That is the biggest problem with Firefox, it doesn't work with policies. Otherwise there might be many more companies running Firefox instead of IE.
And if it is just for sake of "running properly", check here for new Javascript compatibility: http://sputnik.googlelabs.com/
First place Opera, followed by FF and Chrome, then IE with 6 time more errors than Opera -.-
see a nice video at work -> bookmark and watch at home
see an interesting article or something you want to read -> bookmark and read at home
see anything you want to keep -> bookmark it and use the same bookmarks on every computer
dual boot into Windows -> use the same bookmarks
setup a new computer -> go to xmarks.com, login and you have all your bookmarks in ~1min
I thought about Opera for everything and use their service then. Apparently their browser is most stable if it comes to Javascript etc. the big xulrunner package is annoying anyway:D
because of XMarks, I now have to decide which browser to use:/
OK I am sorry, this installation is for gaming only and I actual didn't really try to find out how to search properly in Windows
If you do a search on a folder with the service "Windows Search" stopped, it returns nothing and tells you to turn on indexing on for that folder.
If you want to search in general without usung the index you have to be able to set the search and folder options if not disabled by policy.
To do so is really easy, just click on "Organize" and choose "folder and search options" from the dropdown menu. Switch from "General" to the "Search" Tab and untick "Don't use the index when searching in file folders for system files (searching might take longer)". Confirm with OK and you can search normally.
If I boot into Windows, I often find myself in explorer to start from C:\ going to Users then expand my usernamefolder and guess where the file might be. You cannot search folders that are not indexed, even though about every 30min your harddrive goes nuts?
Sure they want to force users to use those libraries and index the whole system, but I am not really ready for that and want to know where my files are.
I use it for gaming...
yesterday it kicked me out of my Eve Online game to the desktop with Eve still running and my ships in open space! I still had the Eve mouse pointer but was back on the desktop (no chance to access anything with the mouse or alt-tabbing) -.-
Windows wanted to tell me, that it installed the new ATI driver...
Thanks very much. I had to ctrl+alt+del to kill the Eve client and reboot my system. Afterwards quickly start the Eve client, warp to the location, pickup all drones as fast as possible etc. etc.
Torchlight runs fine under Windows, Diablo2 works fine as well (which would even run properly under wine).
Mostly I have no problems with drivers, except of missing Atheros drivers which I had to install manually and the driver dvd for my motherboard didn't even load.
For Desktop usage it is getting worse, not only has Windows still only one desktop but it also makes funny stuff with it's windows. If you get to close to the top right corner with your open window it halway maximizes it for you. If you get to far to the top is maximizes it. If you get too far to the left... etc.
Why do I still dualboot into Windows?
I have an ATI graphics card and cannot run any 3D app in wine using the radeon driver:(
Whereas the GNU (ls, pwd, sort, head, gcc, bash etc.) is done by the FSF (Free Software Foundation). Here is a list of contributors: GNU
If I put those programs together and make my own startscripts with e.g. init, systemd or whatever, I get a distribution. How close is Ubuntu to the actual version of the program in their distributions, which is necessary to contribute at all?
Here is an interesting statistic, how close distributions are with the upstream version: oswatershed.org
I believe the top distributions here are also the ones with the most upstream patches to get the used programs working.
I am wondering how much money this costs again
The media industry claims to loose money and then sends our ploice force out to raid us and we pay for it...
It is too early, I think. Gentoo is stuck between three systems at the moment. The stable is baselayout-1, the unstable is openrc and a heavily active systemd bug report. Apparently several init scripts don't like systemd and need adjustments, this takes time.
I am not heavily rebooting or stopping/starting services, so it's not really a problem to me and I am happy with openrc atm:)
Right, I remember this one scene in the movie Minority Report where they move pictures along on a big glass-screen. Try to do this kind of stuff on a touchscreen...
Maybe it matters:) I am a German living in the UK.
We have internet, games, videos and music in the library. This is a small town of about 30k citizens and you pay no fee to rent a book etc. The printouts are rather expensive with 10p per page.
When I came over from Dublin/Ireland, I used the free internet to look for a room. In Dublin I dropped about 50 DVDs and 50 books at the library before I moved.
This is a good point, but the wrong reason.
Just because you don't want to change your behaviour is not important, new generations will not care what you thought back then.
For me it is important, that I know how much space is taken and if the file still fits. Everything else makes the files on the computer abstact and you don't really know what you actual do on a computer.
Some examples:
1. hiding part of the filename on the filesystem (file extensions)
2. index files, so you don't know where they are actual stored anymore
3. store files you downloaded from the internet to view them in your browser (temp internet files) in a database
4. change the actual file size to some rounded number in base10
Change is good, but some of the new "inventions" makes you learn bullshit and stuff that is just not true. This is just another attempt to make the computer more like a toaster.
I was cured by Red Altert 3, where they did or did not remove the drm afterwards. After 6 month being installed on my machine and fully patched it refuses to start anymore (drm error). There isn't even an offcial customer support for that game, you have to go throught your retailer or rely on the community. Reinstall, few GB patch and try again is the common solution.
I am not buying from EA anymore...
It is sad about the game:(
The software can still be created in the basements of the companies and they do not need to open their source and they can still sell this game if they like to.
What we don't want is copyright on things like "double click", "a search engine in the middle of a web page", "a container based document format" to name the big fails of copyright!
Why can www.youtube.com not just switch to another codec?
If you buy a stupid dvd player nowadays 1/4 of the price are actual licences. Who pays for all the licences in the end? Right, it's you going into the shop to buy it.
At least in Germany is the idea of reducing licencing to a very less amount of time. A number of 5 years comes into mind, from then on everybody can use the new technology in their products.
Now comes the music part: After 5 years it could be remastered, mixed and create total new great content without caring about licences. No money flow to the big bosses in the business who hold nearly all of the copyrights.
The guy at home who shares music with his friend shouldn't be brought to court. People always copied stuff, if it was on floppy, cd, mail, p2p or whatever, this became part of our culture. Now you want to punish all the people and ruin their lifes in the name of money?
Bands and musicians could give concerts to get money out of their music. Pulic playing of songs should still pay something back to the author. Additionally we think about a kind of GEMA 2.0 where people with Internet Access pay a little fee, which is used to pay artists on the internet directly and not the labels. And still they could sell their CDs.
If you build up a reputation, people would buy the software or music etc. and probably donate money to keep up the good work.
Two examples:
Every now and then I get a popup when I try to play my Red Alert3 copy, I hate their drm crap and will never buy something again. Back in 2004 or something I thought about buying B&W II but it won't work on my system because I had daemon tools installed. Why does the software care what else I have on the system?!? I didn't buy the copy!
I have all copys of NWN and NWN2 because this game is just awesome and I like it. Guess what, it has just a normal CD-Key and after installation you can even play without CD! What costs additional money is to download more storys from their page after the main story is finished.
On my shelf are about 10 Linux ports of games as well
The same with music, I download quiet a lot from Jamendo and if I like it, I pay for it. The other stuff just gets deleted.
I tested one of the 2.6.32-rc and it actual works, but don't expect much performance:) Make sure you use >=mesa-7.6 and a decent radeon xorg driver... works also great with xorg-server-1.7 while ati-drivers don't...
I see it a little like domains. If a domain is already taken, you contact the owner and pay for it. If an IP is already taken...
That is the biggest problem with Firefox, it doesn't work with policies. Otherwise there might be many more companies running Firefox instead of IE.

I am another poor Asus motherboard guy running Windows 7 on it :D
The branch is not as good as it was known to be?
Microsoft doesn't deserve any credit for driver support. I believe they don't give a shit and tell the manufactures to provide new drivers...
I first thought of Diaphragma :D

I think Ubuntu is a good player, if it comes to contributions to the community.
What we refer to as Linux, is made up of many tools around the Linux kernel. Here are just the informations I found on programs running on nearly every distribution
The biggest player in contributing to Linux kernel is still RedHat. Here are the top contributers:
Within that field, Red Hat topped that chart with 12%, followed by Intel with 8%, IBM and Novell with 6% each, and Oracle 3%.
Whereas the GNU (ls, pwd, sort, head, gcc, bash etc.) is done by the FSF (Free Software Foundation). Here is a list of contributors: GNU

To run an Onion node is prohibited in several countries (e.g. in Germany).
just two examples:
German police raid home of man who operated Tor server
German Cops Raid Home of Wikileaks and Tor Volunteer
I heard of others in forums, where the police put down whole server farms -.-
welcome to the real world...
I just read that Ubuntu is not going to use systemd
:)

Only the government is allowed to filter traffic, save ip addresses, listen to your phone calls...
:)
I mean read your emails...
oh no, I mean save the email address
I have the Woody Allen collection in a metal box :)
Also I have reservoir dogs in a metal dvd case, that looks like a matchbox...

up and running: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbDcMfu-i4w&feature=fvhl
Oh thanks :)
Anyway, see it as a patent appraoche then for the technical part.
It still applies to the music stuff and "intellectual property" until you die and your grandchildren die and their children etc.
The software can still be created in the basements of the companies and they do not need to open their source and they can still sell this game if they like to.

yupp, they are well organized and there will be a meeting held by all leaders of the pirate parties in europe afaik

The problem with old people is, that they still believe in the government and trust them ^^
Hehe, I was searching the page for this information. Someone would know how to proper use the man pages ;)
