  1. Re:The Final Frontier on Hayabusa Returns Particles From Asteroid · · Score: 1

Well, who knows, maybe in the near future some companies will invest in searching for extraterrestrial sources of rare-earth and heavy minerals. If they can find some solid leads on some of these asteroids, it could very well be the start of a 21st century land-grab (more specifically mineral grab) and perhaps the first step in colonization beyond Earth.

Satellite was actually something we considered, but the prices were prohibitively expensive. Generally $100-$125 a month for a basic 1-2MB line. Then there was the cost of parts and labor to get it going. Add on unreliability during bad weather and you end up with a vastly overpriced method that is laggy even on clear days. Overall, just not a good deal for the dollar.

  3. Seems Like New Age Rural Telephone Initiative on New US Broadband Projects Get $795 Million In Funding · · Score: 2, Interesting

I grew up on a farm in a rural community. Up until last year, my family only had access to 56k (at best) dial up service, now they have a 1MB cable service. I really would love to see all citizens in the US be able to access high speed internet but I understand how high those costs are. Personally, I'd like to see more work done in rural areas utilizing wireless broadband. Similar to the speed of the rise of cell phones in modern society. High speed internet isn't the luxury it once was. In many ways, it has become a lifeblood for a new US and a new global economy. The only problem I have is how are they going to track this money to make sure it doesn't go to line the pockets of telecos.

I agree, the "ribbon" was one of the biggest reasons that I essentially abandoned MS Office to go to OpenOffice.org. This was also the big selling point to convince friends to use OO.o as well. Seriously, why are they shooting themselves in the foot? But in all fairness, if it comes with an opt-in option and the "ribbon" is not the default, I could see this as being ok.

  9. About the Grand Canyon.. on Arizona Considers Selling Capitol Buildings · · Score: 1

Since the Grand Canyon (the proper part near the middle) is a federal park and thus federal land (with the exception of the reservations in the area), I doubt the state would be able to sell any. Although they might be able to fetch a decent price on some of the land outside of the park. If anything, their smaller state parks in the center of the state might be worth looking into. But in all seriousness, it seems as if they are trying to use this as an excuse to move out of the old building. From what I've read about the building, it is costing Arizona hundreds of thousands of dollars just to pay for the repairs and retrofits to the old building.
