  1. The StrudleZone on Finding the Programming Zone? · · Score: 1

Many slashdotter's have referenced their environment (dark, quiet, your own chair, your own machine, etc..), and these are very important. But the problem is, after a few days at your new job, or in your new office, you've already got these things set up and you're still not in the 'zone' from 8 to 5.

Mental preparations need to be in place if you really want to achieve something. I start out my day with a healthy dose of slashdot. Read about techy things, read up on the latest programming project, get those wheels spinning. And then take 5 minutes, grab a random piece of code, and optimize it. I find that the moment that I pull off something clever, I'm in the Zone.

Also, once you get to the zone, leave it often. Smokes work great here. Hit a snag? Run into a road block? PHB's getting you down? Take 5 minutes and have a smoke. 5 minutes away from your computer, staring at something other than your code, often free's the mind up. Leaving the cubicle helps you 'think outside the cubicle'. And that my friends, is where the Zone is.

You should read up on Extreme Programming, in particular Code Refactoring. It's a method of cleaning up old code. A very well written book, as well as an excellent code-housekeeping method.

  10. Re:Anything Python can do that PHP can't? on PHP 4.1.0 Released · · Score: 0

PHP is great for web-apps, definatly. I use it exclusivly. But Python is much more flexible. It is an excellent language for the web, but beyond that you can pretty much write anything you want in python(aside from Kernels and device drivers). If you're sticking with web programming, stick with PHP. But if you have any interest in writing stand-alone apps or system scripts, take a good look at python.

  11. Take it from an ex employee.... on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 1, Informative
I learned a few things over the 3 years that I worked as a packer for UPS:
    1. Fragile means nothing. There is no effort made by the packers or their supervisors to treat fragile as fragile. Their thinking is that 'Fragile' is a buzzword that clients put on everything.
    2. Shipping via ground spells certain doom for most packages. Since most packages are shipped ground, there is always too much work, and not enough employees. This business works on a scheduale the push through all packages, regardless of how many, into the standard 4 hour shift.
    3. Avoid shipping during the holidays. Wait until the day after to send your package. The drop in volume is incredible, and raises your chances of a sucessful delivery
    4. Keep your packages under 30 pounds or over 70. Lighter packages are treated better, while heavier packages are pushed, kicked, and dropped into position(by the lazy teamsters workers). Packages over 70 pounds bypass most standards forms of delivery, and get special treatment. Those packages are also usually tended to by workers with more seniority, people who know how to handle packages quickly without damaging them
    5. There will always be somthing heavier on top of your package! Support your boxes with wood beams, or make sure that they are so tightly packed and padded that nothing moves.
    6. Put 'this-end-up' arrows all over the box(in the same direction you freaks!). Employees can and do get written up for not obeying those orders. Trust me, I know
    7. And to reinforce the popular opinion: always insure what you can't afford to lose.
