As an American atheist, your custom looks pretty much the same from here.
Doesn't he say that these two things are equivalent? He says:
"When I was at school in Britain, every morning we said a prayer to God. In America I believe your kids pledge allegance to the flag of the United States of America."
True, however retaining that is not guaranteed. TigerDirect is not paying for their position on the first page of search results, right? We are discussing a service provided by a third party, for free. I'm sure there are plenty of ways (apart from Apple releasing a new OS) that someone can lose their high Google rank.
I guess TigerDirect could pay for advertising space from Google to ensure they're on the first page of results.
It's a bit tough on TigerDirect but does not seem to have a strong foundation for litigation.
I've always been an obstinate prick that insists on using Linux. If a company will not let me choose the OS I run, frankly I don't want to work for them.
It's a different physical activity with very different ramifications. Hypothetically, If I did something that infringed on your copyright you'd be justifiably upset. If I slept with your wife without permission you'd more likely be psychologically traumatised.
My argument is thus: In general the "sleeping with wife" analogy elicits an emotional response greater than the subject of copyright infringement thus raises the apparent seriousness of "copyright infringement".
Of course what I say above is not necessarily always the case: peoples reactions to the situation will be different. Some may love their copyrighted music more than their wife, who knows?
Anyway I'm sounding a lot more emotional than my convictions on the subject and I'm being pedantic. It's something that irk's me, that's all. I didn't expect such attention, stupid me:)
the analogy was "societal normalities of the past that don't make sense today."
Yes yes yes. That doesn't make the analogy any more appropriate: it's an analogy designed to provoke an emotional reaction that's outside the scope of the subject.
It's like using "kidnapping someone's child" as an analogy for stealing someone's car. They're just not similar activities AT ALL.
assuming you're a fellow, how about i come over to your house and "share" your wife / partner?
Seriously I don't know how people can use this emotive and inappropriate analogy. It's used for the GPL too.
For fuck's sake: There is a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE between sharing copyrighted works and sharing someone's wife. One is copyright infringement, the other is adultery.
Huh? I tried it. It works. I got the entire footage of Ben Hur on a 3.5" floppy.
Now I just need a movie player that will automatically un-LZW(x5), bunzip(x15), gunzip (x5), unarj(x10), unzip(x10) then decode the resultant mpeg stream on the fly.
You're comparing GPL software to Habitat for Humanity? What planet are you from? People NEED homes and food. They DON'T need software. The whole philanthropic aspect of the GPL is bunk IMO.
You're arguing that because food is more immediately and apparently important than software that the ideals behind free software are bunk?
That's a pretty shallow POV. Think of supporting infrastructure such as telecommunications, electricity, roads/transport, controlled irrigation and sewage.
I'm sure that free software could come in real handy somewhere in the above equation.
Wallace claims, correctly, that Gnu is selling their product for less than what it costs to produce it. That's called DUMPING, and it's against the law.
So selling a loss leader is illegal now? Better call Microsoft's X-Box division.
Even if Mr. Wayne is certain of his actions, that won't necessarily be portrayed as a good thing...
This could be ok, so long as the movie doesn't dwell on the moralistic issues too much. I think the more sensitive of us just need a hint of conflict to realise the existence of philosophical undercurrents.
There are dark Batman comics available yes? If Nolan has taken some good bits from these comics we could be in for a pretty decent flick. I'm glad Christian Bale is the protagonist: he was great in American Psycho.
I really enjoyed the X-Men and X2 movies. The action and special effects are great, the main actors and their characters are solid, the moral issues are well-presented and the plots hold together. Certainly not the best films ever but certainly amongst the best comic->film translations.
Microsoft is having a hard time finding skilled workers within the United States
Perhaps part of the problem is the confusing MS-Centric IT Sector, where people learn "The Wild Wild World According to Microsoft's current Product Offerings" rather than genuine Computer Science.
I had visions of otherwise demure, bookish girls wearing glasses duking it out in a wafer fab plant before tumbling over a workbench into a pit of jelly...
Perhaps you should lay off the anime for a month or two my friend. =)
Annoyingly hypnotic buzzing sound convinces all that this is wise.
All hail the Hypnotoad!
A friend of mine had the best description of the Hypnotoad sound effect: violating.
I won't be surprised when I hear a sample of the Hypnotoad sound integrated into a hardcore dance track.

Or a $200 dollar plane ticket to a 3rd world country, and all the hookers you'd ever want for a few dollars!
You might not get the "nice" ones then however.

Part of the whole freedom of speech thing means you have to be responsible enough to handle it.
Freedom of speech is not absolute. I don't have the right to publish your mother's address on usenet with the title "Maureen O'Gara's Home Address".
