  1. Perhaps.. on Duke's All Out of Gum · · Score: 3

"I've been waiting 8 years for Duke Forever and I all got was this lousy slogan"

  2. It's Alive on Software Carpentry Project's First-Round Winners · · Score: 1

How amusing. Coming off John Taschek's slagging on Linux comes this story that development of Open Source (sorry, "Free Software") is alive and vibrant.

ZDNet : give it up, others have.

  3. Re:Mozilla Recognition on Mozilla Milestone 15 · · Score: 1

Gday gwernol Oh yes - i've talked to many of my peers who aren't in any way shape or form knowledgable in OSS etc Their consensus is that it's a nice improvement over the current 4.7x releases from Netscape - these people do not analyse CSS standards, HTML compliance etc etc - what they see is a decent browser that is as usable as IE.
Specifically, they like the new clean interface. Call them shallow but these are average computer users that /. readers love quoting on the behalf of.
Finally, you and I know personal opinions differ. I'm not asking that you like it - just recognition that hard work has gone into it. People just seem to believe coding browsers and especially rendering engines are a like a walk in the park...

  4. Mozilla Recognition on Mozilla Milestone 15 · · Score: 1

It's about time people recognised what a great job the Mozilla developers have done with the Mx releases. From an end user perspective, it's good because it works. Enough bickering already, that it isn't the size of Opera, or doesn't have cleaner widgets like IE etc etc I read the MozillaZine posts last time a Mozilla story was posted on /. and the comments were uncomplimentary to say the least - and justifiably so. Just be grateful such a project is being actively developed for our benefit. Just my 0.02 Aust cents (which equals about 0.0000001 US cents)

  5. Looking foward to it on Heavy Gear II for Linux Goes Gold · · Score: 1

Everyone who's ever had a feel for the Battletech universe which MechWarrior was based on knows Mech 1 was the greatest while 2 and 3 were so so. It's no coincidence the games went stale when Microsoft bought out FASA, the company that developed Battletech in the first place.
Now Heavy Gear is pretty much trumps in the mech gaming world (subjectively speaking of course) and HG2 for Win32 was awesome. Can't wait for the Linux version and finally let these old Gear cards and playing boards slip quietly away.

  6. Free air time on DeCSS To Be Broadcast Over Oz TV · · Score: 1

To have one's commerical put on for nicks on Australian commercial TV means it has a "community service announcement" banner at the bottom. Obviously then, broadcasting the DeCSS source is a "community service" for which every Australian watching should be grateful for :)

  7. Just browsing the specs on Can Indrema Beat Microsoft To the Punch? · · Score: 1

...and an interesting feature pops up - "MP3/VOB Storage and Playback System". Finally an aboveground system to play "backup" copies of DVD's from their VOB streams. Just a query though how high res graphics from games like UT/Q3 will look on a standard TV (even with an S-Video in/out)

  8. Does Microsoft Want To Do Linux? on Microsoft On Linux: Forecast Or Fantasy? · · Score: 1

It's well known that Office is the main cash cow for Microsoft besides the OEM Windows installs. For them to port Office over to Linux (amongst other things) would mean they'd somehow benefit from it - but what are the benefits? More installed seats? Another solution to "compete" with (the "free") StarOffice, ApplixWare etc? IMHO the only benefit is perfect document conversion from Windows to Linux...

  9. Sounds Promising on Anarchy Online · · Score: 1

Only a few questions remain - will there be an exorbitant playing fee ala UO and the Anarchy servers be up to it - high pings and heavy lagged spoiled UO in non US countries
