This is kind of why it's a good thing. At least this issue is getting some more news coverage now, so people know about it enough to get upset about it. It's the people's opinion that the Gillard govt. is reacting so strongly to, well that and other third party interests... but I bet at the moment they are more interested in being popular than anything else.
At least this kind of activity puts a question in the layman’s mind. "Hrmmm maybe this data retention thingy isn't such a good idea after all. I don't want my neighbours to know I'm looking at midget porn"
I use lastpass and think it's great, but for security reasons I don't let it keep my email sign on details. That way if there is ever a breach I can use the email reset features of whatever websites it has.
Call it medium-paranoid.
Unless Microsoft just drop all but the most uncomplicated software that is... There is probably a lot more money is selling people 'Windows Tablet 8' software than letting them run Office XP anyway.
You're right though, to gain any market share there will need to be some great advantage like running legacy software.
Overheard in the RIAA's offices last week:
RIAA Exec no. 1) "Those bastards, We're going to sue them for all the money in the world!"
RIAA Exec no. 2) "We can do that?"
And then promptly enacted economic reforms that caused tens of millions of deaths! Besides, it's not like some cultures want to not be part of China (*cough* Tibet. *cough* Uyghurs.).
I'm assuming from all the litigation against competitors by large U.S. technology/software firms, it is cheaper and easier for them to sue than to come up with new products and ideas for their customers.
Yes, she should have made the event private. But 16 year olds do stupid things.
I really don't think the NSW police will take the 17 year old to court over this. He'll get a slap on the wrist. The cops in NSW are the 'look like they are doing something without actually doing anything' type. As long as people can read the papers and see there is something being done it all seems to be good enough. Nothing will come from this, except a chuckle.
Different foreigner here... but I don't see how our external point of view is so different to yours (excluding how much it affects us). We get CNN, Fox, and all the other mainstream lies here too; we can also read most of the papers.
We also get added perspective.
Android already does this. When installing an app, it displays all the permissions an app can use, and you get to accept or reject the app at that point. After accepting and then installing the application you no longer get prompted. Network Access is one of the permissions that must be requested by the app.
It would be nice to have some granular control. I often install apps, which for some reason or other require internet access to begin with - but don't need it after that for any reason. There isn't an option to block an app from accessing the net once it has been granted/installed.
Correct.
I'd also like to point out that having previously worked in govt. for a number of years, the IT departments are over-staffed and under-budgeted. There might be enough people to do something about an attack, but no equipment/software/tools to know if was happening to them. I can't speak for DSD or perhaps ASIO, maybe they do.
Oh I wish I had mod-points.

Mike? Is that you?
Damn you MasseKid - for every first post statement I've ever read.
The first post. I didn't invent it, but I did get here first.
.. and therefore filed it. Congratulations, you have now earned the scorn and derision of slashdotters for infinity less one day.

Damn you Slashdot. I want to edit my spelling mistakes.
They can sit at thier desks and eat donuts.

... I thought polygamists got more than one.
$5.05 (rounded up of course) + a low frequency surcharge of $0.50
Additional speaker charges are after that. Whoa you want stereo? That'll cost you twice as much.

He was charged with using a carriage service to harass - same as if he had called her up and abuse her. Fair enough I think.
I think the point may have been the business model was old hat, not the platform. Small payments for less content. I don't agree however.

Wow! Apple vs IBM... AND Catholics vs Protestants. *grabs popcorn*

Oh they just called it that so they could say: "This plane needs a HIP replacement!"
For some of us, our smart phones already have. Why carry around two devices when I can carry one that does both jobs just as well?

I'm guessing bubble tea. It has little jelly balls in it. Very tasty.
