Well, I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't mean it to sound snotty or anything. Just the way I feel... Console games have destroyed the market for gaming. In my opinion. Never liked 'em, never will.
Be that as it may.... I thought F.E.A.R was awesome, but I'm really bummed that I won't get to play F.E.A.R. 2. Why? Simple: Steam.
Steam is simply a steaming POS. I got totally screwed on HL2 and vowed to never given them a single penny of mine again. Ever. So... no FEAR for me.
There is no excuse on this earth why a single player game should REQUIRE an internet connection in order to play and load it. There is no defense for steam (other than the same ones used for DRM and greed) and I just can't support the idea that game sellers think they own my PC. Sorry, but that's it.
As for FEAR 2 well... bummer for me that I can't play it, but whatever.
Steam is a Steaming POS. I got nailed when I purchased Half Life 2, thinking that while I was on my business trip, I could play when I wasn't working.
WRONG! Many frustrating hours later, I discovered that their servers were down that I needed an internet connection to install and play the game that I had gone to the store and paid for.
Tech support? From Steam? You have got to be kidding. The only thing they're good at is banning people. Even the polite ones.
Congratulations, they got my money for that game. A game that I never was able to finish because of online checks and updates. However, I've never bought another thing from them again, and I have no plans to.
DRM serves no useful purpose. Other than to let managers who know nothing about computers feel good about themselves.
The only time I use a MS format is when I have to send the document to someone who doesn't use Open Office. All my personal docs (and there are quite a few, since I write for a hobby) are in OO format or txt. MS format takes up a HUGE amount of space...
So, when I ordered a laptop from Dell over the summer, they refused to give me XP pro with the machine. So, I, of course, used an old version of XP on it and all was good.
So, I just called Dell, and asked them to upgrade from Vista to XP, and, believe it or not, they actually did. For free.
Just a wee bit tired of the "American workers are over priced and stupid" rant.
Anyone ever taken a look at what a CEO makes? At what the upper management makes? The tens of MILLIONS of dollars they pull in? And you're bitching about people who make less than 6 figures?
These assholes in upper management are supposed to be steering the ship. And they are -- right into money rich waters for THEMSELVES. They never give a thought about the future of the company. Never give a thought to anything but lining their own fucking pockets and moving on to the next feeding ground while leaving the rest of the people working in the company in the position of getting laid off, or accepting round after round of benefit and pay cuts with less and less opportunity to advance -- or even maintain -- their positions every year.
... big corps have whored it away overseas. Stick to plumbing or being an electrician. At least then you only have to compete against illegal immigrants.
So... interesting article. He has a few good points, especially about the level of the SciFi in Trek. However, considering that Ender's Game was about the only good book his written (admittedly IMHO), he might want to watch where he's throwing stones.
Personally, if I had to lay blame, it would be with the idiot TV execs who insist on screwing over and cancelling shows that are actually good (can you say Firefly? Farscape?)
BTW, I loved Star Trek and have read many of the books from authors he listed. I've also read a fair number of the Star Trek books -- some of which were excellent SciFi (well, some of the earlier ones, anyway). So that stereo type might not be too accurate either.
KPilot is OK. It's not great. And, if you're not careful, it does quite a bit of renaming of lables for memos, apts., etc.
As far as using a Palm w/linux? Forget it if you use the palm for anything other than a fancy address book. Unless you're a wizard with Linux -- which I am not. I do a lot of writing on my palm. For windoze, there are a number of programs that let me convert between text and palm format, and at least one really good editor (QED).
Third party is the only way to go to transfer text files on a palm. QED + QEX is a great, inexpensive, set of programs for anyone who does a lot of writing on a palm device.
I'd love to use this program, but I couldn't get filtering to work and that's very important to me. In fact, there are several entries in the mozilla bugs forum that talk about this issue, but no one's posted a fix.
I was just wondering what one would use to burn a dual layer DVD? I've got NERO 6, but since I've never considered getting a dual layer burner, I never bothered to check what software one would use to burn.
What are people useing? (those that have braved the insane dual layer prices...)
You obviously haven't a clue in the world what kind of work teaching involves. You don't get off four months in a year. You work at least 8 hours, and often far more, in a day. You deal with ignorant, irate parents who think it's your job to babysit their ignorant, bratty kids and who don't support you when you need to explain that little Jonny hasn't done homework in two months and that's why he's failing.
And I won't even go into the crap you deal with from the administration or State and Local rules.
But companys don't WANT creative programmers. That's what this whole CMM bullshit is all about. They WANT a cog in a machine that they can replace when they want - with no drop in output.
I wish you were right. But you're not. What will win in the end? Greed and power. They always do. Simply watch history. It's currently repeating itsself as Bush gives away our freedoms while American's sit and watch Oprah, waiting for her to tell them what to read.
That nice omnibus bill that was passed just reciently? Well, it gave away your overtime.
Well, I've seen suggesitons for Pater Hamilton - great stuff, especially the Reality Dysfunction series. If you want a good story, and don't mind being depressed, you can read Robin Hobb's assassin series. David Webber has some really fantastic books - not just the Honor Harrington series (Which I thought was really good). Laurel K. Hamilton has great stuff - if you like bubblegum for the brain.
Not for nothing, but if Comcrap, now that they are a complete monopoly, start capping anything (They already throttle news to 1 gig/month in my area) then they better provide software to stop FRIGGEN BANNER ADS, flash ads and ANY piece of spam from hitting my computer. Period. They want to cap stuff? Fine. I don't want to pay for things I didn't order.
They did almost the exact same thing to me a few years ago. I sold the machine days later, and will never touch one of their products again.
As long as the new TV series airs ANYWHERE but on Fox -- the SciFi Killer.
Oh, and the Enterprise would have to loose the damned 1950's car look they gave it for the movie.

I figure you're either in management, or are gonna get slapped around by reality, at which point you'll realize that you're just like those 'whiners'.

Not unless they did it this week. I got one of those "Shawn" people about two weeks ago.
