  1. Re:Metric Everywhere on Astronauts Having Trouble With Tranquility Module · · Score: 1

I think the better system depends on the context in which it is used. Measurements with units that break down into nice fractions are convenient for baking (I'm a baker) and for cooking generally. Woodworking is also made easier by fractions like a third, quarter, or eighth. And while I like the idea of having a standard system, perhaps it should be done per industry, rather than across all industries in all countries.

It can be disagreed, that creators ought to retain creative control of their products. I also think art as an industry would be better off if this were the case -- again, rational people can disagree. A company can leverage their means of production & distribution over an artist if they want, and this is not only legal but common. The near ubiquity of the practice makes it a non-choice. This was the point of my first post. If anyone cares to talk about this, I'm all ears. But I haven't heard it yet.

No he voluntarily signed away his creations so that he could create something worthwhile. I think this is neither necessary nor a proper way to do business. But the sarcasm was cute.

"It's pure theft..." but when Disney takes the creation of Steven Lisberger, that's ok, because they own that, so it's not really theft. Corporations have "intellectual property" because they have buying power. Apparently the artists they hire have no intelligence, because they sell their creativity rights for the access to the medium.

  5. Re:Free will is.... on If We Have Free Will, Then So Do Electrons · · Score: 1

I think I understand what you mean, and if I'm reading you correctly then I'm in agreement. Our concept of free will is entirely subjective. It requires the active process of a consciousness, which is why electrons don't have it. It's the ability to understand information and act on it intentionally, regardless of external forces. Saying choice doesn't exist because it's determined, and concluding that there is no free will, is like pulling a fish out of the water and concluding that fish don't breath because the fish can't breath out of the water.

  6. Re:Boxee is not like RSS in a browser on Hulu Again Removed From Boxee and Again Added Back · · Score: 1

Hulu is actually being pressured by the content owners to stop Boxee because there is less advertising revenue from web streaming than there is for live TV.

Once again profitable business becomes unprofitable because new technology makes it obsolete. And all the businessmen can do is cry foul. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
