  1. I hope this doesn't mean bad news for eMusic on Apple Wooing Smaller Labels · · Score: 3, Insightful

If iTunes sales for small labels are going too well, they might abandon eMusic, which would be a shame, since I like it better to d/l as many mp3s as I like for $10/month than paying $.99 per DRM-protected track. (Yes, Apple's DRM is pretty much acceptable, but no DRM is even better, and if you're downloading a substantial number of tracks each month, $10/month is better than $.99 per track.)

TVs are still the most important medium to distribute information through (with the net gaining ground fast), and I, for one, would like to decide for myself what to do with the information I recorded from TV; I don't want some companies making these decisions for me.

The thing in question isn't as much the amount of evidence needed but rather what the claim would do to your view of the world should it turn out true.

In case of the mouse, it probably wouldn' matter much, unless you'd set your heart on building a mice-proof house. There've been mice in other houses, there are many established ways in which a mouse can enter a house, so the discovery wouldn't tell you anything fundamentally new. So you might be ready to accept that claim without much evidence.

In case of the elephant, it'd be very different: There aren't many stories of elephants in bedrooms, and there aren't any obvious ways for an elephant to get there. In fact, conventional wisdom would place this situation somewhewre close to impossible. Thus the existence of an elephant in your bedroom would clash with much of your experience and view of the world, therefore you'd probably have a harder time believing it without substantial proof.

Looks like this can't be said often enough: If those people had political motivations, they would voice them, as well.

Even terrorists who commit far more serious offenses always offer a statement of their intentions, no matter how twisted those might be.

It's like somebody stealing a car and crashing it. If that person then steps up and says this action was in protest against such and such, then it's still a crime and punishable, but it can also be considered to be an act of protest.
However, if that person just crashes the car and runs, we most likely have a "crash kiddie" who's just doing this for the kicks of it.

So unless someone speaks up and verifies that they're behind this deal, I would rule protest out.

Not that I would like the options that leaves us with. :(
