It is an insult to both pigs and slop to be compared to Jersey Shore.
The sad thing is not only are you right, but I watch several channels wondering in the back of my head "Hey, this is pretty good. How long before someone screws it up?"
Mtv has a sister station called Palladia that actually shows music and concerts. There's no on air personalities or abrasive VJ's. No off subject documentaries, game shows, Real World, Jersey Shore, or any of the other stupid crap Mtv has done on it's flagship channel. They aren't perfect (too many re-runs) but it's light years better than Mtv.
So I guess the clock is ticking on "how long can it last?"
TLC (remember when it was called The Learning Channel?) shows nothing but Kate Plus Eight and Cake Boss crap. "Learning"?
A&E used to show high-brow Art content. Now it's "Dog the Bounty Hunter"
In 5 years many of these channels will be dead as people are canceling cable in favor of streaming services like Hulu and Netflix.
>>"You have a naive belief.." no, I simply voice my frustrations. I'm certain BBC:A is showing BSG because it was an affordable piece of syndication to fill a programming slot. But I would still prefer if they were to show syndicated content or reruns that they would be British.
Let's put it this way: The original "The A-Team" TV series was extremely successful ratings wise in the UK. Perhaps even more than it was in America. But I don't want to see it on BBC America. Same for "Baywatch" - more successful internationally than in the US. But I also don't want it on BBC:A
>> "...which is from all the reports I've seen a *much* better channel than SyFy is in the US."
That's a low bar. If you had "The Moose Channel" (Deer not allowed, eh) that would be a better channel than SyFy. If you had a channel called "Bacon" for bacon enthusiasts that would be better than SyFy.
On the other hand if Space is a good station I wish we could get it here. Exiled SyFy viewers need a new home.
>> "Any episode of these TV shows: Star Trek (all series), Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Stargate (I liked 'em all), BSG (sure both eras, why not), Firefly, etc. Movies: Star Wars (all 6), Star Trek (40 now?), Blade Runner, Serenity, The Day the Earth Stood Still (original please), old Japanese monster movies, all the comic based flicks, etc."
Most of what you've listed is on Netflix or in the case of Trek it soon will be. 8 bucks a month. Look into it.
Why do I need BSG on BBC America? I don't want them to show American series. I want interesting British programming that I might not have seen otherwise. I thought that was the whole point to the channel.
I can turn on Spike or any number of cable channels that are re-run mills.
SyFy blows. WWE and Ghost Hunters crap. I'd love to see a new station with content like it's Science Fiction Channel days.
Hubble didn't work out of the box. From the moment it was deployed there was a spacewalk to unfold one of it's solar panels. Then there was a famous 'set of glasses' fix to it's optics. There have been hardware upgrades and gyroscope fixes.
It takes only one small glitch for this to be an expensive piece of space junk. It would kill any future space telescope in the process.
It will be interesting to see what unions have to say about this innovation. Clay body knockers are union members and this would effectively eliminate many their jobs.
>> "So a national broadcaster should make sure that it passes the muster in all of the areas it broadcasts to, shouldn't it?"
No, it shouldn't. There are communities in America were religion defines the community. They don't get to tell me what's OK for TV.
There are people take offense to everything produced after the 50's B&W Leave it to Beaver era of TV. You might recall there was a time you couldn't say 'pregnant' on television. People said words like "Gosh" and "Golly" when they were upset.
There was a time you couldn't show a condom, or talk about how to avoid AIDs. You couldn't speak honestly on television about politics or social change.
When the uncensored video of 9/11 was shown on TV there were people more offended by the swear words being shouted by firefighters than the tragic events of that day.
Nope. Free speech, drama, comedy, history, social commentary, health advice, etc... should not be held hostage by society's most uptight. If they don't like what's on TV, there's no legal requirement for them to own one.
I get sick of the "but kids could see that!" There are lots of kid safe channels for my kids to watch. I have extended cable, Netflix, On Demand, and a pretty decent collection of my kids favorites on video.
I wonder why it's less offensive to depict someone dying in a violent act than seeing a bit of anatomy? Shooting a woman in the chest gets a PG rating, but kissing her on the chest gets an R rating.
Ah, so you attack me, and immediate list your actions to prove how morally superior you are to me. Since you don't know me, you simply assume I'm some right wing shill just because I think CFLs suck. I must be oblivious to the byproducts on energy production (off-topic) just because I commented on light bulbs (on-topic).
Yes, you've got my number. I eagerly hope the world my two young daughters someday inherit is a toxic chemical stew. I want dirty air, soil, water, and I want my children to live in it./sarcasm
So I hope you'll excuse me if I return the favor to you. Since you are getting such exceptional lifespans from your light bulbs it would seem you have new wiring and likely a newer home. You've helped contribute to urban sprawl by buying a new house instead of an existing house an performing upgrades as I did. Hence you're likely living on land that was recently in a natural state until it was developed into another cookie cutter suburbia.
See, I can play the high and mighty game too! Dick.
If I buy a 60w incandescent bulb I know it's going to be pretty much the same as the last one. The CFLs are all over the place. Most people don't want to read consumer reports to replace a fscking light bulb. They just want it to work.
Alta's suggestion about buying LEDs is far more useful.
You assumption is wrong. I'm not buying crappy lights.
I can't help but notice it takes three bulbs to light a room when two used to do the job nicely. I think that's going to nullify much of the energy saving goals over time. I wonder how many people have added a new lamp or two in the house after converting to new bulbs?
I care about the planet as much as the next guy, but I really hate florescent bulbs. I've used enough of them in my house that I know they don't last longer, despite claims. Often they take time to come up to full brightness. The color temperature they add to a room is a dingy yellow, so they give off an unpleasant light.
Last and most importantly, most people don't know how to dispose of them properly, and many communities do not have a disposal strategy. I'm concerned that the long term downside of mercury in the soil and water table outweigh the energy savings.
They'll push the idea to Joe Sixpack that HDDs are messy and prone to failure, he would be better off trusting his data to the cloud. Facebook and countless image hosting solutions now offer you free online photo album and video storage. Online data backup storage is sold for an annual fee. The lemmings have already begun to trust online storage. Cheap portable devices are another step down the road to consumers living in a thin client world.
If you can get people to surrender storing their own files you truly control their data. HDD storage will become an enterprise solution and demand higher prices. Law enforcement, MPAA, RIAA will have an easier time getting permission to search people's files.
Serves me right for going from memory. Fistful of Quarters is the subtitle for King of Kong. "Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade" is another film that came out around the same time.
Chasing Ghosts is every bit as entertaining without trying to turn Billy Mitchell into a villain. He's perhaps a bit cynical, but as I pointed out he had seen some players attempt to steal records. He helps Walter in this film to document and verify several records. He speaks of some of his own former records, which he held several besides Donkey Kong. He's not spiteful about those records falling as he looks like this is all part of the sport. He probably intents to reclaim those records at some point in the future.
I would expect Steve Wiebe tenure as record holder will be short.
Billy Mitchell is probably no saint, but another film put the lie to the creative license practiced for the "King of Kong" filmmakers. "A Fistfull of Quarters" features several of the same Twin Galaxies regulars and is a more balanced film.
Billy Mitchell, mullet and all, is there helping Walter research and document world records. Mitchell comes off as someone who's seen cheating and attempts to steal fifteen minutes of glory (in fact FFoQ tells one such story) Made before King of Kong it does not feature Steve Wiebe.

Seriously, can we get an edit button?
There's a black cat caught in a high tree top
Capricorn one is more thriller than sci-fi.
And aside from a couple of classics, the list focuses on well known fairly recent films. Most people under 30 haven't seen Capricorn One.
I'd like to join that bonfire and bring along the phases "software", "Operation System", and "User Interface"
