Linux was completely crash free; just that the events that cause crashes are fewer and farther between.

    Yes, and the question about how many stormtroopers have you shot? There should be a choice for "none", as Jedi do not use weapons as clumsy or random as a gun. (It's in ANH, I believe)

    Actually, odds are more likely 1:1... And it would be worth a fortune, if you can find someone who'd buy it. I think the bootleg VHS or whathaveyou will be the more likely route. I mean, how many people would have a copy of TPM projector film?

    Yeah, and the military expert on 60 minutes. Sure, the USMC uses DOOM for training. And they also pound slogans into recruits such as
    "What makes the grass grow?" "Blood!"
    "What our job?" "Kill! Kill! Kill!"
    "God loves the Corps, becuase we keep the gates of heaven packed with new people."

    Hell, I'd prolly get a bit whacky if people keep yelling "One shot: one kill!" at me for eight weeks.

    Rachel finally dressed up as Leia because (to stress a point made by several people) she cared about Ross and dressing up like that once would make him happy. That is what love is (well, partly, but hey.. people have been discussing that one for centuries) people making other people happy, even if they may not enjoy it as much.

    Hey, my world stops once a week for RPG's, and I have no problem with that. My g/f on the other hand (who goes on and on and on about Tom Cruise) is bothered by it. But hey, if she wants me to listen about what color draw's Tom wears, she has to deal with my Friday evening to Saturday gaming fests.

    Simply... Everyone has a passion about something; and don't try to change them, just deal with it and we'll all be happier.

    Well id Software with Hovertank (and actually Wolf3d) did create the FPS popularity and thus all this stuff about 3D cards and extremely large multiplayer matches and such. It took a while to get the ball rolling, but id did the pushing.

    I agree. Although, I can see "needing" hardware dedicated to 3D. It involves a lot of floating point (well, fixed point if you really want speed) math and some trig.

    As far as bad code, I think it may be more of "Well, now most people have 200MHz machines... we don't need to spend so much time optimizing." Of course, having faster machines means getting you existing code to fly rather than an opportunity to become lazy.

    What does he mean by "dinky, feature-weak, [and] application-starved"?

    Linux supports virtual memory, TCP/IP, SMP, very large disks, and all the stuff Windows does (well, maybe not hardware wise... yet).

    As for dinky? How many CS people honestly think making a program bigger makes it better? Just more places for bugs to occur.

    "Normalcy" is a myth that The Man uses to help keep the "status quo". But, I agree, normal is anything but.

    But what you have said really should be on a person by person basis. What freaks out one person may not affect another. Has nothing to do with occupation or anything.

    One of my good friends, who is a CS major, tokes up, drops, eats shrooms, and drinks. Sometimes in a combination. Although, I can't say his habits are ones I want to emulate; but hell, I ain't gonna stop him.

    This whole thing reeks of a holy war to me.

    Everytime he mails me it's "Hey, man I just smoked/drank/dropped..." and goes from there to soemthing like "drugs rule! You should get high!"

    *sarcasm*Yeah, I wanna spend a Saturday evening thinking my wall is a TV, or pent up in a dorm room cuz I can't find the door. I forget some of the other things.
