[Now that that I got you in with the doom and gloom title, I will spew-forth-my-idea's]
A privacy respecting business on the Internet are doomed to fail. Why? Because the people who have the choice to make a privacy respecting business are the businesses themselves. Why would any business that wants to make money give up information or prevent itself from gathering information on its customers that would make it a better business? If a business could gather all the info it wanted on you, it would. Why? So it could make|sell a product|service that you want|need.
Personally, I think it is unethical that businesses try and do gather all the information on as they can, but businesses are out to make money, not be ethical.
Well, if you can't convert RPM's to what ever you use, then you should be running Redhat. I have Slackware 7 installed, but it is Redhat 6.0 compatable. All I have to do is convert the RPM's to tar.gz and install. No problem.
No shit. I totally agree. What I hate about FP is that not only are ' turned into ?, but it always looks like shit on my Linux Netscape. Worst of all, the web page is a mile long but only takes up 4 inches across of my 19 inch monitor. Come on! I have all this monitor space, use it!
Okay, not all of us Geeks eat like crap. I am one that tries to eat "right". Ya, I have my overdose of Caffine everyday, but other than that, I eat pretty well.
The Dilberito actually looks like it is "healthy". The Fat content is good amount, and its Saturated Fat is 0 or.5 grams. The Fiber content is pretty good at about 25% DV on average. The Calories count is also well at 310 average per serving. Wash it down with some Caffine product and you would be set for the day.
My only complant is that if you ate 4 of these things with the Nutrent content it has some people might get sick or overdose on Vitamin A and Iron. Although for most Slashdot readers this would not be a problem.
Preach on Brother! I run (ran) one NT machine now, and I tell BO with the cool plugins is the best way to manage the thing. Some thing does not work, fire it up and fix it. When I got BO on it, I tossed it up on a rack and forgot about it. Just log in with BO and check it out every now and then. Great thing is that I can reboot it remotely! Sweet!
Why can't get people get real Web Servers or in this case a real SQL server. MySQL is pretty lightweight and fast, but what are they running it on, 486?
I am really curious, when a server is./'ed and it can not handle it, what are they running? Anyone know?
What ever happened to code delays, late shipping and all those other things we have come to expect from software producers ?
I have always wondered about this. What the Free Software movement has done is amazing. With the free software (As in beer) there are no code delays, late shipping and other MS tatics we have grown use to.
Linux, *BSD's and other notable Free Software have changed that. I think the computer world is moving back to a "Put Up or Shutup" World. Just look back over the last few years and see what has changed. Has a large (Or any) company tried and succeed with a vaporware or overhype tatic? MS is trying with Win2000, but people are bulking. What about Win98? Same thing happened. Win98 came out, and everyone was doing the "I'll see" thing.
Now with companies like MS seeing their reign over the computer industary demishing, alot of hardware companies are now doing what they want. Intel wants to sell chips. It does not care their chips are running Linux, BSD, BeOS or MS. They just want to move thier product out the door. Now, a few years ago, Intel could have never did with the Pentuim and PII line what they are doing with the IA64. Supporting another OS that underminds MS market.
So where is my rambling going? Well, here is how I see it, "code delays, late shipping and all those other things we have come to expect from software producers" are going to deminish greatly.
Why? Simple. With Free Software putting pressure on software makers, software companies are going to start putting their software where they mouths are, since there are free alternitives out there. Why would you risk YOUR job or YOUR business on a promise of another company? Waiting for MS to add some feature into IIS might cost you time, money, or worse, business. Apache with Mod_Perl will deliever more for less money.
You want a "real unix" Blah. Unix is such a generic term now a days. Who cares if the FreeBSD is descended from Unix that came out 15 years ago. Standards come and go, and new ones pop up. Saying something is "Real" in the Unix world is pretty dumb and short sighted. I think my Linux boxen are pretty damn Real Unix. Looks like Unix on the front end and runs like Unix on the back end. Makes it Unix to me.
You want something more stable than either of the above mentioned OSes Anyone have ANY proof of this? I here this all the time, but I have yet to see one study that proves it right. Just saying something is true does not make it true. In this part, I would give a slight upper hand to FreeBSD since it only has distribution. Linux main problem is that there are too many distributions that have too many dumb people running generic stock kernels. Personally, the only way I would be convinced is that you took a FreeBSD box and Linux box and put them on a load balancing hub (Switch) and then compare kernel panics, and amount of work each did. The tests would exclude all problems related to non-kernel issues.
You want something more secure than either of the above mentioned OSes Again, proof. I have ran Linux in a production environment and the only security problems that I have had were with some lamers packet sniffing on the other side of the network. The "Other End" consisted of HP/UX and Sun machines.
So in the end, I think that a good admin that knows how to run the machine(s) the right way will prevent all (Or most) problems.
Before you go off and fill your little Neice's head with Sci Fi, make sure she gets a healthy exposure to the classics.
Sci Fi is a great way to get childern into reading, however, they may fill up only on it, ignoring the classic readings that makes up her/your culture. For example, if she is an American, reading a couple of these: Animal Farm, 1984, Catch 22, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Of Mice and Men, and anything from Egar Allen Poe (Little heavy for the young) would be a good start. I only say this since I meet to many people who have not read any of the American classics in America.
Remember that the Classics are the foundation that most of todays readings are build on.
My thought now is that Public Enemy (That Rap Group) is going to have to change their famous song, "911 is a joke" to "Linux is a joke" if this company makes a bad product.
I can just see Flavor Flav on MTV with the changed lirics, "Get up, Get Get Get down, Linux is a joke, a joke in yo' town".
Or better yet! When someone is hurt, you run over to another person by a phone and say, "Quick! Someones been hurt, call L-I-N-U-X!"
Half of school is what you do outside of the class room while naked with someone of the opposite sex. Okay, Internet connections are not being used for school work but that is a perk of living in the dorms. Living in dorm is kinda lame, but alot of places you have no choice. The downside of dorms are someone is always looking over your shoulder, you can't have alcohol or drugs, you have to be around people you don't like, and you lose a alot of privacy. What you get are friends, knowledge of parties and a fast Internet connection. Take any of that away, and living in dorms is like living with your parents but costs *alot* of money.
I think this Republicain lady is alittle uptight. She probably was one those girls in the dorms that did not have sex, do drugs, drink or goto parties. So fo some wierd reason, she is taking it out on everyone else.
Mapping where someone's Cell Phone can and does save lives. People stuck in mountains, snow, and other places where the owners of the phone don't know where they are. If they can't keep track of you by phone number, then what is the big whoop?
I just got back from job fair and it seems that Linux is become a force in the industary. I have a Linux and GNU skill heavy resume and about 5 out of the 40 booths were very happy to see me and my resume. Many shops are going Linux/*BSD for a couple of reasons. It's Free (As in BEER) and it runs on off the shelf PC and Alpha hardware (Which is pretty damn close to Free BEER). Another benefit to knowing Linux, is that if you can install Slackware or Debain (or one of the other Need to Think Distibutions) and maintain them, then you can switch to HP/UX and/or SunOS rather easily. However, installing linux and using it also holds other advantages. Perl, Apache, and other popular GNU tools come with any Linux distibution are also hot skill sets to have. Perl alone, it worth the time to sit down and learn since just about every company uses it.
Although, Linux by far is my favorite OS, and KDE is my favorite Window Manager (Of any OS). However, there is no good REAL WORLD graphical browser for Linux. Ya, Lynx is the best in text, and the best of any browser, but many pages will reject text only browsers. Netscape sucks. On my end, the Java is still slow, crash prone, and does not work right half the time. Opera for Win32 is nice. Its fast and does everything the other do, but its not out for Linux yet. IE is good, but it does not work in Linux. Modzilla looks good, but still is beta (Does the Java work?). Everything else does not hold up, not even the KDE built in one (No Java). What Linux needs is a real browser. Right now it looks likes Modzilla and Opera are the two up and coming browsers. I wish IE would be ported, but that ain't never going to happen.
Now I can make commerical quality p0rn at home with my Linux box (No pun intended!). I just bet this is what Linus was thinking when he started making Linux!
However, on a serious note, this is cool. Now if I could get Quake3 to give me a serious Frame Rate, I would *finally* be happy.
I agree with the guy. Now I am anti-stupid as much as the next Slashdot reader, but he as a point. Online Casinos give a percent of customer gambling to the credit card companies. Of course, that is how credit card companies make their money, but this should not be done with CC's and gambling. Although it sounds like he lacked alittle discipline it also sounds like the credit companies seem to encourage this activity. One another point who in the hell spends money at online casino!?!? I mean, if I am not tanked off free booze by the time I am behind $10, I know it is time to quit (Ya, I am cheap!)
Although under the title of stupid laws, I think some of them are good. Here are a few:
Chico, Ca
Detonating a nuclear device within the city limits results in a $500 fine.
Hey. don't know about you, but sounds like a good one to me. Although, fining someone is the last of my conserns if a Nuclear Device is detonated in a town where I live in!
Pasadena, Ca
It is illegal for a secretary to be alone in a room with her boss.
Hey, I don't think should be in Pasadena, but the Whitehouse!

It is considered an offense to piss in your neighbor's mouth.
Hey, sounds good to me. But what about the rest of the neighbor? Can I piss on him as long as no contents of my piss enter his mouth?
England
All English Men over 14 are meant to carry out 2 hours (or so) of longbow practice a week supervised by the local clergy.
No wonder England does not have a problem with guns! They do drive-by Archery!
What happen to the Turkish Linux Group seems to be a common problem. When I started my college LUG (Chico State Linux Users' Group) there was a big debate on whether to charge a membership fee. After a slightly heated debate raged, it was decided that a membership fee would not be required to be in the club or get help. Now with the benifit of hind sight, I think this was the best idea. No one feels imposed to give monies they might now have or spend in a LUG. We still help people, and it FREE! Just remember, how much did you pay for your Linux?
College LUG's have the same problem as Third World LUG's (Mexico and Turkey come to mind). Members are not going to give monies in enough quanitities to make a BIG impact in the LUG. The real strenght in these LUGs is the desire of the members to work to make the club fun, and helpful. If any LUG depends on money before they get enough members to help out, then it is going to fail.
What the Turkey LUG needs to do before they start demanding money from its members is listed below. 1) Ask for members of the club to help out in various areas. If only a handful run and work for the club, then the LUG will fail. 2) Re-Organize the club. There could persons in the power postions that are simply there to fluffy a resume, or love being in charge and telling others what to do (Power Effect). 3) Re-Organize the structure of the club. The design of the club might not be right for its members or the culture of the area. 4) Go after companies to help out. Our LUG has been very successful with getting companies to send CDROMs, books, and other items that us college people can't afford. 5) Find people out in the local population that need Linux help. This is a great way for people to feel good about helping non-profit groups with Linux. Word gets out how much of great people you are. Companies dig that. Damn, I have more, but I got to split to Stats!

Maybe Netscape will be able to turn the tide of IE if it is the only browser that is 128bit in the Non-US market.
Of course, the Non-US made browsers already are going to have 128Bit Encryption in them. How long until IE is 128Bit is exportable?
