Debian is a decentralized, global, volunteer-run organization. Anyone can organize a BSP. There is no "they" that you can speak of so uniformly. I do imagine however (though I do not know for sure since I am not a Debian developer) that Debian conferences are held outside of the U.S. because of incidents like this.

And I would be surprised if this prediction is even remotely accurate. Do you use Facebook? It is increasingly becoming the only website you need to keep in touch with your contacts/friends and it is the only website that I have ever encountered that actually makes Google search engine less relevant. My friends no longer tell me to "Google" something that comes up in a conversation. They just post the link with a description of why they might like it to their profiles.

Last but not least: they have done a really, really nice job with the website. As far as Web 2.0 apps go, I would put facebook second only to gmail.

Having a good reputation among the slashdot crowd may be more important than you think. Oracle's name is quickly becoming mud in the minds of of a lot of developers, and while in the short term that may mean little to them, it will probably bite them in the ass down the road. Developers may not make purchasing decisions for the kinds of large companies that purchase Oracle's products, but they make do make technical ones, and they also advise the people who make those purchasing decisions.

Teachers are being paid to teach. They are not being paid to create lesson plans. I am not a full time teacher, but I have taught, and I can tell you that when I do I regularly use lesson plans that I have created at previous schools or in my free time when I not working for anyone (but know I will be teaching again someday down the line). And, yes, sometimes I have even downloaded plans off of the web. How could a school I teach at claim ownership over this work? In my mind this would be like club owners claiming to own the rights to any music that is played at their venues.

I agree. When the government bails a company out, it shouldn't be a joyride. It should be more like when the cleaner is called in during a bad gangster movie. The situation is fixed, but everyone involved in making it a situation in the first place is eliminated.
