I dont think that the problem lies with bigger and badder vulnerabilities, it lies with the fact that the people who are admin'ing these servers have not paid their dues properly.

Hear me out on this one.

The industry has been so cheapened by the fact that any yahoo that can read a book can pass an MCSE exam and get a 70k/yr job doing admin work on so-called "high-end" NT servers. When in reality this is like sending a kid who just got his driver's license at 16 to run the Indy 500. No driver's license or MCSE certificate can substitute for real world experience at the helm.

And that comes out over time when you have inexperienced people out there. Common, fairly simple bugs and holes which come about through the normal life of software, become more serious when you don't have people with experience to handle them properly and do simple things like, say, remove the default configuration on software that is wide open like wu-ftpd and IIS. (Not to pick on any OS in particular, there)

I think the NIPC warning just signifies from them what most of us (/.'ers and the like) have known for quite some time, that vulnerabilities are more serious when you don't have qualified people to take care of them

I cant get to the article right now (/. effect again) but it seems that people are pissed about the whole GNU/HURD/Linux she-bang. And from what I can gather, it seems that Stallman is having the same sort of problem that organizations like PETA, The Sierra Club, etc. seem to have.

They take what would normally be a good idea, then get so worked up about it, that they alienate everyone who might have liked their idea into hating them. Cruelty to animals is wrong, however, when PETA says that animal shouldnt even be owned, leashed, or put in a zoo. When the Sierra Club tries to protect the wilderness, I'm all for that, I love to hike, bike and be outdoors. However, the wilderness is not just for the Sierra Club and its members/affiliates.

Free software is a beautiful thing, it enables software to be built not to corporate standards of obscurity, but through public standards of 'everyone checks the code, and it doesnt go out till its READY'

Just because Stallman wants GNU to be a pure/virginal thing for him to put his name on, doesnt necessarily mean that that's what WE want.

This sort of infighting that I see over stupid stuff like a NAME should stop, or it will destroy this cool thing called 'Open-Source' (I paid a royalty to JonKatz to use the term).

It took M$ almost 20 years of gluing stuff to DOS to get to the semi-stable Windows2000. Last I had heard, Linux as a whole has been stable since about '93 or so. That means that it only took 2 years to get Linux to hold up like the big corporate stuff. Now, imagine what would happen if everyone stopped bitching and started writing cool software WITH each other? There are easily a hundred times more Free software programmers than there are windows programmers, yet the industry still doesnt take our kind seriously, and this is the reason why.

Let's start working toward that common goal that hear so much about.

There are also commercially available options for owners of DVD ROM drives and legitimate DVD discs. Given the market alternatives, an exemption to benefit individuals who wish to play their DVDs on computers using the Linux operating system does not appear to be warranted.

Wow, last time I had heard, Linux/*BSD users numbered around 7-9 MILLION. That may be a fraction of the total number of PC owners out there, but let's do a little new math for a moment:

As a whole, most Linux/BSD users are at a higher level of understanding when it comes to computers, networks, the way things works, than your average windows user. Now, let's say that half of them, have a DVD player on their machine, now we're at 4 million users.

Half of those are hardcore zealots like myself who refuse to buy a DVD player or a DVD. Now we're at 2 million users.

2 MILLION users * 20-30$ per DVD = 40-60 million dollars in lost revenue, just as a minimum, not including people like me who love movies and would definitely buy more than one DVD.

The Linux contingent may be a small percentage, but I have yet to see ANY company that would ignore that amount of money in earnings, for any reason. Yet they do, and get away with doing away with consumer choice, fair use, and my right to do whatever the hell I want with something that I have purchased.

Now is the point where I write yet another letter to my congressmen asking them why they would back such a thing as the DMCA, and so CLOSE to election time no less?

Imagine this if you will, those 7-9 million users all voting for the same person who represents their opinions, and not just financial interests. Wouldnt determine a new president, but it would certainly get a LOT of peoples attention.

I get a review. My manager lauds my abilities to keep people happy and do a good job, says that I am a bit of a smart-ass at times, but not in a bad way. He then proceeds to give me a 22 CENT raise. Add 22 cents per hour to 42K/yr and what do you get? Thats right, Jack Shit.

During said review period, another contractor comes on, has very little experience, but can kiss ass in a way that is God-like. When it becomes apparent that I am not very happy with my raise, he begins to butter up said boss, and is soon hired on. He is given more money, more stock, and is basically made to be my boss. Follow me on this rant for a bit.

A drug dealer does what? They will generally give you small, low quality samples of merchandise. Then, once you are hooked, they up the quality to get you completely addicted to their merchandise. Then, if you want to get it from somewhere else, large men with baseball bats show up and make you "want" to go back to your original dealer.

The MPAA/RIAA does what? They will generally give out low quality, free samples (radio, television, etc.) You decide that you want the real thing, so you buy the CD, VHS tape, or *gasp* DVD. You then decide that you want to use your stuff in your own way, and not go through their channels, be it in the form of an mp3 file, watching your DVD on a linux box, whatever. What happens? The big boys generally don't send large men with baseball bats, they send lawyers instead.

Note to Hillary Rosen and Jack Valenti: Once something has entered my house, either in DVD/CD/broadcast form, that I have PAID FOR, you damn well better believe that its mine, and NOT yours.
