I"m trying to figure out the same thing right now but throw CloudStack (Citrix) into the mix. From what I can tell they are all IaaS plays with slightly different requirements and philosophies but largely using the same code. OpenStack is the big name and has the most momentum but is also quite immature and difficult to deploy although that is changing rapidly focusing on super large-scale deployments. OpenNebula is a fork of the origina Nebula with it's focus being an easy to use and deploy IaaS stack for enterprises and service providers. Cloudstack seems to fit somewhere in between. From what I can tell it's the most mature of the three in terms of deployability and use. Being a Citrix property it will play nice with XenServer and XenCloudPlatform and is already in use in some very large cloud providers around the world.

But when it comes to a technical comparison between the three, or finding information useful in helping us decide which cart to hitch our horse to, I"m at a loss. My impression is that eventually each will be its own brand on nearly identical code stacks. Kinda like OpenOffice, Libre Office and IBM's office suite are all forks of the same code base though with less fragmentation. My guess is that any real differentiation will eventually be down to packaging and proprietary add-ons like billing.

(hopefully this will kick start some real responses to your question. You see, the trick on slashdot is to ask your question in the form of an opinion. Slashdotters will only post to tell you how wrong you are)

Think about it. Do you leave your front door unlocked?

Well, as a matter of fact I do. I haven't locked my car or set the alarm in over 10 years either (I own a 2009 Audi A3 and a 2006 Honda Accord if that matters). And yes, I also leave my WiFi open. Why? Because I can.

Of course I live in a town of 2200. The next nearest town is 15 miles of country driving. The nearest StarBuck is 25 miles away. I know the first and last names and job of every person in every house within a 2 block radius of mine and I trust every one of them. There has not been a single home burglary or car theft in the 3 years I've lived here and I bet that stat goes back further. Did I mention that my 20 mile commute to the datacenter I run takes 15 minutes?

Most importantly: I do not live in fear. I feel sorry for all poor suckers that do.

Finally! Someone in this thread who actually knows something.

Everything I said about George is true except the paternal relationship, as you so correctly pointed out. I threw in the popular misconception just to see if there were any fogies left in this thread or if the'd all been driven away by the "Dean Cain is bester than the Smallvill guy" drivel.

Thanks for restoring my /. faith.

What are you talking about? Of course people knew who Chirstopher Reeves was. Have you never seen the original Superman TV series with George Reeves? He was the original, everyone knew him (and his problems, but that's another story) and most of the world was very happy when his son, Christopher, was chosen to carry on the legacy on the silver screen. George was and still is the best Superman.

I have to agree with a previous poster, you /.'ers are getting too effing young.
