First off, i have some pics of the Athlon, Merced and G4 here. TheRegister has a lot of info on whats going on in the CPU market.
Basically: Merced has been on the brink of failure for quite a while now. The performance of the ones made so far are considerably less than those of the PII at lesser Mhz's.
The development of the Althon (aka K7 by AMD) has been quite secret. It is actually a super powerful chip and is using something like 256k cache to bring down price and still will whoop the PIII at equal Mhz (and 512 cache, in FPU benchmarks too!). Rumor has it that they will be releasing a 512k and 1mb cache intel killer Athlon shortly after debuting it at 256k. The Athlon will be using a slot A which makes sense as they have been in bed with Alpha Processors Inc., Samsung's processor company. (Those of you who still think that Digital owns API, you're mistaken as they made a deal to sell off their majority in the company to samsung). So as we see 1ghz Alphas debut without cooling you know that they are sharing that technology with AMD so the future is really bright for AMD. One nifty thing is, on the register, i saw an 8 proc. motherboard being made for the Athlon. Hello low-cost supercomputing.
Motorola, makers of the PowerPC processor line will be introducing the G4. Rumor from the mac side is that due to a dispute between Motorola and IBM, who share in the production and design of the PowerPC processor line, there will be two different versions of the G4 coming out. One, which will be made by IBM will include a special instruction set that Mac OS X can/will be optimized for that will increase 3d rendering (sorta like 3dfx from what i understand of it) wheras Motorola will make non-optimized G4s that cost much less than the IBM manufactured ones. This probably means that lower cost macs, such as the iMac will use the Motorola G4 and upper end Macs like the PowerMac will use the IBM one.
technology is like a roaring freight train with no brakes. Once a technology is out and accepted, there is no going back. and unless something better than MP3 comes out (and SDMI aint it), than MP3 isnt going anywhere.
When will corperations realize that music is art and deserves to be free? Look at great groups like phish and the grateful dead that actually encouraged bootlegging and recording at concerts and because of that their music lives on and will live on forever.
The reason, forgive me, I still use Windows 98, the epitomy of bloatware, and not linux is because windows has a driver or hardware profile for just about any device I can plug in, snap on, or wire up to a PC. Everytime I've tried to install Linux (SuSe is the exception) it doesnt recognize all my hardware/perhiperals.
Case in point, my USB Quickcam.
Sometimes, I enjoy the fact that Windows sucks up a few hundred megs to store these things so when i buy a product i know i can plug it in and (usually) it works, drivers installed right then and there.
I also think that a vast majority of regular computer users enjoy this and the idea of having to check for drivers and recompile the kernal everytime they buy some nifty PC perhiperal is what, sorry to be the devils advocate here, keeps linux from really going mainstream.
-Z
side note: of all the Linux Distros I've tried, SuSe was the only one that recognized almost all, and accurately, my hardware.
As much as I like NT (like a rash where the sun dont shine), Linux would make the SGI VisualStation an awesome tool in many UNIX-based development environments. We have one in the office im at, and despite its simply awesome graphics capabilities, its not used very much as the current SGI UNIX machines are the perferred choice of my fellow developers (and Im sure sysops would find this a blessing, as our sysop can attest to, getting our NT and IRIX networks to blend well consumes most of his time).
hasn't it pretty much been a Wintel world to this point? It seems that about 4 years ago, you walked into a computer store and there were intel based windows machines or intel based windows machines. Now adays you see a lot more iMacs and AMD-based lower priced, yet still name brand, PCs being sold in large retail computer chains.
I think his point is this: you don't pay to watch national stations like ABC and NBC, etc. So you would expect those to have many ads. But a motherboard is something you pay for so as long as A-trend intel and the rest have to sell mobos, if the customer wont buy them at reduced rates with ads, then they wont sell them. I expect if anything, it will be an option. Remember, bad technology can be thwarted: R.I.P. Divx
Just a small comment, but have you ever turned on your walkman in a plane when its way up there? you can pick up radio stations from all over the place. This is because radio bounces off sky and back down. This is why FM can travel accross large water expanses pretty simply cause it bounces sky water sky water etc.. also, the FCC imposes limits on the power of FM radio transmissions. At night, they let certian stations really crank it up. I used to get Minnesota public radio in Houghton MI some nights.
So current FM radio stations *could* be nationwide if the FCC let em.
Some, including myself, might argue on a couple of your points.
1: Vinyl vs. CDs. While CDs are unarguably more popular, they're still digital. Real music buffs can buy and enjoy what I consider to be the highest quality of analog recording, vinyl. To see what I mean, get Eagles "Hotel California" on Vinyl, CD, and Tape. Listen and then you'll hear what i mean.
2: Betamax vs. VHS Betamax did lose to VHS, but it wasn't erradicated all together. Most TV programs and commercials still use a modernized Betamax cassette and player.
I saw the bottom middle picture with the caption "The FLEX Design by InSync is a flexible unit allowing you to take the desktop from the office to the home conveniently" and all that came to mind was:

implementing in Windows and integrating it with the OS would be nice..
but the "extend"ing features bit scares me..
memory: remember back when Java was written platform independant? Remember how M$ added "features" that made you code Java for either M$ machines or everyone else
perl is nice cause its powerful and platform independant. Let's keep it this way!
Let M$ add it to their OS: but if they extend it, it will ruin it, as perl scripts will have to be written either for M$ machines or everyone else
just last week, i kid you not, we finally shut down and got rid of a slew of personal IRISes that date back to before 1978 and some SGI NC computers from back then too.. I actually used one of those 2, 5, and 8Mhz SGIs as a dumb terminal last year till it caught fire while i was out of the office one day (all the dust over the years and a hard drive on its last leg generating more heat than an overclocked PII under a magnifying glass in the Sahara finally did it in).

i wont repeat what im replying to, but i agree with aenigma...
When you look at the trail of products Star Wars and Star Trek have left behind, you quickly understand that Star Trek is the far more brainy techno-centered of the two.
Star Wars (since SW:SW, not just TPM): Toys, board games, a few books, memorabilia, kids halloween costumes..
Star Trek: A lot of the same, but the books are not fantasy based, but rather things like "The Physics of Star Trek" (which gets way into some adv nuc physics), and tons of technical manuals, specifications, explinations, etc of cruisers, battleships, arms, and technology..
Star Wars has never produced the same brainy books and magazines as Star Trek did and Star Wars did not and does not level of pocket protector, geeky type of fan base.
And about poor writing and acting.. cummon now, like Luke Skywalker was a particularly well played rool... with Star Trek you have Capt Jean Luc Picard played by a British award wining Shakespearian actor as well as Whoopi (like her or not, she is a good actress) and a slew of others.. yes shatner sucked, but Lenoard Nemoy?
The Register, which I'de call the European equiv to/. also ran the story so im guessing that poor server's been crunching bandwidth for a while. I too am an intel hater. Originally a Mac lover and just plain anti-PC, it wasn't until I really found out what a horrible company intel was. Plus, when I went shoppin this last summer to build my own machine, I was impressed with how small, fast, and inexpensive the K6-2s are/were. I've always figured that having a big ass chip that heats up a house is poor design: I could put a jet engine on a pinto and speed by a porsche, but i'de still have a piece of shit car.
Pro/E is NT based right now, but PTC owns more than one CAD/CAM company. Not too many know this.
Last year, ICEM Technologies, makers of ICEM DDN, a high end UNIX only (now we support NT too) CAD/CAM suite was bought from Control Data Corperation by Parametric Technologies. This was not primary for ICEM DDN, the CAD suite, but for it's high end surfacing application, ICEM Surf which has long been coveted by PTC because of its desire to integrate with Pro/E.
ICEM DDN, which is quite popular in Germany and in other European Engineering Firms as well as high end European Car Companies (Ferrari, for instance), is wholey owned by PTC.
So when you say that PTC is UNIX only or has been UNIX only, you're incorrect. I work for ICEM and subsequently PTC which might I add, treats its developers/programmers quite well (free pop machine, free snacks, and free beer on fridays for those of age).

a hacker is someone who hacks hardware and OSes whereas a cracker is traditionally one who cracks software copyright and helps in the distribution of such warez.
Cracker The definition of a cracker is one who attempts to break into a system using techniques that he does not fully understand. Most of the crackers are young teenage punks who are very malicious and seek to get their kicks from destroying or alternating data on a system.
Hacker
The hacker on the other hand is an individual who yearns for knowledge. The hackers are very knowledgeable individuals. They often times know several programming languages, work extensively with the inwards and outwards of UNIX, have a firm understanding of all the TCP/IP implementations and protocols. They keep abreast on all the security related issues involving computers. Breaking into a system for a hacker is a thrill, it is a challenge that they take on. The hacker takes much delight in exploring the system from the outside/inside searching vigorously for misconfigurations, bugs, and holes in the operating system that would allow them to break into a machine. Once in the system the challenge has been completed and they have succeeded in breaking in. It is against hacker ethics to alter any data aside from the logs that are needed to clean their tracks. They have no need or desire to destroy data as the malicious crackers. They are there to explore the system and learn more. The hacker has a constant yearning and thirst for knowledge that increases in intensity as their journey progresses.

This is my third year. I know many superior programmers and many poor programmers and neither has anything to do with what was taught in school.
Programming is art.
Some people have skill and others will struggle with it and never be able to write good code. Writing code is creating, and whenever creativity becomes a requirement, talent prevails over knowledge. Can an artist be certified? True, we can recognize distinctly bad art and good art, but for every task in programming there's a plethora of ways to accomplish it, some quick and dirty, some clean and slow, some rigid, some loose. We can't be "certified" because tests require right answers.
What i disgree with is the notion that college, for the insane amount we pay for it, shouldn't teach good code design. Learning theory is good, but I really think they aught to have a whole course just on good coding design. It's important and one doesn't realize its importance until they get into the field.

Then at MTU they couldn't hire any good teachers in the CS department and a huge reason is who would accept a low paying University job where with the same credentials they could get a high paying job a major corp?
