Even if Napster cuts into record sales, which I seriously doubt, there's not much that the RIAA could or should do about it. The internet makes it so much easier to pirate music and software, and if Napster gets shut down, there's still Gnutella and other such programs. I think CD Burners cut more into CD sales than Napster, and you can't go around making sure no one burns CD's. The music industry must find a new business model to complement their CD sales, such as ad-supported music sites on the internet.

Benchmark demonstrations ran roughly twice as fast on the dual-G4 system compared to the single-G4 Power Mac that was on stage. I don't know if it's time to drool yet. This seems a little fishy. With current multi-processing systems, each processor does not do alternate operations rather each processes a different thread. Of course, if you're running a program that has only one thread that requires 80% of a CPU's power, then the speed increase using two processors will be negligible since one will have an 80% load while the other will have a 1% load doing the background operations (like OS, etc.) Twice the speed doesn't sound right.

Actually, the question is when and if we will ever see this type of bandwith. It seems like every few weeks, we hear about some new technology from Lucent, Cisco, Qwest, or some other company which allows for insane bandwith. Yet I'm still stuck at home with a 128 kbps dual ISDN connection, which is faster than most people's 56K (no games though, stupid company firewall). When will this technology be available for the average consumer? High-speed connections do exist in my area, such as cable and DSL, yet these have too many problems (shared lines, bad reliability, etc.) to be a viable alternative to the old 56K for mainstream consumers, not to mention much more expensive. When someone comes up with a fast, reliable, and cheap (sounds like some oxymoron) from of transmitting information that will be available soon, then I'll be interested.

Actually, the Geforce 2 can't support full scene anti-aliasing at resolutions higher than 1280x1024x16 or 1024x768x32 because of the way the nVidia FSAA works. The video card renders the screen at twice the resolution (there's also a mode in ehich it only renders twice the resolution one way-i'm not sure whether vertical or horizontal) and shrinks it down to the original size. So FSAA at 1600x1200 would mean the video card rendering at 3200x2400, which it can't do.

  10. Monopoly anyone? on AOLization of America · · Score: 1

AOHell is aiming to become the Micro$oft of internet service providers. They're target audience is the same as the Microsoft's-inexperienced users. AOL has also been caught using unfair business practices, such as the fiasco with AOL 5.0 disabling all other ISP accounts on a computer. How long will this last? It's a little surprising that the government, especially with the Microsoft antitrust case going on, would let these two companies merge. AOL, like Microsoft, does not supply a superior product than its competitors, only one that may be easier to use for some people. On the other hand, there is some hope considering other ISP's are starting to offer the same services as AOL, but people unfortunately will still get AOL because of its name.

Nowadays, it's pretty hard to be sure about the facts on issues such as these. After I submitted this story, I read in different places that a back door exists, a backdoor doesn't exist, a buffer overrun exists, nothing exists, etc. Who can we believe? Much as I love the open source community, I find it hard to trust it more than I trust Microsoft. Both have a stake in news such as this, so it's hard to find an impartial judge on this issue (considering I spend most of my time on sites favorable to linux).

Another issue I have with the bug report: one of the previous stories on slashdot claimed that this was a good example of closed source's shortcomings. Why is it that whenever Microsoft's products are found to have bugs in them, everyone in the Open Source community cries out, "See, we told you"? I think some of our credibility is lost when this happens, especially when the backdoor is found to not exist. Another issue is that of fair journalistic reporting. Instead of immediately reporting this "news" like a tabloid, Cnet and whatever other sites that first came out with this report should have actually checked to see if it had any merit before scaring all the webmasters around who are unlucky enough to still use NT. While a respectable site such as slashdot posted the retraction, other sites may not do this and this can harm many consumers.

If I increase the voltage a little, I could probably run it at 350 with a little more cooling. If you know what you're doing, it's pretty hard to mess the chip up.

Also, I doubt Doom runs any faster on an OCd computer. Ignorant journalists-nerver heard of anything but doom.

Maybe we males just want to save a little money. I'd rather overclock a 750 MHz ($400 max) to 1 Ghz with a $30 Alpha cooler than pay $1400 for a 1 GHz chip.
