I won't be ditching my Casio for that thing, but I reckon the battery life will be low because of the screen. Besides, the battery is not that large to begin with, if the user doesn't make calls the Bluetooth v4 connection won't drain the battery very much, see the "Bluetooth Smart" part: https://developer.bluetooth.org/TechnologyOverview/Pages/v4.aspx
I do not deny that the areas they invest in are areas that would benefit us all but the way they do it is not in any way open, accessible or selfless.
Well, i guess sometimes it's better to benefit us all even if it isn't open and selfless than being open and selfless and not benefiting us all, isn't it?:P
Slashdotters have been grumbling forever that thorium is the way to go, why the hell does it matter if Gates is the one that spends money on it? The guy had some dickish and questionable business practices, but as as far as I know he's not a Bond villain.
I know of people that bought them for 190 euros, for someone that only uses the tablet to browse the web and edit office documents I guess it is a reasonably good deal, but some of them are a bit disappointed with the lack of flexibility of windows rt.
I can't believe how fucking retarded the anti-gun crowd can be, while not even realizing it.
You guys get very passionate when discussing guns, I don't live in the USA but, from what I see in the media, the pro-gun crowd seems to be at least as "retarded".
You do have to admit that you guys have a problem of too many deaths by firearms, either because it's too easy to get a gun, or the problem is in your culture and education you have to make something about it.
Also, how the hell can you claim you live in the "land of the free", while getting groped at the airports and not demanding someone's head for the shenanigans of NSA & co.?
When devices with embedded electronics can't handle sterilization with gamma rays or electron beams, they usually can be sterilized chemically with stuff like chlorine dioxide or vaporized hydrogen peroxide.
The problem with that (subscription) revenue model is that there are lots of sites with decent content that lots of people enjoy but almost no one is willing to pay for, I would only be willing to pay for just a couple of all the sites I view daily.
I'm perfectly happy to tolerate a couple of ads per page, the AdBlock problem was caused by greedy people that filled the pages with lots of annoying and distracting flashing random colors, enough flash ads to make my laptop fan scream and even screaming loud videos that would autoplay.
I'm not familiar with the instruments described in your link, but they don't look either cheap or suitable to use in a consumer video camera.
The clips of the meteor shower and the guy with the incense looked like they were taken at video frame rates, that prototype camera looks like it can be hiding a Peltier cooler, thoughttp://hardware.slashdot.org/story/13/03/05/0219240/canon-shows-the-most-sensitive-camera-sensor-in-the-world#h.
That may be true, but all the good quality fluorescent bulbs I've bought lately have a color quality at least as good as the good quality LED ones and with very similar power efficiency.
I've found a place were LEDs are superior, tough, we have a corridor with a motion sensor with 5 bulbs and, with dozens of daily starts, some CFLs don't even last 6 months there, others quickly get very dark near the heating filament. I replaced them with cheap LED bulbs and they are going strong after one year.
Are you saying that you can't use nokia maps without internet? What device/OS are you using?
I use them on my nokia C7 (Symbian Belle) without internet, I just downloaded the maps and voices I wanted and that's it. I do find, however, that the address search is a lot better if I'm connected to the internet.
Then of course there's the fact that 802.11n completed changed frequency bands, from the 2.4 GHz region (which is extremely cluttered) to the 5 GHz region, which is relatively empty.
The better and more expensive Access Points can usually operate at both 2.4 and 5GHz, but most of the affordable 802.11n devices only operate at 2.4GHz (at least those I can find).
I was looking for a wireless card to enable an old laptop to connect to my 5GHz AP and I found that pretty much all of the cheap wireless cards also only operate at 2.4GHz.
In that situation you could have catwalks above the liquid and use some kind of mechanism that lifted the rack with the equipment that required service to the height of the operator.
As for the slippery floor hazard, I've recently been in a vegetable oil recycling plant and they use a floor coating that resembles sand paper so people don't slip on greasy areas.
No one said they invented anything. I imagine that, like me, there are a lot of readers that don't have the chance to see one of these modern data centers everyday. I found the original photos very interesting.
I know Symbian would not take Nokia anywhere, the Symbian "App market" is pathetic compared to Android's one and that's one of the things that sell phones, but why didn't Nokia built several lines of phones (Meego, Windows and Android) like Samsung, LG and HTC did? I know it would be expensive, but I'm sure Nokia had money in 2010 to match at least HTC and LG.
I have a Nokia C7-00 (Symbian) and I like it, it's very well built and it does everything I need, the free worldwide turn-by-turn navigation is awesome and I got Symbian updates more often than some Android users did. If they had an Android handset built like this one and with the same free navigation I would probably replace it.

Citizen has been selling Bluetooth 4 enabled watches for some time, their watches use the bluetooth connection the get the current time from the internet a couple of times a day and run from a tiny solar cell: http://www.citizenwatch.com/en-ir/2012/10/12/citizen-eco-drive-unveils-proximity/

a) Give away inventory for free at schools etc
They are not for free yet, but they are being sold to schools at discount prices: http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_in_education/archive/2013/06/19/it-s-true-we-re-putting-surface-rt-in-the-hands-of-educators-and-students-schools-and-universities.aspx

Pastafarianism?
Just because you and me don't use twitter, that doesn't mean her generation won't when they are older :)

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Win8 64-bit only?
Windows 8 is available in both x86-32 and x86-64 versions, check the version comparison chart here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions

For definitions of US that include:
Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bolivia, Belgium, Belize, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Italy, Jamaica, Japan (sort of), Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, Tahiti, Taiwan, Turkey, and the Virgin Islands.
All countries here in Europe use 230V +-6% so, unless I misunderstood what you are saying, that list is not accurate.
