Thank you! I was looking over the comments people have posted about the other CDs on that list, and of course, realized that most people probably have never even heard of G3, the tour. The G3 show w/ Petrucci was an incredible show -- Everyone who saw the G3 show w/ Petrucci should get his solo disc Suspended Animation right away (indy label).

For DVD stuff, Tivo need a CSS license (no, Tivo can't use DeCSS). For a CSS license, they needed Macrovision. For Macrovision, they needed this.

Guess what Tivo needed to do to get T2G functionality?

  9. Re:Driving Sales! on TiVo OS Update Adds Content Protection · · Score: 1

Because, if you actually followed some of the links here (I know, asking too much already), you will see that it is because Tivo (the company) would like to keep Tivo (the hardware) being able to operate. If Tivo want's to keep its Macrovision license (in other words, if Tivo wants the unit to be functional), they had to add this 'feature'.

The fact that the flag was picked up is a bug in how Tivo is handling a noisy over-the-air analog signal. The signal source here was coming from a noisy antenna that trigged the signal. It is only supposed to be for 'premium' content.

I see many people dual booting their machines. Look at how many Linux people keep their machines dual-booted for games, or [insert use here]. Now look at how many people don't use linux because its "too hard to use". Now, look at how many people would like to have a stable user-friendly Unix box, but need windows for something.

Bittorrent was never made to be used for this purpose, making it an 'easy' target for the RIAA (the torrent trackers) while still having legitimate uses (linux distribution).

  17. Re:Why ban them? on FCC Extends Set-Top Box Deadline · · Score: 4, Informative

Its a ban from cables boxes that are not CableCard (or whatever they want to call it) enabled. It (essentially) means that instead of the cable box "decrypting" the signal AND being a tuner, it must have a seperate entity that is responsible for each of those functions. This means that other standard equiment can handle the "tuner" portion. The "decrypting" part is plugged into the tuner, just as the "decrypting" part would be plugged into a TiVo, HDTV or other standard item.

Finally, embedded programming on a cable box is worlds cruftier and more limiting than the Linux underpinnings of the current Tivo architecture. It's virtually certain that some features just won't be portable to this new box.

    From Tivo's press release

"This long-term, non-exclusive partnership will provide millions of Comcast customers with the opportunity to choose the TiVo service, including TiVo's award-winning user interface and features like Season Pass(TM) and WishList(TM), as an additional option. In addition, the service will showcase TiVo's home networking, multimedia, and broadband capabilities."

Sounds to me like they are adding most functionality. I didn't follow to much of the Wiki's links, but is is possible that the Comcast box even runs linux (or some other OS) rather than just being "embedded"?

I don't think that the speed for transfers for Tivo2Go has to do with the USB1.1 interface speed. Transfers using T2G are much slower than transfering the exact same program from 1 Tivo to another Tivo.

It might have something to do with the fact that in TivoTivo transfers, it is transfering the video in 'native' format. It probalby has to do some encoding (maybe combine audio/video stream) to transfer Tivo->PC.
