Wow, someone has actually out-eyecandied Enlightenment.;-P
I wonder if there would be any plans in the future for this to also support some of the rudimentary 3D glasses that are out there, and some sort of 'glove' interface. I would simply LOVE to be able to just 'grab' a netscape window and move it somewhere in VR space, grab another window, make it full screen, etc..etc..

Robofly will weigh about 43 milligrams -- roughly the weight of a fat housefly. Its body will be made of paper-thin stainless steel and its wings of Mylar, which looks and feels a lot like Saran Wrap.
``Instead of gears and cogs and cams, we're using pieces that are more like origami,'' Dickinson said.
Robofly will be powered by the sun, and a tiny device called a piezoelectric actuator will flap its four puny wings 180 times a second.
Are you meaning that Perl scripts have a higher overhead? If this is the case, mod_perl takes care of alot of those concerns, where the perl script itself is actually executed from memory, and not simply loaded from disk. This would be the equivilent of not only programming it all in C/C++, but building it in as an Apache module. I WOULD, however, like to see a writeup comparing the overall processing, etc, of a native C based CGI program, vurses that of an equivilent program in Perl, with AND without mod_perl..
I think it's a matter of we're being 'sensitised' to breakthoughs. Our knowledge is increasing at such a rapid rate, that yes, there will be breakthoughs ever year or so, some that completely change our outlook, at least for a year or two. They are surely not going to 'cure all things' in a given area, but surely they do lead to that eventuality.
One also has to remember that it's alot of trial and error. Who'd have guessed that eating cat hair daily decreases your risk of (name something) by 1000%?? (NOT a real example, but hey, it could, you know..)
I understand where you're coming from, but as I said, breakthoughs like this where a whole lot bigger 50 years ago.. Remember the headline:
What they did went far beyond simply collecting usage information, general performance issues, etc. It actually sent data back about things you had local that it recognized the extention for. It's see all those wav files, etc, and report 'em back. It wasn't only usage data it was sending back, that, I could understand. It was complete sets of info regarding what you had on your HD..
Why is it that all of the companies that get caught integrating this type of capability always come up with the same line when their caught.
"We're sorry we wheren't clear. We'll release a patch to disable it for those who wish their privacy respected"
This has happened to SEVERAL companies in the last few years. Microsoft, Blizzard, Real Networks, and others. When are they going to understand that you CAN'T just start grepping through peoples personal data without making it clear in the first place.
If anyone reading is developing a product that may even provide the SLIGHTEST amount of feedback to an enitity, do yourselves a favor. MAEK it VERY clear what is going on, or risk taking the wrath of your customers when they relieze that their privacy has been compromised, and you know all about 'Customer Joe's' dirty web site habits.
n I don't think you read the oroginal post I was replying to. It was a poke at RedHat merely using this as a ploy to increase Windows users usage of Linux. That's what I meant when I say what does it have to do with selling more copies of Linux. This foundation is NOT pushing Linux, it's pushing open source ideas and technologies..
What does extending Open Source have to do with selling Red Hat Linux? Again, I think people are looking to far into this then they need to. RedHat also has many people working on OS software such as Gnome via RH Labs. This has NOTHING to do with anything but RedHat giving back, to assist in furthering their end goal.
I'm wondering if anyone has more data on exactly what this group will be focused on. Is it simply a place to guide OS products? Provide hardware and funding for projects, like LI does for Linux Development Grants?
The article itself is very vague, and I think we'd all be extremely interested to get more information regarding this 'venture'..
What is funny about this type of thing is that IE5 actually INCREASES the reboot time on all machines, becouse i automagically loads all of the IE DLL's into memory. Then they proceed to do ads stating how fast IE is.. Well sure, they preinit everything at startup, and your time is moved from when you click to when you turn on the machine. Not to mention the simply swap issue under low memory conditions..
That's just oh-so-bright. So if you want to squat, do it thru an overseas company. I truely don't see where they think they're going with this. They can't 'abolish' squating on the internet, they can simply force the squaters to dummy offshore companies they setup for 50$.
Gambling on the inetrnet is also illegal. Look at how well THAT'S worked..
I wonder if this has to do with the fact that, at least in the US, people have less and less time, as women and men both pursue career based lives vs family based lives. People just aren't having 6 kids anymore, and less and less time is spent in family environments versus professional environments..
A palm isn't meant to replace a laptop, it's meant to 'SUPPLEMENT' it. Primary example, the IrDA port. I for one, would NOT want to have to open my Laptop as often as I open my Franklin Planner, and a Palm could replace it, easily. And run over a month on AAA batteries.
And it's usa is as likely to be abused as a person with a pen and a peice of paper. Staff Room Art, anyway?
This is not happening as you say. This device, while packing many more feautres then the Palm, costs approximately the same AS a lower range Palm does.
And removing things in the way you state get's you solar powered calculators that are bastard children of older Scientific computers.
Will this update also be available on the Visor's? I have been putting off buying one untill the add-on packs come out, but it look like there are a LOT of nice features in 3.3..
I was thinking more the other way around, Aka, someone files a ptent in 1998. In 1999, someone uses a simular protocol. Panent is granted in 2000. Can the original submitter of the patent sue the guy who came out with an equivilent protocol in 1999?
Was there ever a doubt that this 'kid' was making it up? You could TELL he really, REALLY wasn't the real thing.. I just wrote it off as me steroetyping the kid, but apperently my first guess was right..
As was predicted, Katz did indeed psot an article about it..;-P
I think it'd be interesting to have a 'Slashdot Proofs' section, where documents could be uploaded for all the world to tear apart. This would be very, VERy interesting... (Spec if Katz prepublished some of his papers, for all the world to tear to shreds)
I'm actually considering Debian for this exact reason. Can you set it up to only pull updates you want, like autorpm --interactive mode? Basically, autorpm will pull a list of RPM's that can be updated, and sends an email. You then run it interactively, and tell it to try install, update, or remove the package from beuing checked..

I was speaking purely in the context of compiled C code vs mod_perl, which is what get's rid of the parsing and bytecompiling..

What does the LSB have to do with this group? They are to promote Open Source to the public. The LSB is for a Standardized Linux platform..

How does RedHat ship with a non standard Kernel?
Simply becouse they presetup the source files to make everything as modules?
The RedHat kernel is NOT heavily patched, nor has it ever been..

Hrm.. Perhaps a reason NOT to buy one..
I wonder if this is why they released 3.3 so soon after Visor came out?

Are protocol specifications also patentable? Aka, can someone patent the idea of using TCP/IP to transfer data in a tag based language, such as XML?
Or even more broad, patent something like XML-RPC, etc?
ROTFL..

I wonder if there will be a Visor version of this. You KNOW Palm will have one, but they are simply to expensive for what they can do.
I'm also guessing that this 'feature' will drive up the memory consumption of a 'colorized' Palm OS. PalmOS Themes, here we come..
