Personally, I have no problem with Windows as a "recreational" OS for playing games and such. I dislike the company that makes it, and I despise thier business practices, but the OS is not evil in and of itself.

  4. can Perl fit on a floppy? on REBOL the "Messaging Language" · · Score: 1

I like the fact that it runs on many platforms, and that the executable is small.

So I can fit the Linux, winNT and win98 executables all one one floppy, and my scripts, too, so I can run them on any machine I need to (those are all the OS's we use at work) all from the same floppy, with no istallation of the lanquage on the local computer needed? (it stays on the floppy with the scripts)

I think that's cool. usefull, at least.

But I really don't want to learn a new language.. I'm still learning Perl (does anyone ever STOP learning perl?) and Perl is already on the Linux machines.. so:

Is there a Perl for Win98/NT that will fit on a floppy?

My activestate 514 installation on win98 is a total of 15 MB, the bin folder 1.4 MB.

Anyone know the minimum I need? That would be cool to have a Mostly complete Perl in my pocket on a floppy. It would make things easier when I work on Win32 machines...

It's a good book, and very informative. I spent all last night fooling with Perl/Tk, and searching the web for good online introductory material. It was slim pickins, let me tell ya.

I got more done after spending 20 minutes reading the book than I did with 4 hours of searching and trial and error.

Combine Perl/Tk with perl2exe, and who needs VB? Now my exact same Perl/Tk program can run on Linux or Win32, and if they don't have Perl installed, I just perl2exe it!

    COLLEGE IS FOR SUCKS

Everything I know about computers I have taught myself, starting with TRS-80 BASIC back in 1980 when I was 10 years old.

Especially today, with the free flow if information on the internet, it is easy to teach yourself.

Then get a job. You say you need a college degree for this. Only if you have NO people skills. Or if you want to work at MS or some other big company. If you can talk someone into giving you a job, THEN you have EXPERIENCE. one you have experience, your next job is in the bag.

Granted, if you want to work at a big comapany and be a slave to the man, you DO need a college degree. But there are plenty of ways to make $$ in computers without having to work 9-5, wear a tie, answer to a boss who has no clue, etc...

To those of you who DO have college degrees in a computer-related field -- how much of what you learned in class do you actually USE? And how much of what you learned on your own do you use?

Anyway. I hated college, for many of the reason stated at length by previous posters. I dropped out, taught myself what I needed/wanted to know, and now I make a great living in the computer field, and things are looking better every day. I work my own hours, I take the clients that *I* want to take, and I wear jeans and sandals to the office.

There are so MANY jobs in the computer field, and so MANY people (most w/ degrees) that have NO CLUE what they are doing, that anyone who does have a clue, degree or not, can get hired.

    --just my two cents.

I love Linux at work. The box sits in the corner and never gives me any grief. No complaints, no problems. Just work work work all day long.

NT I have to re-boot and generally be more "hands-on"

But at home, I wanna do two things: Play games (quake II) and watch the porn I download from newsgroups. Linux doesn't support many games, and though it runs quakeII, not with GL support. I don't work on it, I PLAY on it.

Linux is a great OS. But it's gonna be AT LEAST a year, probably more, until it becomes a decent RECREATIONAL machine as well as the solid workhorse it already is.

And let's face it, Microsoft has brought computing to the masses. If it wasn't for the fact that hundreds of thousands of people bought their first computer this year, and over 1/2 of american homes now have one, how many of us would have jobs? I wouldn't. A website needs an audience.

My first computer was a TRS-80 model II. It had 4K of RAM and a regular cassette deck to load the programs in OFF A CASSETTE TAPE! we had to UPGRADE to 16K (K!!) to get a floppy drive. That was 1980.
