empty vacuous shell of it's old self. Having been a reader of Malda's old Chips and Dip site for Window Maker themes then became Slashdot, the technical news about Linux, the various BSDs, UNIX(s) and underlying technologies have been replaced with this whiney PC (not Personal Computers) crap. And the submitter of this idiotic topic "Soulskill" reminds me of Jon Kats. Sadly I rarely visit slashdot anymore. Others sites like http://www.shiningsilence.com/dbsdlog/ or http://undeadly.org/ still have value. R.I.P/.
Huh, you're comparing a Sun model introduced in 1998? Try to stay current and look at the Sun Fire V880, it's quite comprable in price to a Dell xeon box-- only it will scale a lot better on not be limmitted by 4GB which is an issue if you're using a relational database.
"Sun's pissed that they can't run multiple instances of an OS on their E15K systems. "
Hello? You obviously have never used an E15K or even a E10K with *does* domains for over 5 years now. Want some companies who use this? Ebay for one done. And they would be crazy to use Linux on it.
You have this backwards. I would rather have the Linux userland choices and the highly regarded FreeBSD kernel with top notch VM and TCP/IP stack. Especially after the Linux kernel 2.4.10 VM changes-- what a sorry excuse for a kernel.
Err, you could get the source to Solaris and also obtain a free ISO-- if you free inclinded to do so. So are you stating that Solaris must receive the OSS(tm) branding in order to "survive"? Few point:
(1) Solaris are a vast amount of 3rd party developers and software that is well optimized
(2) For those of us the use Solaris on big boxes, Linux with it broken scheduler doesn't even touch the scalablitiy of Solaris.
(3) get a clue!
"No - no GNU tools were included" -- Well then, it must be my imagination that my disks Solaris 8 Software medis pack from Sun- disk 1 and 2 from 10/00 are a figment of my imagination.
As if you like running a 32 bit version of Oracle, be my guest. Oracle/SPARC runs like a dream.
As for Dell with Linux? We have the same Dell Server w/ 8GB RAM and a Quad Xeon running RedHat 7.1... Under heavy load, the VM on Linux is just crap. The Informatics crew is constantly rebooting the box as is start to swap like crazy. The 2.4.x series of the kernel is not acceptable as is ! Read the Linux kernel lists for more detail before you start spoutting of like a clueless linux newbie demanding a pretty GUI to admin Solaris on a E450.
Now if you want to pay 80K for an E450-- be my guess. Just look at auctions.sun.com on ebay-- you could get an E450 for 25K.
Well, if you've used Solaris 8, it would be apparent to you that:
-Gnu tools ARE included, including compilers, etc.
-Mirror can be done with a free VM called Disksuite-- not the greatest but still better than LVM.
And if you have a clue about H/W, E450 just puts to shame the crap of a server, Dell 6450.
And finally, by insisting for a desktop env. running on the E450, perhaps you should stick to your MCSE certification courses. The E450 is a server meant for those who know UNIX, vi, and the/etc config files.
In hope of educating you, consider this. Sun and it's founders: vi, Virtual File System, NFS, Java, etc...
Now people take issue with HP for a valid reason.... During the mid 90s, HP spat on their HP-UX division in favour of being a strong NT supporter. It is *true* during this period that Sun was the only major vendor that stuck by UNIX.
We also have serveral Filers (~14TB) consisting of Network Appliance and Auspex where I work in the Valley. I don't believe you will be tempted to consider Linux as a Filer since NFS is STILL very broken as of 2.4.4 series.
"Sun, in their infinite wisdom, hasn't gotten around to including a journaling file system or logical volume management into their OS."
Bzzt, NEXT! I do hope/. readers do take information here with a regard it deserves.. in this case, bodly >/dev/null.
(1) UFS does support journaling-- it logs metadata and one can enable it with the mount options in/etc/vfstab "logging"
(2) Disksuite is a free Volume Manager that does various levels of RAID. It works however if you're using a large clustering environment, VxVM is recommended by Sun.
I do both env. and like Linux since 95 however posting this mis-information does little for the redibility of the Linux Community.
Whatever,
patster
Sheesh! Irrespective of the degree of harassment kids experience at school, it's quite sad to constantly read about Jon Katz's apologetic article of the perpertators. Hello, life is not a big Doom game... These idiots who act out either by promoting this notion of violence are in serious need of councelling!
Jon, get a clue... it time to forgive all the bit*h slaps you recieved in high school and get on with your life.
Ha, You mean the same Rose Bowl that the UBC Engineers took from University of Washington a few years ago?
Sorry, but the CalTech pranks just don't rank in comparison. Thanks for you tired stories.

Windows XP is bug free? What kind of crack have you been smoking?
$7,500,000 and 10Tb? Check your prices and specs... In fact your orders of magnitude over the price for a discontinued model.
I have been trained on it and I can state that the isonation between domains works very well on an E10K. Clustering and E10K work well together.

Allright? Who mod'ed this clown to 2 with his unsubstantiated "KDE is just technically waaaay ahead of GNOME"????
"Every Way"---- Let's see... you're comparing a mature 64 bit arch with a 32 bit POS????
Shame that what was clueless NT "Admins" are now advocating Linux... another reason why I'm happy using FreeBSD on x86.
Well if this is the most important criteria, then he should be using Windows :-)
BTW, FreeBSD H/W support is quite good since many Linux drivers are open sourced.

Actually, historians tend to vote republican and Political Scientist vote democrat (the idealist).
:-)
so, if you have a clue, you would be a republican
