    Apperently their lawyers should take some classes on basic WAN networking. You see, the issue here is, according to ComCast:

    OR AS AN END-POINT ON A NON-COMCAST LOCAL AREA NETWORK OR WIDE AREA NETWORK, OR IN CONJUNCTION WITH A VPN (VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK) OR A VPN TUNNELING PROTOCOL;

    So basically, you *CANNOT* surf the net. The Net, after all, is basically a WAN connecting many LANs together, and hence, while using the net, you are breaking the service agreement. Personally, I'd sue them like no tommorow, becouse they are placing a stipulation in the agreement that disallows the service to be used for what you're actually paying it to do..

    This is the biggest issue that worries the hell outa me with all this, and one of the ONLY reasons I'm not gonna go do this untill it's more mature..

    If this installation fails then your iPAQ could become unusable.
    This procedure has been tested on less than a handful of units. This version, however, has a check sum code to validate that an uncorrupted bootlader is being installed, and is less likely than the previous installation process to result in an installation failure.

    If you install Linux at this time then you can not return to WinCE.
    Work is underway to enable you to save your WinCE image before installing an operating system, but at this time implementation is not complete.

    I'll wait at LEAST untill I have the failsafe to back to CE in worst case. Nothing would be worse then having to stare at a 500$ doorstop a few days after buying it..

  16. Re:New WM? on More On The Compaq iPAQ Linux Handheld · · Score: 3

    I'd say this is not the case. Many window managers actually look a whole lot like the CE interface. Look at wm, twm, olvwm, etc. Use a font size meant for the system, and it functions nearly exactly like CE. CE also has title bars, don't forget. Under CE, though, normally nearly all apps are considered full screen. Palm is the same way. All apps are full screen. Window bars are A) Not always required, and B) Can be made NOT to use the same realestate as on a desktop system.

  19. Visibile net versus actual net.. on Web More Vulnerable Than Expected? · · Score: 2

    There's actually several reasons why this is unlikely to be the case. One, the 4% of nodes that would be required to be taken out include locations such as Exodus, etc, which is *EXTREMELY* unlikely to happen. Long before the nodes where able to be taken out, the situation would be handled, and backup connections employed that *DO NOT NORMALLY SHOW UP*, becouse they are not always in existence. The second is that what may look like a 'node', could be much, much more on the inside. It's not like these 'nodes' are just one big computer systems. In many cases, there are many, parallel based systems which are load balancing between multiple communications lines..

    So 4% quickly turns into a much bigger number.

    They do virtually *EVERYTHING* that this article says is a big nono, or simply not possible. Yet they are successfull. They take some addition precautions as well, such as not allowing the app to run minimized, therby making it a *little* harder to hack while running.
