PPM sucks - what the hell is wrong with compiling modules when it's a programming tool for crying out loud?
Dude, PPM RULES! I can download and install a Perl module in SECONDS. If I had to compile it on my NT server machine I would:
a) have to get a C compiler b) take the time to learn to use the C compiler c) get the code and makefiles and complile it.
Not all Perl programmer are C programmer, too. Many of us are web designers, forced to use NT/IIS instead of Linux/Apache, and Perl saves us our sanity.
I don't particularly trust ActiveState and don't have a great appreciation for their work with perl on Windows (it doesn't compare to perl on Unix as you can't generally download any perl module source code and compile it into your perl installation).
yes! exactly. I want a little bitty laptop with a built in cellmodem.
I was SO CLOSE to getting a Libretto.
I figure 2 years until my criteria are met.

OpenGL support whoo hoo!

"Precision Insight has been provided with funding and support from Red Hat and SGI to integrate the GLX extension for 3D rendering in an X11 window. The 3D core rendering component is the Mesa library. SGI has released the sources to the extension framework under an open license, which essentially provides the glue system. Precision Insight has integrated these components into this XFree86 X Server and added a Direct Rendering Infrastructure. Direct Rendering provides a highly optimized path for sending 3D data directly to the graphics hardware. This release demonstrates a sample implementation of direct rendering by providing a single path of 3D hardware accelerated rendering for the GMX2000 graphics card. Future releases will support much broader implementations of hardware accelerated direct rendering on a wide range of 3D capable graphics devices."
If they support OpenGL for my card (i740) half as well as it is supported under Win98, then I don't have to boot into Windows to play Quake anymore!
Wheee!
I heard the dude (too buzzed to remeber his name) from XFree86 talk about 4.0 at the LinuxWorldExpo and I have been very excited ever since. True type font support (tho I already got that set up, and they will be using the same thing (xfsft and FreeType)) plus more OpenGL and Multi-head support.
Then if KDE comes out with a great 2.0 (Especially with high color icons) w/ a better looking widget set, then the future indeed looks bright for Linux on the desktop. (I like GNOME, it looks way better than KDE, but it just doesn't seem to work as well at this point (except for it's file manager, which is way faster than kfm))
alright.. i'll stop with my drunken ramblings.. but DAMMIT, I'M EXCITED!
I want a handheld internet appliance that connects to the internet, allows web browsing, email, and most importantly (secure) telnet. And with a built in modem w/ built in cell phone (or digital, or whatever works) and no wires - one complete unit. (I can live with 14.4 kbps - more would be nice, but ya know...)
and plays simple games on the plane. MP3 would be nice
at least 16MB of RAM. color screen (256 colors is OK)
I'd be willing to accept a minimum of 24 hour battery life, IF there was a nice "recharger-cradle" that I could put it in at home before I go to bed every night. But it's still got to stay charged over a weekend trip... (tho not constantly on)
and I want it for under $300.
Jeeze, you can get a full blown 350MhZ Linux machine for $199 these days! (or soon, as the press releases say)
I know this doesn't exist yet. But I wont be buying a PDA until it meets these criteria.
Is it just me or does GL sound really defensive in this peice?
Has anyone else noticed this:
Try to go buy star wars action figures. What's the only figure you can find? Jar Jar.
Seems to me that everyone thought Jar Jar would be the big seller, but no one wants him. Everyone wants Darth Maul instead. Just try and find him. (marketing guy freaking out : "They want the BAD guy? The BAD guy? No they don't. deep down they really want the cute, loveable Jar Jar Binks. They just don't know it yet") eat me dude.
I'd buy Jar JAr just to blow him up (wher'd I put that M80?)
I mean how many people out there are actually gonna go out and spend $50 on RedHat x.x compared to the number who will dl of the net, or get a cheap CD?
Buisiness will buy it. And, even though they only have to buy one copy, and use that one copy on each of 1000 computers, businesses will still buy 1000 copies, one for each computer.
Why? You got me. But they will, and do. I guess it helps them sleep better at night or something.
And Red Hat is supposed to be targeting business, right?
Also, I was in the bookstore the other day, and ran into a guy that had RedHat6.0 in his hand, for $80, and I said, "You know you can get that for $1.99 at cheapbytes.com. It's the same exact thing" and he said "Yeah, but I need the documentation and phone support"
Come on. Is the support and docs really worth $78?
I bought my first Linux distro at the store, too (but my boss paid for it), so I guess I can't really talk.
People new to Open SOurce are trained to BUY STUFF and PAY FULL PRICE. They like to have the box. Go figure.
They USED to refuse.... and still set up GNOME by default (not like they paid for it or anything..:-) Mandrake sets up KDE by default, and came with the "real" 1.1.1 instead of the 1.1.1pre
I like mandrake. x11amp actually worked right out of the box.
I was hoping to read about the real, nitty gritty differences between the two, like:
"Well, FreeBSD handles network configuration This Way and Linux does it This Way"
I have never used a BSD, or even seen one in action. I have been using Linux for a year now and was really hoping to learn what BSD was all about, specifically what it does better than Linux.
The author seems to have a attitude that Linux will train the newbies who will then "Step Up" to a BSD, but he really gives me no reason to, no hints as to why a BSD would be a step up from Linux.
Anyone want to post what the BSDs do better than Linux and vice-versa?
I read on the Xfree86 site that 3.4 will include 1740 support.
I have one, and I use the XBF_i740 with no problems ('course I don't play quake on it or anything) What did you mean by sub_optimal? Because it isn't free (speech) ?
What I would like to see is OpenGL drivers for the i740 for Linux. The OpenGL drivers for my card in Windows RULE, considering it's a $50 card.
I don't know jack about OpenGL or driver programming, or I might give it a shot. I just write CGI in Perl all day. I think my longest script is 100 lines...
I am a musician (not signed yet) and I know LOTS of musicians, signed and unsigned, gold records, no records, etc... and not a single musician I know has any complaint about MP3s of thier stuff getting passed around.
actually, B&W movies DO SUCK!
but really.. tried playing Command and Conquer on the Playstaion? You can't even tell the units apart, let alone read the text..

Now THAT will be cool.
not because I wanna playstation.
because I wanna surf the web from my couch with a wireless keyboard - could do it now except for that crappy TV resolution!

When was the last time you got your playstation to 1024 x 768 full on OpenGL in Quake?
TV resolution sucks.
RTS games suck with a gamepad.

Then send you user name/pass to me! I will use it.
I am VERY EAGER to get in on this IPO. I opened an account at ETrade just for this IPO.
I've been using RedHat for awhile (though I use Mandrake in my main machine right now) and I think this IPO is gonna go thru the roof!

"Maybe if Microsoft didn't break its old file formats and introduce new ones every rev then people wouldn't upgrade as much."
But if "people wouldn't upgrade as much" then MS makes less money... And we wouldn't want that, now would we?
This is the major problem with proprietary software. Companies do things that are good for the bottom line, not good for the consumer.

It's 1.0. That means it's officially released, non-beta, supposedly stable, right?
so why is my hard drive littered with CORE files?
I like Gnome alot. But I will continue to use KDE until Gnome gets a little more reliable. (which I hope is soon)

Linux Mandrake ROCKS!
I like it alot.
I highly reccomend it.
I have RedHat6.0 on one box, and Mandrake 6.0 on another.
Besides differences in KDE (Mandrake's is better, it includeds the Theme Manager), X11amp actually WORKS in Mandrake.
That's the only difference I have noticed, but I am not exactly a "power user"
P.S. My Quake 2/3 servers on RedHat 6.0 run just fine....
